Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns | Discussion Thread

Each XIII game has clearly had a much tighter budget than the last. Just looking at the textures and level geometry in Lightning Returns vs. Final Fantasy XIII, it's like night and day.

I can see what you mean about the sidequests, but personally they don't strike me as too different from the sidequests in basically any RPG ever. Everything ultimately boils down to "Crawl through this dungeon" or "Kill 10 of X monster" or "Bring item Y to character Z."
It's because it's non-stop. There's no downtime between sidequests and they eclipse any portion of main quests because those go by super fast. In fact, one might say the main quest is just an extension of the sidequesting because some of them are just one big collection quest. The sad fact is that out of all this, the only interesting bit is Lumina since she's a bit of a mischievous devil and none of the original cast are worth a shit even as support roles. To top it off, none of the battles have been engaging or even hard. I've one-shot every boss fight now using the same schema setup since like hour two of the game.

They're basic fetch missions at best, and as a large part of the game's premise they're incredibly lame. "To save peoples' souls as the savior of god" amounts to herding sheep and and collecting claws. It's childish. Reminds me of Kingdoms of Amalaur in how little I care about the NPC quest dialogue, but that game at least had the decency to mark my map with objectives.

I agree that Lumina is really the only point of interest the story has going for it.

The thing about the quests that pisses me off the most is that you can only complete some of them during certain times of the day.

Nice.

I just realized how OP the Yuna garb from Amazon's preorder bonus is. It has a built-in max-level Elementa that just destroys fools.

Finished Snow's quest last night, which was awesome.

^ Notice how they're trying to redeem the game by copying elements from previous games, like the opera event in VI?  Yeah, doesn't quite work lol.  Such a plot device.

Hmm, it didn't occur to me at the time, but now that I think on it, you're right. I wonder if Ali Hillis can sing.

i need help with the game. Im trying to aim for platinum but i have a question can i like do all the side mission and canvas of prayers at the final day? Or is there a certain day you can only do each side mission and canvas of prayers? Please let me know.

Outerworld Challenge #1 is passed, you can unlock the Helter Skelter garb by talking to an "@LRFF13" NPC.

#2 is for 250,000 shares and will unlock the Duelist garb.
Yay for more Death Herald gift spam. :wall: Anyway, I see they are giving everyone the day 1 Hard garbs.

You can do all the side missions and canvas of prayers after the main quests are finished, but it has to be done before the final day. Once the final day arrives (13/14th day depending if you get the extra day), your warped to the last area. :???:

None of the side quests or prayers have a limit to be started on certain days. IIRC, only two side quests can only be done during a specific chapter (Fireworks in a Bottle and Fireworks for a Steal in 2-2).

actually the quest free will has a time limit. I didn't know this and failed, thus locking myself out of the dark knight garb.

A few quests do have time limits once you start them. However, none are locked out completely because they weren't started by "X" Day.

Have you guys gotten both the tonberry and cactuar adornments from talking to official @LRFF13 NPCs? Supposedly you can get both, but I've only seen a handful of official NPCs and only received the tonberry adornment from talking to them.

This is a weird one. I don't know if I'm not showing up on time or what, but it keeps telling me that they'll see me tomorrow at noon after I see them the next noon after I activate the quest.

I have both, but this was back they issued the first Outerworld challenge.

Guess I've just been unlucky with getting official NPC spawns. I did manage to get the Helter Skelter reward as soon as it was available.

:/ i been doing this for a while. Do anyone know the best place to kill 30-75 niblets to spawn the pink one? i need it for a quest :/

Aeronite down! :D
Congrats! :D/

They are the basic enemy of the game so most commonly found in Luxerion. They are also in Yuusaan and Wildlands.

Anyway, finished the game again. Didn't need to though, seeing as I got the plat a few hours into hard. My only complaint was RNG and synthesizing stuff to get those rare auto-abilities. Those HP/Mag/Str+ stats were too prevalent. :wall:

So I've completed Wildlands, Luxerion, and Yusaan main quests and a ton of sidequests.  On the last step of the desert but I'm taking my time just finishing off some stuff first.  I'm still using the exact same schema setup from hour two of the game lol.  Did farm behemoth, oh wait reaver. . .into extinction and got his sword of own, though.  Using it now and it just breaks the game further heh.  They seriously didn't balance this game well if everything is going to be this easy and I kinda wish I had just gone straight to hard mode, but oh well.  Need to hurry up and plat this before Dark Souls II. . .

You know Jodou if you just sleep till the last few days everything becomes much harder. granted you might not beat the game but it does offer a bigger challenge.

My go-to setup has been Midnight Mauve, Spira's Summoner, and Soldier of Peace. Been using those for pretty much every fight since I got them, except for Aeronite where I subbed in Splendid Admiral and Miqo'te Dress for the first two.

Speaking of garbs, there's new DLC today-- Moogle Lover, Divine Wear, and Ultimate Savior. $4 each or the collection for $10.

Jesus, I need to just stop reading news articles about Final Fantasy on any websites other than like Nova Crystallis or Square Portal. The sheer amount of bile and rage that people feel the need to spew on the series is unsettling. I get that people don't like the Lightning Saga, but fuck. Get over it and try feeling something positive about a game you DO like.

My first playthrough was mostly Shadow trooper, Deja Vu, and Dense Macabre to be different. For the second playthrough: Guardian Corps, Knight of Etro, and Equilibrium+ was the only way to go for me to end the series. :D

Yeah I'm kind of looking forward to second PT where I can choose garbs based just on looks because I'll be destroying everything anyway.

So am I the only one who absolutely loves this guy? He's my hero.

