I traded Bully, Assassins Creed, WWE SvR07, and Fifa 08 and got $72 credit. Bought Fable 2 and have $6 leftover, plus the $20 off gears coupon. Not bad at all. The only problem was that when he typed the game code (SKU?) from the Future Shop site into the store computer the TIV's were different from that of Future Shop's site. It was cool, though, he just changed them. This was at the Future Shop in Kanata.
I Just traded 3, games that qualify for the $20 off, but i didnt get a coupon, only a receipt , should i go back and ask for a coupon?

Yeah, the guys that rang them in for me were laughing.. "Assassins Creed gets $23? What? That's over a year old and we even sell it for $30...and Fifa for $18? God damn!"...

Awesome.
For those who work at Futureshop (or Bestbuy), how much does a 59.99 game cost with the Employee Discount?
I just started at Best Buy, and apparently the discount works at both stores. Also, how much does a typical 14.99 CD cost? Thanks.

From when I worked at FS and my girlfriend worked at BB, you'd be lucky to save a toonie on new release games via staff discount. Used games, of course, might be another story...

Thats what I figured. There seem to be pretty hot deals on some other stuff (i.e. not media stuff).

Not much. New games generally are the same price after you apply the 10%, no clue about used games.

The web portal produces different values from the POS terminal STAR system. The portal price will always over-ride the terminal price, which is generally good, as there have only been a few instances of the STAR system being higher.

Congrats, you're now part of the problem! Well maybe your side of the company's better managed in games than mine is =\. Which location did they post you in?

Yeah the screw us with having fake "cost" prices for games and stuff so we really just save on a dollar or two, if we're lucky.

If you want the REAL cost price you need to make the company a LOT of money for I think about three consistant three fiscal quarters and be part of some bollocks "Circle of Excellence", then you get "true" cost without the 10% addage. I hear they get the Guitar Hero World Tour full kit for about $80 (regular dregs who don't make the company a lot of money only get to buy it for a few bucks under $200).

The cost for a retailer for new release games is pretty close to the selling price, they only make about $5 off each game so they can't give you more than $2 or so off the price wihout taking a loss.

Yeah at my old store they called it the "grandfather/grandmother" program haha. Only about 3 people were in the program, and it was basically buying items on cost, as opposed to cost + 10%. So is three fiscal quarters essentially 9 months?

Everyone is apart of the circle of excellence - you have to be top ten for 3 quarters (4 quarters nets you $10k cash and a trip) and you become "elite". You don't get true cost - you just don't pay the 10%. They still pay the cost shown on the screen...I've been there :D

There is a dollar amount cap, though...don't remember in the slightest what it is, but you can only spend x dollars before having to pay the 10% again.

You get true cost now, one guy in my store is in that top 10% crap, he paid a few hundred dollars less than another guy who bought it on staff (EDIT: I mean a TV, "cost" stayed the same though) He's been top 10% for the longest time, he's already booked his trip (this year they get to go to Florida) and all that.

And not everyone's in it, games guys don't get it, and no one talks about it anymore except for the guy actually in it =\.

Sadly only sharks are in the top 10%, which is what you have to do I guess to be the "best".

And yeah three quarters is nine months.

Also greywolf if that shark guy can get ten bucks off straight from a game (Rainbow Six Vegas 2 when it first came out, the rest of us got it for a dollar less... that was before the 10% was added) or the Guitar Hero World Tour bundle (full kit, no guitar-only nonsense) for $80 (read) $80 dollars CND, there's gotta be a little more to it than that.

World Tour has accessories included, and as you should know, accessories is Future Shop's bread and butter ;)

Sorry, let me re-phrase: all commissioned sales persons are in the circle of excellence.

Also, to qualify for the trip you only need to average the top 10% for the term, whereas to be elite you need to maintain a top 10% status. Although those two may be mixed up...

Yay! I've always wanted to be part of the problem! To be honest, I can't see a better job than Best Buy being 15 years old. I'm working at the one in Hamilton (opens Nov. 14) and I'll transfer to Ancaster eventually because its a lot closer.

In all honesty it's a really sweet job, gaming retail is one of the best jobs that a pre-career person can get, it's chill, co-workers are awesome and you get paid to talk about games, how awesome is that? I may rip on FS' inner workings from time to time, but that's only 'cause of the occasional head office fuck up (like not having half our game releases come out on opening because of some fuck up up north).

