Final Fantasy IV Compilation Set for PSP
Square Enix combines FFIV with FFIV The After on one UMD.

PlayStation Portable is getting a version of Final Fantasy IV. But there's a bit more to the new version than just a port of the 1991 Super Famicom/SNES classic.

The latest issue of V Jump has a first look at Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection. This PSP title combines Final Fantasy IV with Final Fantasy IV The After Years. The latter is an episodic sequel to FFIV that was released on Wii Ware last year after originally appearing on cell phones.

For the PSP, Square Enix is redoing the visuals and adding a new scenario that connects FFIV and The After Years. There could be some other new elements as well, but we'll have to wait for a followup report.

Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection is due for PSP release in Spring 2011.

EDIT: Here's the scan:

How bad was the After Years supposed to be? I heard there were random battles every couple steps. I think I'd live if I never played it.

A graphically touched-up FF4 could be hot, though. Even those few tiny screens look gorgeous.

I'll no doubt buy this and it will be the 7th different version of this game that I own, counting the Japanese versions (SNES, PS1, GBA, DS, GBA (JP), Super Famicom)

Damn does Square-Enix love releasing this game. I wish they'd give FFVI some of the same love.

I'll buy this and hate Square-Enix every minute until I get home and play it. After Years wasn't that bad, it was just hard. The difficulty spiked randomly and you'd get butchered.

I'd buy this if it came out in North America. I played FFIV on the GBA a long time ago, but never picked up the DS version, and don't have a Wii for the After Years. I look forward to an updated FFIV with the After Years.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a US release. If you have a DS, pick up that version finally. I was hesitant due to the graphics overhaul, but ended up being very pleased. There are a few additions to that version that are unavailable in others as well.

What you don't think Squeenix wants free printed money? This game is going to come over here, there is no doubt about that.
I've played the After Years I can say it's nothing special.
I bought Edges story for an Add on and I'm already at the end after 2 days.
So you didn't play all the After Years? Just the first chapter and Edges?

I probably won't get this. I bought FF Origins (1&2), FF Anthology (4&5) and FF6 when they were released for PS1 quite a few years back! But I couldn't play them...I found them TOO slow. Can't get past the graphics I'm afraid :( If I can't play it on PS1 then it's not going to make me want to play it on PSP. The next FF game I'll be playing on PSP will be Agito XIII!

It's one of my favorite games of all time (I've beaten it 23 times across all the versions), but I'll be dammed if I'll re-buy it a 5th time.

Square is strawberry milking their franchises worse than SNK.

It's funny how two of the most popular games in the series (VI and VII) are the ones that they never bother re-making.

Then again, I don't know if I want SE touching FFVI in any way. I'd love a CT-esque DS port (i.e., mostly untouched, with minor additions) though so I could play it on the go.

Anyway, I loved FFIV on the DS but am not gonna get this. I mean, I like the graphical update but it seems really pointless to buy the game again as it's only been a few years since the DS release.

It makes sense. FFVI still looks great as a sprite game and I don't think a little PSP refresher would be a huge upgrade. They already did a great GBA port with improved translations and I think that's about as far as it will go.

And a remake of FFVII is just a massive undertaking and a total waste of resources -- both creatively and in terms of money and time. I'd rather have a new game, and Square knows another FF will pull in just as much money as an FFVII remake would.
I'm down. I hated the DS version of IV. It was soulless without some semblance of the original sprites.
This. The ending just wasn't the same *cries because I never had a brother...*
So you didn't play all the After Years? Just the first chapter and Edges?
Well No.
Because it's at least a 45$ investment in Wii Points just to get everything I might end up buying some more stories but probably not all of them.

Glad to see this since the DS version is hideous and the GBA one is apparently broken. Won't buy it at full price but hopefully it drops at some point.

Maybe I'll get this when it's like 10 dollars, out of curiosity for The After Years. Hopefully I don't have to replay IV for the billionth time just to unlock The After Years or something.

I'm in the same boat. I mean, FFIV was one of the best FFs and all but I'm getting pretty sick of SE's constant remakes... they need to stop remaking old games and instead, go back and play them. Maybe then they'll figure out what made those games so great and how to apply those things to newer games. That way, maybe they'll stop releasing shit like FFIVX and The Four Heroes of Light.

