Format War - HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray - *Its Over...Toshiba Swings White Flag*
That is the stupidest reason to avoid Blu Ray I have ever heard
I think that's more of an outloud cry to shock as in why Blu-Ray is winning when to the average consumer the term HD DVD means High Def DVD and its easier to understand and grasp than Blu-Ray.
Ten dollar HD DVD players.

Where the hell is Gizmo?
He needs to state his peace.... piece? Holy crap, which is it? I've never had to write that down.
You know he'll say that Sony is the devil, and paid off Warner, All Warner movies suck anyways, etc..........
I think that's more of an outloud cry to shock as in why Blu-Ray is winning when to the average consumer the term HD DVD means High Def DVD and its easier to understand and grasp than Blu-Ray.
But on the other hand of that, Blu Ray is something new & fresh to people, while HD DVD is more of the same

That's what I mean by that crummy comment. Yeah, I'm still shocked. To make matters worse, I convinced my GF to buy into HD DVD last year. She's going to be pissed.

I will eventually buy blu ray if HD DVD goes the way of the dodo; however, I am going to wait for players to be mega cheap ($99) before I spend more money on HD media.
Now, how do I break the news to my gf?

So I guess my Target $2.23 copy of "As Is" Norbit I bought today isn't going to sway anything huh? But then again, I used my $10 coupon for Pirates 3 today too, so perhaps I've caused this.

I really need to hit up Gamestop in the next week, assuming they are still doing the "Buy 2 get 2" dvd sales. I'm sure lots of folks will be dumping off collections.
But on the other hand of that, Blu Ray is something new & fresh to people, while HD DVD is more of the same
Yea, I know what you mean. HD-DVD sounds like it could mean DVD 2.0, while Blu-ray sounds like it would be the next step (and not just an upgrade). I realize this isn't the case, but it's one possible explanation?
BTW, Anyone have any inkling how this effects New Line? Warners Bros is New Line "sister" company.

And what CAN HD-DVD do?
has nothing to do with the thread but cornerstone i do have to say..long live your avatar:applause:
Now, how do I break the news to my gf?
Act like you're breaking up with her. Then, towards the end, say you're joking and that HD-DVD just lost Warner. By comparison, the news won't seem all that bad ;)

I read over in the HDD forums that New Line is going Blu only too, but that's not a suprise, because they might as well have been from the start.
Translation: "We got kicked in the nuts hard, give us some time to recover and come back with a rebutal..."

I really hope they have something up their sleeve.
I imagine it will be something on the level of Paramount/Fox back in the day (but this time it will be Paramount announcing a shitload of titles, one of which I imagine will be The Godfather series)
Act like you're breaking up with her. Then, towards the end, say you're joking and that HD-DVD just lost Warner. By comparison, the news won't seem all that bad ;)
Should I give her the news before or after she starts crying?

ALSO:
I feel like punching Michael Imperioli in the throat.

So I'm guessing Warner's announcement at CES will be Matrix, Batman Begins, V for Vendetta all coming to Blu-Ray...

I hate you Blu-Ray backers even more now that I know The Dark Knight will be Blu-Ray exclusive...ugh...guess the upconverted DVD will have to do.

Blue-Rei sounds cooler and easier on the tongue than "Hide-da-vid". Why, that's why I chose BR!

hooray for batman begins (finally) and the dark knight!

i'm one of the chumps that got a hd-dvd player after transformers was released. blah whatever. not all that bad though. at least when all the B&Ms have a firesale on hd-dvds, we'll get em for dirt cheap. congrats to sony though.
why did i have to buy a 360 add on during the heroes deal :bomb::cold:
Because Getting the HD-DVD add on with a free copy of HD Heroes (80-100 bucks), King Kong with a nice remote (in the package), Planet Earth (80-100 bucks), Transformers HD-DVD(only cause Linkin kept on raving about it, even though I already had 3 copies of the movie :whistle2:( ) and 5 so so free HD-DVD movies by mail all for 180 bucks when it should have come to over 500+ dollars if I bought it one by one.

So yea I feel your pain. Once I upgrade my system, I am hooking up the HD-DVD player to my new rig.

oh yea I forgot to mention......... Guess the Porn Industry won't affect the outcome now that Warner has done it for them.

They have been saying that for a long time, that the porn industry will determine the winner of this war and last time I read, the Porn Industry was in favor of HD-DVD.

God I hope so.

And geko was that really the reason? I couldn't fathom Sony and MS working together, and wasn't aware that MS help developed HDi.

The hate won't come until studios put all future new movies on Blue Ray as the only way to get the movie (minus piracy) and give SD-DVD the boot :(

That was only because it helped decide the VHS and Betamax war. Back then, porn wasn't as free-flowing as it is today. It's 2008, and everyone with a computer has a 24/7 free porn channel called "The Internet". Who buys porn on DVD, let alone HD DVD or BD?

It's been awhile but I remember reading something like the porn industry liked some of the features that were offered with HD-DVD technology.

Batman Begins was pseudo-confirmed in a preview video of the BDA's CES video, which showed a split-second snippet, but also listed it as "available on Blu-Ray now" in the credits. The BD insiders are saying, though, that all signs are pointing to a re-encode for BD and a release a week or two prior to The Dark Knight.

Why hate? Just accept life and buy a PS3. Ain't a better time to do so.

That ain't nothin' when you look at the highdefdigest forums. Holy COW those folks make Gizmo look like a level-headed homie. And, that's where Gizmo went, by the way, to spread his gospel of Disney releasing videos on 51GB HD DVD discs.

