Final Fantasy XIV Official Thread

i have a macbook pro, so it's likely the video card isn't good enough.

i get a "ffxivboot.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" window.
You didn't have to wait this long. SE has had the authenticator available for two years now. It happily keeps my XI account more secure.
When I played and quit FFXI, authenticators weren't available, it was that long ago. I would have bought one had it been offered then. I am looking forward to having one linked to my FFXIV account from the start though.

And its sucks that some of you have the beta and can't get it to even download. (Although I thought one of SE's nondisclosure rules about the beta was "nobody talks about even being in the beta" LOL). Nothing more frustrating that FREE BETA that won't download or work properly on your PC.

I think it was mostly don't talk about even being in the Alpha, not the beta...but you may be right.

Also, yeah, more than likely it is your card, you should see how many people are not able to run the game at all and need to do some major upgrades. Some of the recommended specs are on their website.

Seeing as the beta went open, you guys can probably find a whole lot more info out there. I think the only thing not allowed at the moment is video.
Is FilePlanet the best place to get a beta key right now? http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/final-fantasy-xiv/
It is one place, but I don't think it's a great one. Basically you have to become a paid subscriber and you MIGHT get a key. It seems to be a higher probability, but something about paying them to even get a chance rubs me the wrong way. I am holding out to see if I can get it some other way.

I did not read the fine print. x_x
How do you change resolution in-game? Right now everything runs windowed, and about 1/3 the size of my display.
Never mind. There's a separate configuration utiltiy.

Hey all

So, Guild Leves are given out by guilds, right? So do these correspond to Story Missions (FF11 equilvalent: Bastok/Zilart Mission quests) or are they more like quests given out by random people or are they more like quests given out to Lancers or Culnarians?

I ask because everyone is saying that the GLs are limited to a certain number every 48 hours. But if they are like the City Missions from 11, then once we all get to he point where Bastok/Sandoria/Windurst people get togther, then you can party on those all day. If they are lke quests for given jobs, then as long as you have a varied party, then there would be no overlap. I was wondering about questions like these.

Thanks for looking.

Guildleves are like random quests that give out rewards usually gil and sometimes an item (whether gear or a crafting item depends on the type of levequest). As of right now these levequests are given by two characters, one handles quests for DoW/DoM/DoL and the other handles quests for DoH)

They are nothing like the missions from XI. These are just your basic go kill these rats and have a reward variety (or if crafting it would be go make a scarf and give it to them, or if DoL go cut 3 pieces of wood from a tree).

Now, that this will change is up in the air. It might be possible that you could find other NPCs who could give out levequests. As of right now these are the only type of quests available. Though I am sure that real type of quests like in XI will be added. Now there is a storyline quest that is available that seems like a city mission as it deals with a story progression. It offers some gil rewards and in one part some experience points while you do an escort mission.

So not 100% sure if these would be the city missions yet. Those might have to be added as well.

Wish I signed up for this when I had the chance... Is it against their Terms if you guys livestream it? If not, could one of you set a uStream up or Livestream, and stream some gameplay? :D?

yeah, this is what the official twitter announcement said
The FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Test Phase 3 will end on August 25, then move to the Open Beta Test in early September. Get ready!

Wait, Open beta?!? AWESOME!
Keep in mind "open beta" doesn't mean anyone can join. It just means that the NDA is lifted, for the most part. It's still by invite-only.

There is no NDA right now.

I've been looking at some vids on youtube and this game seems really slow. Lots of reading and slow walking around, slow fighting. I'm sick of playing WoW though so I'm hoping this will be fun. Can anyone comment on what seems to be a slow pace of the game? Thanks!

Here is the info for the open beta.
The details for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test are described below.

Operating Procedure
Schedule:
Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 19:00 (PDT)

*The Open Beta Test will be online continuously for 24 hours a day.
*Maintenance and any other announcements will be posted accordingly.

*Information on testing dates and times will also be posted on the official FINAL FANTASY XIV Twitter feed.
http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_JP
http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_EN
http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_DE
http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_FR

Log-in Capacity
During the initial stages of the beta test, the number of players allowed to be logged in at any given time will be limited, with capacity to gradually increase as adjustments are performed on server load. Should the maximum capacity already be reached when you attempt to log in, a message will appear indicating that the world is currently congested, and you will be asked to try again in a short while. At this time you will be placed on a waiting list in the order of attempted log-in time. To maintain your position on the waiting list, you must initiate the log-in procedure again within ten minutes of your first attempt.