That sounded so familiar every time I passed by that sector, took me a while to catch what it was from. XIII-2 had some great tracks.

I really love the opening drums on this one:

This sucks, started new job and routine us get up, go to work, come back home, food and sleep. My videogaming has been reduced to weekends.

Damn, had planned to complete it by now.

I've been rocking the Soldier garb as my DPS, Passion Rogue for debuffing, and I'll flip-flop between Ignition and Electronica (probably not the right name) depending on whether I need fire or lightning to stagger quickly. With the behemoth sword, I'm at almost 2k STR with heavy slash 1-shotting anything that's staggered and it's only level 2 rofl. Bosses just drop dead after the first or second stagger, such a joke. I do want to start swapping gear out but I can't see a need to use miqo'te until I actually need to block attacks. I might swap in a dragoon spec once I get the right gear together instead of magic to stagger though. Been itching to use this lance I got and pendant locket.

I'm afraid inefficiency is against my programming, Dave. . .

I was experimenting a little last night with different garbs in the default/magic/stagger role... Not sure about it. Played around a bit with Purple Lightning, L'automne, Hidden Justice, Witching Hour, and my standby Midnight Mauve. Results were inconclusive. But at this point I'm pretty much just killing time, mopping up a handful of leftover canvas prayers, and grinding out various Last Ones. Still only on Day 9.

In my 'Commando' role I've switched Cloud back in for Soldier of Peace, purely because I'm tired of how dumb Soldier of Peace looks.

Also checked out the new DLC garbs, nothing's especially impressive except for one of the shields which has +30 ATB recovery, topping Il Nome della Rosa's +25 which was the best I had before.

Way too much. I have read that the Cosmocrator one is the "expert" level garb that reduces your hp by 95-99% in exchange for damage. Now that one I would be interested in. :)

Same thing happened to me when I passed the bard in Ruffian playing Eternal Wind.

Dawn of day 11, all canvas of prayers quests completed, all sidequests completed except for Last Ones Standing. Think I'll just fast-forward to day 13 now. :)

Ive been having problems taking snapshots recenttly. Ive done it, settings all look right, but its always grayed out anytime I try to do it. Anyone have similar issues?

Not sure if this is what you mean, but the "Take snapshot" option is only enabled if you're not in a battle, cutscene, or conversation. It just lets you change the camera position and zoom in and out.

If you are in battle/cutscene/conversation, you can still upload a shot, you just can't use "Take snapshot" to adjust anything first. What you see is what you get. You hit "X" (on 360, would be Square on PS3 I guess) to upload it.

The camera can be moved around a little bit with the right stick during cutscenes though!

So many people on GameFAQs fishing to trade Art of War or Cloud DLC codes for an Aerith code. Yeah right, someone's going to trade you a code that came with their $90 CE for one that you can get with a $20 strategy guide.  :dunce:

Can't really send anything directly. Only options are to farm 100 soul seeds, find someone's message that has it show up in your game, or summon a message from Outerworld app. Costs 320K to buy it.

I beat it during my second playthrough. Just sort of ignored the clock and told myself the main objectives would always be there. Was much more enjoyable that way.

Even as the resident XIII fan here though, I'm pretty disappointed. I knew XIII-2 was a sign of even more silliness to come, but damn did they really butcher the universe and characters. And I'm not at all a completionist kind of gamer, so that didn't help either.

Still, fun little system. I guess it's fortunate we got one more taste of FFXIII than nothing at all. I think?

I don't necessarily disagree, but LR's storytelling was still a step up from XIII-2's ("Paradox paradox paradox future paradox future... paradox!").

XIII-2 was at least coherent. It was just a post-Cocoon timeline that took you everywhere, not some weird brink of the world where only 4 locations exist. Having 2 new protagonists also kept it from falling in the trap that LR has. Serah and Noel didn't depend on the finished development of the original cast. Familiar faces hardly made appearances. It was all Serah/Noel/Caius/Yeuhl, who may have failed to write a compelling story, but at least made a pretty show of it.

The absolute worst part of XIII-2's storytelling was Lightning's little monologues, which were rare enough to roll your eyes over and move on with things. LR is practically built around them. They just cranked the melodrama on her character to max in XIII-2, and in LR they do it to everyone else in turn. We see Snow, Fang, Vanille, Hope, Sazh, etc... and they're all just ridiculously portrayed. It's nauseating stuff.

So I do prefer XIII-2's silly psuedoscience plot to this one. LR brings everything full circle and reunites the original cast, but it does some damn desperate legwork to get there.

After finding out about the clock, I knew I wouldn't play the game.  After reading about it here my belief was cemented.  As I played through both 13 and 13-2, I went and watched the end cut scenes to see how the story concludes without playing the game I had no interest in.

Wow....I mean I wasn't a huge fan of 13 but it was alright and at least the ending was interesting.  The ending to 13-3 looked like Dragon Ball Z.  The amount of cheesy dialogue made it almost unwatchable but I forced myself to watch it anyway.  I could practically hear the eye of the voice actors rolling as they read the lines.  Then the surprise twist at the end...uh...okay.  I guess this really THE final fantasy.

Tips to beat aeronite first playthrough? Can't seem to stagger the damn thing, game's been a cakewalk until this.

Staggering:

Use the magic thundara or aerora and have at least one of them on all three schematas. Reason is thunder hits instantly and aero hits multiple times. Switching to a garb with Chaos Revenge weapon is a must once you see Aeronite with a red stagger wave. That will push it into stagger with one spell.

Additional stuff that will help: Imperil, deprotect, element potion, bravery, and faith.
