Folding@Home on PS3: Team Cheap Ass Created!

DMK.....what....the.....fuck.

108 processors? Are you fucking kidding us?

Who'd you kill in the computer lab to pull that off? :applause:

Well, we signed up our (jezebelseven and I) new PS3 yesterday under her name, completed our first WU on that, and I just signed up the PC under my name.

Looks like we just broke the top 300 and are definitely passing more teams than are passing us!

I let mine run for about 36 hours and did for 4 WU. I'll probably leave it on again tonight as well...just annoying the damn LEDs on the PS3 are too damn bright with all the lights out...

I've thought about that. Use some black electrical tape. This may sound really off the wall, but I wonder how bondage tape would do? It wouldn't leave any residue, as its designed to not pull on hair when you pull it off the body...

Wow. Thanks for the absolute best post of this thread, Snatcher! And glad to have you on board. :)

After a prolonged absence, I'm back on the team and folding like a mofo. I'm aiming to get back into the top 50 and am absolutely delighted to see that Team Cheap Ass Gamer broke into the top 300 out of over 86k teams. This is pretty amazing stuff. Keep folding, guys!

Folding@home and PS3 reach Guinness Records

Pretty cool to be a part of that.

Folding@home continues to get the attention of the mainstream media. PS3's large network of Cell-enabled PS3 systems has significantly boosted the abilities of Stanford University's research program. So much so, in fact, that the program recently was recognized by the Guinness Records. Over 670,000 unique PS3 users have registered to the Folding@home network, and combined they have achieved the petaflop mark on September 23, 2007. This has placed the program as the most powerful distributed computing network ever.
"To have Folding@home recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead. "Without them we would not be able to make the advancements we have made in our studies of several different diseases. But it is clear that none of this would be even remotely possible without the power of PS3, it has increased our research capabilities by leaps and bounds."
"To have PS3 play such a large role in allowing Folding@home to be honored by Guinness World Records is truly incredible," said Masayuki Chatani, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Technology Platform, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "This record is clear evidence of the power of PS3 and the contributions that it is making to the Folding@home network, and more importantly, scientific research."

I had 30% done on a project, and I went to go Fold right now and its back to 0%. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

just joined the cag team. forgot all about home teams until it was mentioned on the last cagcast.

Lets try to be the number 1 team!!!!

Contest time!

Tis the season to be giving away stuff....so I figure I'd start by giving something away to the faithful triple folding@home team.

Contest is only for those who have produced points this week, and I just took a screenshot, so I know there are 58 of you. (57 minus myself)

I figure I'll draw a name out of a hat sometime tomorrow or Sunday....and the winner will get courtesy of me....one of these:

Pretty spiffy keyboard, if I do say so myself, and I know all you triple owners could use one for something.

Just a small thanks from me to those who constantly produce on our team day in and day out. I'll post the winner sometime over the weekend, and mail it out on Tuesday.

Thanks ;)

Sorry, everyone....got a bit tied up with mom's birthday and the normal Sunday poker....I'll move the drawing to Monday afternoon. That should give me time to draw up the little chart I'll need for the winner.

Alrighty....this is how it worked:

1. Everyone went onto a sheet except for myself and that infamous "PS3" (the bastard...)

2. Everyone was numbered according to points production for the week.

3. I set it up like a standard NCAA March Madness bracket...1 vs 64, 2 vs 63, etc.

4. Some people got byes in certain rounds due to the odd number of people playing.

5. The coin. Heads was always the higher number, tails the lower.

6. Many flips later, I came down to one winner.

...........and a hearty congratulations goes to perhaps the oldest living member of CAG, and everyone's favorite ex-mod:

Shrike4242.

Congratulations to you, sir...you'll have to PM me your address so I can get this shipped out tomorrow for you.

This won't be the last contest I run this month for those who continually produce on the F@H team, so stay tuned. :D
I smell foul play.
And I see someone that, if my eyes don't deceive me, hasn't folded a lick since his original Japanese triple.

.......circle lover. :booty:

Congrats to Shrike!

...and I think I'm one of those "PS3" bastards. Just figured out how to update my username last night. Bah!