Feedback Submission
While playing, testers who have been asked to submit opinions on anything at all regarding topics such as game balance issues, settings that you may have found difficult to understand, and features that you felt were inconvenient, unintuitive, or required further explanation are asked to use the feedback thread, and for those testers who have been assigned the task of reporting bugs are asked to use the bug report form.
And it got postponed.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test Postponed

FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, which is scheduled to begin at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010, will be postponed due to a confirmation of critical bugs. New schedule will be released at a later date.

Along with the postponement of FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, the issuing of registration code for FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test will be postponed as well. With the download of client software's installer, it will be suspended at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
And it got postponed.
*sigh* At least I got the client download finished...which took like 12 hours. I can't imagine what it will be like when open beta is really opened.

Well that sucks. I've still got 25 hours to go on the client update though so I probably wouldnt've been able to play tonight anyways.

If your download speed is slow (less than 100kb), port forwarding should fix that. I don't know all the specific ports, but this port range does include all of them:

54992 - 55551

Not only that, but you could always use utorrent, especially after you initially part of the torrent patches. There's a couple of steps to follow, but I think they're easy to find.
I was able to get a key 20 min ago. Of course, now the update server is down. :bomb:
I just patched but it took like half an hour because it sat on 0kb/s and only downloaded in short spurts, heading back to 0kb/s pretty quickly. Though I already had the main game downloaded and patched from before.

EDIT: Made a character named Sorcha on the Melmond Server in the starting town of Limsa if anyone cares. Don't know how much, long, or often I'll be playing this.

I got a beta key yesterday and was able to log on to the servers and played for about an hour.

Keyboard controls for this are fucked. I gave up trying to play with the keyboard and mouse (awkward setup, laggy mousepointer, horrible camera control) and just dusted off an old Logitech gamepad to use as a controller. Until SE sees fit to update the pc controls, you WILL need a controller for this.

I get random disconnects from the game servers too...but that's to be expected in a beta test. Graphics are beautiful and it seems to be running smoothly on my pc.

I actually don't have any problems with the keyboard. I use right-click drag for camera control and I *never ever click any menu buttons*. Hit - on the 10-key for the menu, arrow keys to get through it, no problems.

The main problem with the game right now is mob density. You have to grind once leves are done, but there's WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE. I see like 10+ people per mob, it's insane.

So I finally get to add the FFXIV beta to my account services (so excited) but when it brings me to the forums my account isn't valid and it won't let me register one.

Does anyone have a dev-na.ffxiv.com account I can use to download the client?

I still have not gotten a code. I hate the fact that everyone had to apply for a code...it would have been nice to those who already were in the initial waves to continue being in it. Oh well.

Anyways, I always promote a gamepad for this game and FFXI. Some may have no problems, but I think out of 100 people about 10 are ok with the keyboard it seems. That has been the biggest complain, and I do not see any change coming.

Holy shit, now that I think about it, you're right. I was playing at 10p.m. at night, and the only unclaimed mobs I saw were for my guild leves. I was kind of shocked my PC wasn't lagging out more because of all the people. I'll be surprised if those servers don't die this weekend.

Finally was able to get in. I've got everything set on the lowest settings and all the effects turned off and it is still laggy as hell.

Right now im just grinding a bit by my town, I signed up for a couple quests but I cant figure out how to see them or where im supposed to go to complete them. I'll probably spend some quality time with the Wiki page and read up about the ins & outs of the game.

Now are these the levequests or new quests. If levequests just go to the camp you initially chose to do the quests. Then you activate them by being close to the giant crystal (forgot the name right now). Open your main menu and you you should see that option, and that is how you start a levequest.

Try http://www.ffxivorigin.com they do have some good info in the articles and friendly people to answer your questions. Some of the questions you have may already be answered.

how the heck do you go on quests. im in this camp with other people and can't seem to get out and actually do something. sorry, im a noob at thes mmos

Yea, ive been having issues connecting all day. At first it kicked me out when i'd go to the character select screen. Then it started kicking me out after the "start" screen. Now I cant even connect to the update server.

*EDIT*

Welp, I completed the update, and now it says It cant find "FFXIVgame.exe" and crashes. God, i hate this beta.

Read the post right above you.

I found that using my 360 controller with this game was more tolerable than using the keyboard. Hopefully they make some changes before this gets released to make it easier to use the arrows on the keyboard to move around. Although this almost feel like a port from a console anyway, so I may end up playing it on the PS3.

Finally got into the beta- will download when I get home later. Glad I got the XBox controller with wireless receiver pack for $40 from Amazon. :D

find the metadata folder in "my games-->FFXIV" and use those torrent links to download the patches into that directory.

I would actually suggest doing this for all patches. The client has always given me a problem as well as others. Using something like utorrent for the patches you get it in minutes if not less.
