The Chinese River Dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer) was a freshwater dolphin found only in the Yangtze River in China. Other names include Baiji ( Pinyin: báijì), Beiji, Pai-chi (Wade-Giles), Whitefin Dolphin, Whiteflag Dolphin, Yangtze Dolphin, and Yangtze River Dolphin. The super-family of river dolphins include also the Boto and the La Plata Dolphin. Nicknamed "Goddess of the Yangtze" (長江女神) in China, it was declared "functionally extinct" after an expedition in late 2006 failed to find any in the river.

I first read about these guys in Douglas Adams' book Last Chance to See 12 years ago.

Goodbye, friends. I'm sorry we couldn't save you.

Perhaps next time we will remember you, and be a little wiser, a little more compassionate.

That's a great book, and an even greater author.

While there are a small handful of Chinese river dolphin left in captivity, it is too late for them.

So we can clone sheep but not near extinct river dolphins?
So we can clone sheep but not near extinct river dolphins?
Yeah, we've got their DNA. They'll be back sooner or later.

only if we can create mini versions to keep as pets

There are problems with using cloning to save a species. First of all you need a mother to carry the cloned embryo, and these dolphins are very rare even in captivity. Also, the genetic diversity of a species is very important for it's survival in the wild, so if we just try to clone some and use those to bring back the species there will be all sorts of birth defects and problems with their offspring. Cloning could be good enough to keep a few alive in zoos, but is probably unrealistic for preventing their extinction in the wild.

Chinese River Dolphins will once again become a delicacy in their native waters.

What would be the point of cloning them if they have no habitat to live in?
What would be the point of cloning them if they have no habitat to live in?
There's probably non-stunk up rivers similar to the Yangtze somewhere.

Holy God? where is green peace when need them?

I mean if they are there then we just need to capture a female and male and mate them.

Still holy god almighty why?

china would string up green peace by their pasty white ankles. communism dont put up with that shit.
Goodbye river dolphin. Say hi to the wooly mammoth and passenger pigeon for me in that big zoo in the sky
Did we kill the mammoth?
Did we kill the mammoth?
Some argue that our ancestors were partly responsible for their extinction by hunting them.

China is not that strict with people from out of town. They will let you go bout your business however if your a reporter or official like that they will stop you in your tracks at events.

Green Peace negotiatiing with the wild life preserve people there will not mean any harm since they are a private organization.
Screw this dolphin. Look at it. It's red.

Commie bastards invading my rivers. Good riddance I say!
If this was Roman days you would have been whipped for those remarks or killed even.

In Roman days they wouldn't have had any idea what a Communist/Communism are.

They also wouldn't understand my English.

Much like how most people don't understand yours.
Chinese River Dolphins will once again become a delicacy in their native waters.
Hence the reason for it's extinction.

I eat meat, I'm not going to be a hypocrite. But countries such as China, Japan, Korea, et cetera ought to learn to harvest and repopulate. We have dominion over the animals, sure. But with that comes responsibility. To raise and treat with respect, common sense and dignity. Is that so much to ask for?

*goes off to make an omelette with free range eggs*

Species die out, get over it. Next you'll be telling me that prick-nosed dolphin shit cures cancer. Shall we cry about the dinosaurs extinction? How about the Tasmanian Tiger? I guess only cute squeaky species are worthy of lament and pretentious mourning.

Buck up you crybaby nature freaks - someday the human race will be extinct, and no one will be crying when we leave. I'm sure you hippie wannabees think of that as some sort of divine justice, so be it.

They say things are dead all the time and they turn out to still be alive. We should raise some of these in zoos and see if we can save some (there has to be a few left somewhere) and once China wakes up (the USA too) we can release them into the wind in bigger numbers.

Yeah I'm dreaming.

wow, just wow...

He has a kid too. I wonder what's the point when you think humanity is doomed and you don't give a fuck about spaceship earth.

Can't we clone them and use regular dolphins as surrogates. I know in Brazil there is a fresh water dolphin in the Amazon. Maybe we can try to save the species by breeding them in Brazil

That is a good thing about the cure for AIDS. There is alot of animals that is said to have a defense against aids. Most animals like the rat and monkey dies early due to the aids that is passed down.

It has been found some species of plants is also effective against aids. However due to humanities stupidity that is going to be a hard one.

Also in Africa there is a couple of people who has been found ammune agiant aids. However with all the dumb gencide going on.
That is a good thing about the cure for AIDS.
I know it's unpopular to point this out, but HIV is a virus... and to date we have yet to cure a single virus. Not one. Common cold? Nope. We still don't understand viruses. A cure for AIDS/HIV won't be for a long, long while.

And if anyone doubts my authority in speaking on this, I was just named Time's Person of the Year.

There's people who are immune against giant AIDS?

I don't think I can even handle the regular strain!

A virus is a being in which it exsists only to pass on it's genetics and explode out of the cell. The thing is we have ways and many cures to stop viruses the HIV or AIDS attacks the white blood cells instead of the Red blood cells.

They have found by infecting the protiene the virus goes after they can attack the virus itself.

I understand that we need research on beings like these dolphins for example to wipe them out.

The option is to round up the people who have the virus and remove them from the public. LIke a camp or something maybe a mark on there body.
We still have too many morons out there spreading germs to each other and that is the problem. We remove those people we remove the cause.

It would be just like a super-sized leper colony. Just dump them all on Australia. Afterwards, no one goes in, no one comes out.

Or not.

Apparently, you've never heard of that little known research on that experimental treatment called vaccination.

And my own glorious body fights off 1 or 2 viruses every cold season. I guess that shold make me Man of the Year as well.

Yes, the body is able to fight off most viral illnesses. But that has little to nothing to do with my earlier statement.

I guess that shold make me Man of the Year as well.
No, you're just a number.