I don't think there's really any hindsight to consider here and say "oh, I saw ____ happen and should have known it was going to be like this." At least if you're saying "oh, BB was putting them on sale to get 'em out of the store." That's not the case since both formats have been given lots of sales equally. Moreover, Toshiba's release from today screams of "WHAT THE HELL, DUDE!?!?!?!" It certainly reads like they had no idea that this was coming.

I bet it won't look ANY better then the HD DVD. This bandwidth optimization crap is nonsense. Comparisons between even optimized one's have shown minimal pic difference, see NIN disc.
Why hate? Just accept life and buy a PS3. Ain't a better time to do so.
Hate, because Warner chose Blu-Ray...well not hate, just bitter I guess. Won't be buying a PS3 anytime soon either. I'm seriously running out of places to put my HD DVD's, Videogames, and DVD's so I might just go the digital distribution way and rent movies through XBLM. A year or so down the road I may get a PS3, only if the price is right (-$200) and if the game library is enough to entice me to get one.
I might just go the digital distribution way and rent movies through XBLM.
Good lord, ain't *you* a company man to the bitter end! I can appreciate the "running out of room argument," but I'd rather order something from PPV in SD or HD and be able to keep it on my DVR/capture it and put it on my iPod/DVD that deal with those silly-ass restrictions (and $0.26 higher cost!) of the XBLM.

That's not a bad idea, maybe I can get a HD DVD burner down the road and continue my collection without Warner's help...then again my digital cable is through Time Warner...Maybe I should looking into satellite...:whistle2:k...kidding.

I understand your anger but imagine if any of the imports go cheap. "Volcano High" for $20-25 on HD DVD? Yes please. Especially since FOX is too fucking stupid to release over here anytime soon with Lossless audio. No date for "Daywatch" either.

I just don't understand why anybody would want digital distribution.

Not only would you have to REBUY everything that was stored on the media device (if it crashed), but you might not even (legally) own the download....

I hope that by the time that digital distribution is the method of choice for the providers and the consumers that the DRM issues would have been worked out by then. It has a long way to go still, but with apple offereing drm free music it is a start.

I'll take Lossless instead. When will we have an online service offering that?

I'm with Link on this. This is a gigantic fuck you to Warner. What happened to the ultimate extras that you were putting only on HD-DVD until BD-i Java was up and running. You can eat a fat one just like Sony because all they want is to make that horrendous "fingerprint friendly" black box a staple in videogaming again. fuck you both up your stupid A$$E$
And geko was that really the reason? I couldn't fathom Sony and MS working together, and wasn't aware that MS help developed HDi.
MS developed HDi more or less on their own. They took suggestions from other people, naturally, but did just about all of the development and own most of the IP.

They really did see this format war and (either) eventual victor as simply another cash cow. With HDi and VC-1 in use on both formats, they were guaranteed $$$ no matter what happens. Blu-Ray wins? Great! We get paid. HD DVD wins? Great! We get paid. Stalemate? same deal. Both fail, well we've got downloads, we still get paid. It really was a no-lose situation, until Sony threw a wrench in their plans. :) Then there was one option that was worse than all the others, so they threw their weight behind the opposition.

ps3 for -200 bucks? the definition of a cheap ass gamer :applause:

Right price for me!

Why would WB do this AFTER Christmas shopping? They know too well HD-DVD players were on sale at that time and people were buying them. Now they just tried to screw us by making us buy it and already have opened.

The word was going around that Warner was specifically going to see which format moved the most hi-def discs over the holiday. Part of the price for being an early adopter...especially when it comes to technology.
ps3 for -200 bucks? the definition of a cheap ass gamer :applause:
i doubt i would of even been format neutral had i not gotten good price (doesnt seem so good now) for my 20gb ps3 back then..

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news..._HBO_Not_Covered_By_Blu-ray_Announcement/1328

Though it's widely expected that Warner Bros. subsidiaries New Line and HBO will follow Warner Home Entertainment to Blu-ray exclusivity, for the moment they remain format-agnostic.

That's according to Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara, who said that the studio's announcement that it would drop HD DVD support does not extend to titles released by New Line, HBO or the BBC (which Warner distributes here in the US).

"They'll be making whatever decision they're going to make," said Tsujihara. "I assume they'll let people know very quickly, but they are not covered by this initial announcement."

Tsujihara's comments came in a post-announcement conference call with various members of the media, including High-Def Digest.

Stay tuned for more news from the Warner conference call...

But how long untill we see reasonable priced Blu-ray players? Does anyone think by next xmas standalones will be down to 150 bucks?

And don't tell me to get a PS3. I'm thinking about getting it for my parents HDTV. If I got them a PS3 they wouldn't have an Fing clue how to use it for games.

I also wonder what movies they will put out before May.

Consider New Line a done deal, regardless of what Warner's contracts require them NOT to say when referring to the companies they distribute for. They've been doing timed exclusives for Blu-Ray already, and just released their first title with a BR-exclusive encode (for their 4th release). They only have one HD DVD title released as it is, with three more planned but not announced.

HBO and BBC will do whatever they like, but, regardless of Planet Earth's AMAZING sales, they don't matter in the grand scheme of things anyway.
Can someone sum up what's been goin' on lately? Seems like somethin' big just went down :dunce:
Short version: Warner Brothers and most likely New Line just went Blu-Ray exclusive. Accordingly, while the war is not officially over yet, the wrting is on the wall and it's only a matter of time now....
Can someone sum up what's been goin' on lately? Seems like somethin' big just went down :dunce:
Warner said they are going to be Blu-ray exclusive starting May 2008.

Edit: Oops. A little late!

Even though this might end the war, its also kills Blu-ray from needing to make the best deals. There is no more competition so they will take there time with cheaper players and movie deals. They don't have to worry about anyone else so they can take there time. Competition on makes companies strive to be the best and the consumer wins, no competition and the company wins.
