So made cag friendly it'd look like this:
Anyone care to make me a new avatar? My old one (sans Santa Hat) is on my computer at home and I won't be back there for like 2 months, so any help would be appreciated.

Preferably of Mister Karate, but any cool fighting game character would do.
I never delete anything.

You don't suck, I've just been playing Aoi nonstop for the last month or so. If I brought in one of my B squad, it would be much closer.

Just keep practicing. You'll get better. And mix up your attacks. In VF, predictable = death, at least against a good player.

Yea I just got it for XMAS have played about 150 quest matches and about 20 online (10 with you) so I know I have along ways to go.

My goal is to get all 1000 points :)

I've played Virtua Fighter since the first one hit arcades. I remember playing VF one day at a mall when some dude in a suit and tie came up and challenged me. He spent $10 trying to beat me. He laughed, shook my hand, then left. I'll never forget that.

Good luck on that 1000 points. I know I won't get that far.
Thoughts on the Happ Perfect 360 stick? Wouldnt it be a pain to hit directions if you can also hit a shitload of other directions?
I've often wondered the same thing, about sticks that hype their optical 360 degree input thingies. For a games that just work off of 8 directional inputs, wouldn't that just make everything less precise?

The best joystick I've owned has been the X-Arcade dual stick, although it's really the only arcade-style stick I've invested in. Before I had these two PS1 sticks that I got from EB games... these small metallic-looking things, relatively heavy for their size. Buttons didn't resemble real arcade buttons at all, and the stick (ball-style) was in a square-shaped hole (not sure of the proper terminology here). Then I had these two Dreamcast sticks that were cheap plastic nightmares.

Anyway, I suppose it could be said that the X-Arcade is a nice entry-level stick. The price isn't that great if you're only gonna use it on one system, but since I have the adapters for PC, DC, PS2, and XBOX, it's kinda like condensing eight controllers into one (especially nice if space is at a premium). Also, the fact that it's a DUAL stick kinda emphasizes the "casual" environment that it excels in, ya know? It's not even practical to haul that thing to a tournament, but it's perfect for chilling with a buddy and messing around on MAME.

I keep wondering if I should invest in a separate stick for the 360. The annoying thing is that I'm gonna wanna play a lot of UMK3 and Street Fighter, and the X-Arcade is the only stick I've seen where the button layout accomodates both of those games nicely...

IMO the X-Arcade stick is a steaming pile of crap. I tried one of those out once and it was downright terrible.

For the price that X-Arcade is charging for that dual (or even the solo) cade' stick ($129.XX) you could invest in a better stick (HRAP2 for instance)

The X-Arcade would be a good entry level stick if it was like 1/4 of the price... but yeah, there's absolutely no reason to ever consider it given what they're actually charging.

So how many of us real fighting game fans dont consider smash brothers a " real" fighting game.

I know I dont.

Do you HRAP folks usually stick with PS2? As I understand, a lot of people go for a PS2 HRAP stick, then use PS2 adapters if they wanna play on another system, since those adapters are the most widely available. I'm ballin' on a budget so I have no plans of getting a new stick any time soon, but I'm just wondering.

Basically I wanna minimize the amount of sticks I need. I ain't MarkMan :p

That's what I do. I wish I could find a cheap PS2 to 360 adapter, but that's not happening.

Eh, I take Smash about as seriously as Mortal Kombat. They are fun, but loaded with cheap shots.

Hank you have just earned my respect.

To me, and through my experiences, Smash Bros. Melee is definitely a legit fighting game.

There are tons of other games touted as 'fighting games' that don't even match the competitve mechanics of SSBM...
Do you HRAP folks usually stick with PS2?

I guess it all depends on what systems you care to have sticks for and what percentage of fighting games you have on each system.

For me about 80-85% of my fighting game collection is on PS2, so I invested in a factory/stock PS2 stick and a custom PS2 stick. The rest of my collection is either on PS3 (T5DR/VF5), Sega Saturn (JAP) or Dreamcast. As you said the adapters for those systems are easily available and very affordable.

I have the Agetec "Green Goblin" stick for Dreamcast too. Then again I couldn't pass up on a local deal for the stick ($20) since I've wanted it for so long.

Also I should throw in that the HRAP2 is pretty easy to mod. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the button in the HRAP models all quick disconnects?

Currently I'm saving some money, so that my custom stick builder can make me a new box. The current box I have that he built is beat to shit and it doesn't open through the bottom. Once I get the funds I'll be able to get a new box (that opens through the bottom) that is smaller, better built, with the same artwork and my original stick/buttons.
So how many of us real fighting game fans dont consider smash brothers a " real" fighting game.

I didn't at first. After watching a couple of my friends (who are really good at the game) play I can see why it's being played in tournaments and why EVO ran it last year. As MarkMan mentioned there are a lot of mechanics that make it a legit fighting game. At first glance it does look like a mash happy game, but reading strats and watching good players play, you see things differently.

The past 2 years have been my highest exposure to good Smash players, so it definitely has me excited to pick up Brawl in 2 months.

I consider smash a fighter in terms of competitve level only... other than that it's a random beat-em-up platfromer. if it had less platforming, I'd be happier with it. It's like Guitar Hero/Rock Band to me. Fun game but bores the fuck outa me.

From what I understand about Smash Bros competitive play is it's really limited. They use only certian levels, characters, and no items. I understand it's to make it more balanced, but that's the whole fun about SSBM, the randomness and mayhem of it all. You take that out and you might as well just play a real fighter like Street Fighter, VF, or Tekken.

I've heard that SBM question a lot of times, and I can never give a good convincing answer. The competitive level is quite insane, but there are so many restrictions put in place in terms of levels and items, I just don't know.

here's hoping the Wii release releaves alot of the limitations. with that happening I can see all working great.

A friend of mine was just telling me that today. He was all for competitive Smash but as you mentioned didn't understand all the fun being stripped out of it.

I think he mentioned to me at one time Peach was banned because people said her "turnip" move was an item. That because items were turned off, it was unfair that she still had access to one. He also hopes that wave-dashing (or the glitch that is called wave-dashing) is fixed for Brawl.

This is the first Smash game that I am going to try to get decent at. Excitement.

Smash has the flexibility to appeal to a much broader range of people, and the sales indicate exactly that.

You've got options to play it in a lot of different ways, including in a very focused 1v1 competition style. The multiple ways to play dont invalidate each other. Furthermore, the mechanics make it different from every other fighting game, so there isnt a replacement for it.

We get into this like one in every 4 or so threads it seems. Smash Bros is without a doubt a fighter, and one of the finer competitive (& still relevant) fighters out there, to be honest. Top 10 competitive fighters right now fo' sho.

is that too much in addition to foleys stuff?

That's a lot of categories. I'm diggin' it.

I love it when fools disconnect during a VF5 match. Some dude was 2nd dan using Sarah, something like 120 - 20, and I demolished him. He quit before the match ended. I've earned my losses. Who cares about having a great record when you aren't good to begin with?
I vote for a catagory as well regarding JEKKI comments.
I bet it will involve his favorite boy toy, Jin Kazama.
