Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns | Discussion Thread

Just started this last night after completing about half of XIII and XIII-2 and having a pretty good amount of fun with them.

I'm trying to line up my gaming time so I was curious about the length of a single playthrough? I know about the clock thing and multiple playthroughs to do all the missions but about how long would just a single time through take?

I finished my first playthrough right at 55 hours. But that was with doing pretty much every possible sidequest and not rushing at all. You could probably do it much faster if you wanted.

As for the in-game clock, I had to fast-forward through two full days at the end because I had run out of things to do.

Thanks, Ryu. I'm not sure I could stick with it that long at this point but maybe I could shave a lot of that off, like you said. It's a rental so I don't mind picking it up again later. I'm enjoying the first few hours.

Hopefully it won't get like XIII-2 where I have no idea where to go and I'm stuck between a crazy weather puzzle or a huge plant monster that I can't figure out the right combination of attacks to stagger. The combat seems a bit smoother in this one.

I'll see how far I get before it gets a bit tiresome.

I clocked it, even got the platinum. It's pretty awesome! My first play through took me a lot longer than a lot of others though, I spent over 80 Hours on my first play through but I completed all side missions, All Canvas of Prayers & extinct all but two monsters by the end.

Aeronite is a motherfucker. Killed 'em good though. Day 7 with the main missions and 64 side quests done. Time to start extincting the rest of the beastiary. 5 down, 25 to go.

I'm at like 13 of 30 accessory upgrades for the last achievement. You can really blitz through a second playthrough with a built-up Lightning. I'm about to finish the Dead Dunes main quest and it's 8:00 am on day 2.

I think that trophy is going to give me the most trouble. I have over 30 accessories, but can't seem to remember how or where I got them. I've already decided to hold off on the elixir until my next playthrough on hard.

I should've planned out my campaigns better to give me more time to do whatever, but yeah, Lighting is pretty much a tank on NG+ for the most part.

Each accessory can be upgraded twice, so it's possible (and probably much faster) to play through the game until you've done 15, then reset time again, start over, and upgrade those same 15 again. I feel like just playing through the game until I have 30 though. I counted 47 accessories that I picked up in the first playthrough so it shouldn't be that rough to grab at least 30 again.

For the Elixir, easiest way to do it is browse screenshots in the Facebook app until you find one with an Elixir attached, and just summon them to your game and buy it. You do need to have 360,000 gil for it though.

I thought the elixir was the most expensive thing on there for awhile. Then I sent my last screenshot with a Double Deity attached and saw the 999K price tag for it.  :whistle2:

I have the gil, but I'll probably save-scum the elixir if it crosses my path. I'm just not anticipating seeing it in my travels. At least not yet.

Wow, I think I clocked in under 30 hours on 13-2, so this is good to hear.

Anyone pick up the Collector's Edition? Do you think it's worth it?

I know I want to get the game, but I'm not sure I want to spend that much money on a PS3 game...

I have it and I believe its worth it. The pocket watch and the artbook is really nice. If your a fan of the series, then why not? Otherwise, you can pass on it and get the game for cheap later.

Woohoo, 3000/3000 for the Lightning Saga! :D
I don't think I'll make it this time. I got the plat on both the previous games, but this one takes the cake for boring me to death. I'm on day 6 with almost everything done questwise and I'm having a real hard time just finishing it. Only one boss has even posed a challenge so far and I'm sure it's the same cockblock fight for everyone that doesn't prepare for it properly. Soon as I threw on the Miqo'te garb though, it was easymode. I just keep telling myself, gotta beat it before Dark Souls II. . .

I picked it up too. If you're into artbooks and collectables, then I'd recommend it, especially with the "special" DLC outfit. Otherwise, you should wait til it's cheaper.

Dat 1000/1000 garb.

Exterminated about 20 species by day 8. Now I'm wishing I saved the omega's until day 10 so I could get level 4 skills. Welp, I guess there's always hard mode to get those mythril components...

Late to the party but downed Aeronite tonight.  At this point I'm pretty sure I'm skipping the plat with DS2 tomorrow.  Between raids and just needing to beat this game tomorrow, I'm not looking to grind anymore bullshit for this game lol.  Sad thing is, I finally had fun with the game tonight just spending about two hours learning the aeronite fight and tweaking things until I could get to phase 4 consistently.  Then it was a matter of having the DPS to kill him in 3 minutes heh.

This is how the entire game should have been with boss fights.  Not just so rollface that it took no strategy on my part to beat. :\

Looks like the samurai garbs were all made available today, along with the Aerith outfit from the CE. There's also a reduced-price bundle of the Cloud, Aerith, and Gunner Yuna outfits.

Only have schrodinger and the final day monsters left to extinct. Once I have schrodinger, I'm sleeping my way to the end.

Found an outworlder selling elixirs in Aryas Village last night and save scummed that trophy. Feels GOOD. Should be able to plat this game tonight since I only have the 13th day and ultimate lair trophies left. Debating whether or not I should trade it in.

Doesn't have too.much replay value and story's too flawed to warrant another playthrough.

I say trade it in. I'm personally starting last of us soon.

Still have the accessory upgrade trophy left and the final day monsters to go. Poison makes that one enemy trivial...so glad I read the FAQ on it and emptied out the final dungeon before I got there. I really wish I locked in the trade value last week. el oh el

I guess I'll keep it for a while and boost on Hard for level 4 skills and max some weapons just to start dealing insane damage for the fun of it.

After a finally satisfying ending (read: happy), I'm done with this series at last.  Don't care about the plat because the game isn't worth playing for it.  Honestly, there was no need to pad this series and drag it out the way they did because while XIII-2 somewhat redeemed the first game, this one just threw everything in the trash.  The four locales long wear out their welcome before the mundane, shitty quests do and it all plays to the same tune of souls needing saving.  The entire game is as soulless (thank you, I'll be here all week) as Lightning's personality and the major problem is a forced story.  Everything is bent to tie in with all the convoluted mess that started with the first game, which leaves you feeling apathetic at this point.  Even the game is self-aware, at one point explaining why you shouldn't care about the people in the story.

Before I get lost in a rant, I will say that I enjoyed some of the more intelligent points brought up and the combat can be rewarding when actually given a challenge.  That said, I hope XV can pick up where Final Fantasy was lost, circa PS1.