Why is Square Enix rushing all of these PSP games out the door? (3 within 1 month of each other.) I get the whole sales before end of fiscal year thing but there's no way people interested are going to get all 3 games. Is it just so they can abandon PSP development for NGP?

Anyone know if this will be sold on the PS store? I don't want to buy a PSP for this. I rather buy it when the next psp comes out and play it on that. This is my all time favorite game. I have it on the DS but couldn't stand the graphics. I'm right now going thru the GBA version

So the after years, is it just the same kind of game except an additional story? The CG cut-scenes looked pretty good.

I went ahead and bought a psp 3000 for this game from Amazon. They can keep remaking it and I'll keep buying it. I hope FFVI comes out one day. I really like the graphics of this version

I think I'll wait for this to drop to $15. It's been too soon since the DS remake.

Hell, I DL'd the After Years on Wii and still haven't played it.

I saw this on Amazon's page today:

Bonus Features That Fans Demand: Original SNES soundtrack, an all-new intro movie and cinematic CGI sequences from previous release, and a monster encyclopedia that covers details of over 300 enemies are all included within the game

Everything else is meh, but the fact that they're including the original SNES soundtrack is a good step in the right direction IMO.

Looks like I might have to pick this up after all. I have a feeling there is going to be a limited edition/bonus/pre-order incentive type thing with this.

This is a must buy for me. Only saw it a couple of days ago. The PSP has a CRAZY number of great games this year. It feels like everything I'm buying lately is on PSP.

I love that this (and Y's Book 1 and 2!) are much better remakes than those awful fugly 3D ones on the DS (ditto for Y's on the DS, which not only looks fugly, but changed the controls).

There is just not on our side of the pond apperently. It seems like it's been a while since SE has shown USA some CE love overall.

Bump, since it's coming out next week. From the sound of things, this version will be the definitive one, as the FFIV extras are based on the extras from the GBA version (Party switching, Trials, etc.). So you get FFIV, Interlude and The After Years. The OP of the NeoGAF thread outlines the features pretty well:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27173898&postcount=1

Features
-The definitive version of one of gaming's greatest sagas.
-An all-new FINAL FANTASY IV Interlude game between FINAL FANTASY IV and The After Years that binds the two narratives together.
-High definition graphical updates for both FINAL FANTASY IV and The After Years.
-Play the game in the original Japanese, an updated English translation or French.
-Choose between the original soundtrack or a rearranged version of the timeless compositions of Nobuo Uematsu.
-View an exclusive collection of concept and design art by the famed artist Yoshitaka Amano.
-Brand new CGI movie intros for both FINAL FANTASY IV and The After Years.
-Players can choose any of the three storylines to play as soon as they unwrap the PSP game.
-Enjoy the complete, uncensored FINAL FANTASY IV experience for the first time in North America - no altered graphics, scenarios, or dialogue.

...

-Notes-
-The game is essentially a enhanced port of the EU version of FFIV Advance.
-Included are the dungeon at Mt. Ordeals, and the Lunar Trials in the post-game from FFIV Advance, as well as party swapping.
-The PSP version has all the EU Advance fixes not present in the NA version of FFIV Advance, for example, harps, whips, boomerangs, and bows all do full damage from the back row.
-This also means that the inventory item limit is in place (unlike the DS version). Get to the Fat Chocobo!
-Extra event scenes made for the Nintendo DS remake are not included in the game, nor does this game have the augment system.

The augment system was a poor excuse to ramp up the difficulty, so I'm glad that that is not included. Also happy to have the full party available at the end.

Nice, I can't wait. Sounds like they started off with the idea of doing the same awesome remakes they did of Final Fantasy 1 and 2, but then took it even further with extra content.

I'm half glad they didn't do that for Final Fantasy 3, just because I already played through the DS one, and would be disappointed if they did a much better remake after I'd experienced it! (Although I'd probably still buy it )

Guess it's personal preference, but they look fantastic to me. Similar style to what they did with the Final Fantasy 1 and 2 remakes, where they tried to keep everything the same style as the originals, just upgraded a gazillion times. Ditto for the music.
I dunno, the sprites look like shit to me. Am I the only one who doesn't like the look?
I feel the same way. I wish it had the ds graphics and it would be the definitive version. It's kinda ugly looking at those boring sprites over and over. I hear the random battles are frequent.

Like someone posted on NeoGAF, they look too "clean," too sterile. They should have just used the GBA sprites, which were IIRC upgraded, but didn't look like an iphone game.