Also those embarrassing morning meetings you see every once in a while we do? I dunno if Best Buy does them but get ready for them... every morning.

Every. Morning.

Every.... Morning.

If your Best Buy is the same as the one that my gf worked at, they have 7am Sunday morning every other week or so, hehe...man I'm 21 and I'm still trying to get into a FS/BB/EB Games...c'est la vie

How is everybody doing today?!

speaking of Best Buy, I was trying to apply for a job there, in the gaming section of all places. I hope I get in, all the other job opportunities around me are crap.
How is everybody doing today?!
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic!

In all seriousness, if anyone's looking for a job in the gaming section and you're in the West Toronto area, send me a PM with your full name and go apply online at the FS website (go to Queensway>Entertainment). I need all the gamers I can get (my manager's been hiring a bunch on non-gamers for my department, there's a guy who does not own a system, and he's in gaming, so crap).

There are hot discounts on headphones aren't there? I'm heading to Best Buy Ancaster to get some CDs and such and hopefully I can snag a good deal on some nice headphones.

EDIT: DAMN, they have amazing employee deals on headphones. HOT!

Seems I have a decent chance of becoming a problem too!

Just did my telephone interview for FS, and I'm going to an interview with the store manager on Saturday.

I'm going to be working in Entertainment, Gaming :D
Can you guys (specifically Azumangaman and Kathos) give me some pointers so that I can ace the interview?
What questions did they ask?
I just handed it in two days ago.
Did you apply at a T.O. store?
No, I'm in the US. Just figured you guys might have the same process over there.

I applied online. I was assuming FS had the same workings as Best Buy since they're owned by them. I've dropped by the Best Buy and was told to apply online.

Sorry, just to clarify, I applied online as well.

Did a 30-min questionnaire involving behavioral and ethical questions mostly.

Oh ok. I had to do a questionnaire also, it was 25 pages long.

I'll probably go back and see if they also have in-store applications again. I think the person I talked to didn't really pay attention :/

AFAIK, stores do not have in-store applications. They simply refer you to the online interview.

My bad, seems that I was a bit vague in my explanation.

By "hand-in," I mean I just completed the on-line application process and sent it in to be processed by some stores near me.

By "as well", I meant I did the online application like everyone else.

Hope that cleared that up. :)

Hmmm...
Best Buy MIGHT have different questions, but they seemed to be pretty basic/casual. They asked me what kind of music, movies and games I liked, and I had to sell an XBOX 360. I applied for Media though. Other typical interview questions (why are you a good choice for the job etc.) apply.

Good Luck!

Huh, Best Buy left me a message today telling me a Job Fair is happening tomorrow at the location I applied for.

Is this their way of doing interviews now? o_O

They also said to bring a resume if I have one (which I don't), I didn't think it'd be that much just applying for a position in the gaming/music/software section.
Guess I'll have to get crackin' on putting a resume together which I have no idea how >_< (never done it before)
Also, do not wear jeans or shorts - wear some nice(r) pants or khakis and a clean shirt.
Oh yeah. I wore dress pants and a polo, which I think Is probably just what they're looking for.

Look for sample resumes online and work off those, just change your name and don't lie on it (duh). It's your first job I'm guessing (or first job you actually would care about) since you don't have a resume so I don't think they'd expect you to have much on there.

And yes a big bulk of the hiring for seasonal and new store openings (or mass hirings for regulars) are done through job fairs, just to get through the mass with a large number or managers, ops, etc instead of wasting time doing one interview at a time one by one by one by one by one.... dead.
Seems I have a decent chance of becoming a problem too!

About 90% of the questions won't be questions, since you're already half way in the store they just want to get a feel for you to see if you really are a good fit in our well oiled (Mrs. Krabapple HAH! here) machine.

Also if you're going into gaming 90% of the questions will not be about gaming or movies (other than generic and inane "do u play gamez lawl:" or "do u wahtc mobies:??? duuur" questions), they'll be about (in order of importance):

- Can you work Boxing Day, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve? What's your availability like (perferrably ALL WEEK EVERY WEEK)?
- Have you sold warranties before (I won't lie to you CAGs)?
- We want you to provide excellent customer service, can you do that?
- What size shirt are you?

I'm so serious, I've never done/seen an interview where those questions came into play for my department, so if you ever see an idiot in the gaming department who can't tell a DS Lite from Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire on Blu Ray, blame corporate hiring practices! Although if you get a cool interviewer you'll get some fast balls about gaming and stuff ;). Off the record of course.