That's not true.

I folded two WUs the first week I got my 40GB! :)

I've started getting in the habit of if I'm not doing anything on my PS3, I just set it to start folding while watching TV, sleeping, or running around town. heh, in other words, if I'm not using my PS3 for its main purpose.

As for Shrike being the oldest living member of CAG...I plan on turning my partner onto gaming and try to get him on here, and hes 47 lol. If I can pull that off, I guess our lovable Shrikey won't have that crown anymore (unless you still want it ;-) lol ) Hell, even collaborated online this weekend in coming up with his PSN name, PlayItAgainKane.

What does Advanced Mode do?

I turned it on, but I'm not noticing anything different.

Just found out:

Advanced Participation Mode - Folding@Home's "Hard Difficulty" mode allows Stanford to send your PS3 uber-l33t scientific models which require massive amounts of uninterrupted participation at a stretch to complete. Only for the hardcore, Advanced Mode is designed for contributors who have the ability to run Folding@home for at least eight hours per day.

I guess I'll leave it on since I've had my That Triple running for the past 36 hours.

New Folding@Home features coming!

Music playback!!!

As we approach one million PLAYSTATION 3 consoles participating in the Folding@Home program, we continue to improve the FAH client. With the new Firmware v2.1 we also prepared an updated version of FAH, which can soon be automatically downloaded by clicking on the FAH icon. This updated version includes the following new features:

If you happen to be one of the people that wants to leave their machine running after they finished their late-night gaming session, but wish to shut it down after a limited period of time, we have a great tip for you:
o Go to Settings menu, select Automatic Shutdown and then After Current. You will see a little clock appearing on the top right hand corner of the screen. When this clock reaches zero, the machine will power off completely so you can sleep quietly through the night. In this option the machine will power off after sending the data back to Stanford University so your contribution to the project is maximized.
o You may also choose to shut down after a limited period of time (for example, 3 or 4 hours). To do that choose the Automatic Shutdown option and click on the “In 01h:00m” timer. You will now be able to change the timer settings. After rotating the timer to a new time, you should now see your selected timer appear at the top right corner of the screen. This timer will count all the way down to 0 and then power off the system.
o
o To disable active timer at any time, go to Settings, choose Automatic Shutdown and then Disable.

What’s a better Holiday addition to Folding than playing music? We’ve added a great feature in this version in the form of a background music player:

o To activate the music player select Music and then a channel. The channels are automatically populated with songs you have stored on your Hard Disk Drive! For holiday music I prefer to choose Dramatic (yeah!) and voila - music is playing.
o If you wish to skip to another track, just use a combination of X + left or right arrow. You can also change the channel by choosing X + up or down arrow. Happy listening!
o To stop music from playing, select Music again from the main menu and choose “disable.”
o Your music playback selection will be saved between consecutive runs of Folding@home.

We hope that these enhancements help improve your FAH experience. The response from PS3 owners really has been spectacular, and thanks to you, the most powerful distributed computer network in the world continues to grow.

The update has been up for a little while now. Just got it myself and it works. Took only about around a minute to download and to have it install the update.

You might want to wait until you finish your current WU though. I'm not sure but mine started a new one and I'm not sure if that is because of the update or because it finished the last one it was on.

The music selection is a little odd. I can't figure out how to just pick which songs I want to play... and I'm not sure you can. It takes it a little while to sort your music into catagories though I have a lot of songs on my HD. You won't be able to select certain modes until it is done sorting and can just check back later. From what I am reading, it will remember where the music is sorted next time you run it though.

OK I just downloaded this program and messed around with the options for a bit, when you view the world map how do you zoom around in on the map and dots for where it shows the population who's folding?

Also, I sort of understand how the team things work. I read the FAQ, but maybe I misunderstood something..
For example if I want to contribute to finding a cure for lung cancer, do I have to create my own team dedicated to it or find a team dedicated to fighting cancer, or does the American Cancer Society have it's own team?

Thanks
In for 1. I like the new feature for turning it off after it completes the current WU.
Would have to agree, I leave my ps3 folding while I am sleeping sometimes and it is nice to know that it won't be adding to my electric bill the whole night.