Apart from the job fairs, the online interview and the phone interview is just to kill of the bulk of the crap that tries to get into FS/BB, you'd be surprised the number of people trying to get in, it's a sweet job though wouldn't blame them. So if you get through the online and the phone and you get a direct interview, you gotta screw up pretty bad to not get in.

So heimdal, no cosplay, no giant fitted caps, no doorags, just dress nice, and polite. They just want to see if you'd look/act right in front of the customers.

Thanks for all the input.

The chick who interviewed me was kinda cool. She was asking questions from the book and asked me "How do you build report with a customer?" I'm like, "Do you mean rapport?" She said, "Is that how you say it? These questionnaires are so complicated!" LOL.

She told me to dress professionally, so dress shirt and pants it is then.

I really hope I get in, I remember when I was 16 and tried to get into Best Buy. I went for 3 interviews and in the end wasn't hired.

Hmm, I think correcting the individual interviewing you is a definite "no no" on my list, but hey, that's just me:lol:

I don't mean to go OT, but just thought I'd share my FS job application experiences.
I've applied to I believe 4 Future Shop's in the past 2 months (Oakville, Brampton, Brampton East, and Heartland Mississauga) when they were hiring through monster.ca. I only got an in-person interview at one, and it had to be the furthest one (Oakville), thought I aced it. Didn't get a call back and wasn't hired. Went to a job fair for Toys R' Us in Brampton this past week or so, and was hired on the spot for R-Zone. I guess Future Shop just didn't like me  Dressed up nicely too, dress pants with dress shirt and dress sweater? over it. Oh well, good luck in getting into Future Shop heimdal!

FS at the store level for hiring isn't the smoothest - not to mention they're hiring seasonal right now, too. There's a very high possibility your application was mis-placed or overlooked by the CSR responsible for doing call-backs - did you place a phone call to follow up?
Was her name Lisa? XD
You know, I hope no one from your job sees your avatar :p

I did a quick google and just started thumbing through these pages, they have a lot of info.

Nah I put it up 'cause it's the only thing with just scraggly lettering.

And they can see my avatar all they want, 'cause if they think I do and they check cameras they'll be paying some guy to watch cams for nothing XD they'll see me play Guitar Hero while my store is completely empty :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D.

Yes, I did place a call to follow-up and I got a simple "Unfortunately[...]Sorry".
Oh well, Toys R Us was a great alternative, it's just gonna be hectic tomorrow since our "Toy Book" officially starts tomorrow. I've received dozens of calls about the Wii Fit, and told them we've got 20+ stored and on hold for tomorrow, so best bet is to come in at opening (8:00am now) and see if you can snag one. Should be fun seeing the ppl line up outside

I got an email a few weeks ago asking me if I wanted to come in for an interview at Future Shop. Don't feel like quitting my current retail monkey job for another retail monkey job though. Also don't want to work under commission + warranty pressure, even if it is in gaming.

The warranty pressure isn't so big in Ent, well it is but we don't take it seriously, some people need it, some don't, we do get the odd success stories where people just get brand new machines and shit. But yeah I need a retail gaming job that doesn't entail of selling any sort of arbitrary promise that a machine will get fixed.

They asked me to come to the job fair yesterday (why do they call it that?), had a bunch of us sitting in a corner and just a few feet away are two ladies doing interviews.

I figured it would be pretty simple with like 15 people waiting, and my interview lasted about 5-10 minutes. I basically answered all the questions with the answers they'd want, like "10 people come into the section, how many should be purchasing something?" and I say "All 10 of them", it was pretty simple.

It's funny though, I showed up ten minutes after the job fair started and there were about 10 people sitting and waiting around, but I ended up waiting after about two people. The lady called me up and I was like "hey, cool! Haha suckers!"

Just got back from my interview.

I was introduced to the store manager and the Enterntainment manager. Like kathos said, it was just simple questions like availability, if I can work during the midnight launches like Gears of War next week and for extended hours leading up to Christmas.

There were also the usual customer service questions like, "Give me an example of when you had to deal with an upset customer."

I was looking around the office and I saw a board with names of divisions and new hires. Entertainment was looking pretty empty :)

I'm not out of the woods yet, they said they were gonna call me again in a day or so in order for me to come in for another interview. They also said something about a void cheque and orientation, which leads me to believe I'm getting closer.
