OTHER INFO

I consider deals confirmed when I receive the MAP on every other Thursday. The Map outlines promos and how the store is to be layed out and includes the barcodes for the deals. Also we get the new trade flyers that day as well with new trade values and deals.

Deals usually end on close of business on Monday and begin on open Tuesday (some special ones do start on Thursday usually around labor day, memorial day, etc.)

They also have coupons in magazines for great deals, so be sure to check EGM, GamePro, and several other magazines.

GameRush is starting to expand, so check the store locator every once in awhile to see if one is coming to an area near you.

All BlockBuster's should now accept trades, so the trade in prices for BB and GR should be similar, but normal BBs will not always have the deals that GameRush has.

GameRush accepts game trades without case and instructions and the games can be in poor condition depending on the employee.

You must have a BB account and sign a trade agreement to trade at GameRush.

Please be careful if you scam GameRush (by flipping games) they do have the abillity to ban you from all GameRush locations if they want to (and as I have done but that was only because I was tired of crap PS1...).

Release dates - Go by the shipping date. 9 times out of 10 it is not what the Blockbuster computer says. The computer date is when traditional stores can expect to receive their rental games.

Game Rush receives games typically on Tuesday and Wednesday of the games release. Only reason EB and Gamestop get them a day before is because they get special shipments or their dm picks the games up and brings back that evening (or they are near distribution centers).

Some games have street dates but this is few and far between (outrun 2, halo 2, star wars episode 3, doom 3 are it in the past 6 months).
I just think it’s interesting that there’s all this debate if it’s ethical to exploit the loop holes in Gamerush policies…. Whether it’s right or wrong etc…. but what about if the manager is guilty of flipping? I know my friend works at the La Sierra Gamerush, and was checking on Virgil’s account. He let some Brian guy do a trade AFTER his account was flagged. Virgil also flips, he just does with the different people’s accounts so nothing shows up on his name. i.e. a family friend or a customer. No wonder all the employees don’t like him…..
The GR manager at my store was "Asked to leave" for exactly this reason at my GR. The GR staff can not actually use the deals that the general public have access to (or rather they are severly limited). Which certainly seems unfair, but they do have inside information, so maybe it prevents fraud like specified above. Lets face it the moment you move to actually hide your actions is the line that should not need to be crossed.
Once you pick up the game, you'll more likely have an easier time returning it or swapping it right then for something else.
This is not unusual, very early on I was told this, so i changed my approach to receiving the game and returning it for credit.
This is not unusual, very early on I was told this, so i changed my approach to receiving the game and returning it for credit.
But, when you do this, don't they see that you only paid $30 for it and try to make you pay the difference?

So a little off topic, but GR have quite a few items for low dollar that trade high at Wherehouse / FYE / Coconuts. I bought Freestyle GC and Demolition Derby for 15$ and turned them into a nice 38$ at Wherehouse. I used that credit to buy items with rebates, Ape for PSP (20 after rebate), and a Atari console game for 15$ after rebate. So 15$ of GR credit was worth 60$ in retail at the Wherehouse.

Thank God for a good education so I can keep track of all this shit :)
But, when you do this, don't they see that you only paid $30 for it and try to make you pay the difference?
Nope, the receipt shows the full price.

I'll have to call a couple local Blockbusters here... but the first one I went to today didn't have any Gamerush related signage... and the clerk wasn't feeling very helpful, so I just left.

There have been a rash of questions about what can and can't be done at regular BB's vs. Gamerush locations. Of course, all of the deals are YMMV since some GR don't even do them (or they modify the deals a bit).

However, I, and many others, have verified that at least some regular BB's do the trade 3 get a used for $5 - and yes, you do get the credit for the games as well.

The question I have is if anyone has been able to do the trade 2 get a new/preorder for $29.99 deal at a regular BB? It seems someone implied this a few pages back. I had asked about this 2-3 months ago at my local BB and they said no, but maybe things have changed. I would LOVE to preorder at the local BB instead of GR. I would probably stick to major releases though as they are less inclined to get a wide variety of stock.

As for the Nintendo 50% off deal, I have not verified this personally, but Cory said it should work at a regular BB if the employees can figure it out.

I'd also like to know if anyone found out about any new preorders in the system. When I was in on Tuesday I asked about Mario Baseball and that wasn't listed. I'm assuming that nothing new is in then, as I figured this would be one to get added for sure in the next round.

Final topic - I haven't followed the Best Buy markdowns but I will look for some tomorrow. From memory (don't have trade receipts here), this is what the $5 Best Buy games get (edit: note some of these are $5 IF you use the coupon):

Metal Arms: $5
Beyond Good & Evil: $5
Midway 1: $7
Ribbit King: $1.50 (not worth it!)

Now it seems Astro Boy is the cream of the crop. I have yet to trade one of those so I'll pick one up for sure if I see it! Any other trade values from Best Buy cheapies?

I went to two GR to get jungle beat but the cashiers were doubtfull/unwilling to help w/ the 50% of code, they didn't even bother to look

Thanks, OP! Picked me up a copy of Assault for $25.00 yesterday evening. Can't wait to play some of those mediocre on-foot levels!
how much is pikmin 2, mario party 5, and paper mario new after the 50 percent off
From what I remember seeing yesterday evening, I believe the GR I went to had Paper Mario: TTYD for $25 and Pikmin 2 marked as $22.50 after the 50% off code.

I didn't see any copies of MP5, so I'm not sure about that one.

Here's a serious question...

Does anyone actually work the cashier stand at the Gamerush locations? I went to four locations yesterday, and there wasn't a GR employee at ANY of them, and the regular BB employees didn't know jack about the GR Maps and the 50% off sale.

No Zelda 2 for 7.50 =/

If you mean the 50% off Nintendo games... it's a barcode only Gamerush employees have.

If they can't find it / don't know what it is, you're not getting 50% off, which is what happened to me. Even though it was advertised at 50% off, none of them could find the barcode and told I'd have to "come back at a later date".

Too bad I live 20 minutes away and was just in the area.

I believe the barcode is 5610NS00014 or 5610NS00043...all they have to do is type that in immediately after scanning the game and it will take it off.

Why are they cutting out the bar scans on the back of these pre rented games??? Now I can't trade it in now that I'm finished with the game!
$7-8...Not really sure why its the 'cream of the crop'
Well, in that all the rest get $1.50 - $5, $7 or $8 is the "cream of the crop" in terms of getting $5 games at Best Buy and trading to Gamerush. Granted, it's not a great credit builder if that's what you are looking for - but it is good to use on the trade 2/$29.99 preorder deal. I'm just looking for 1 to diversify my trade-ins.

Went to a Best Buy in Springfield, VA today and they were out of Astro Boy. I'm going to try a few other DC area ones later today.

The MP5 at my GR is $25.

Anyone know what WrestelMania 21 gets for XBOX? I picked it up today with the trade 3 deal....not what I really wanted....I was hoping to get a PSP game, but only had Twisted Metal left....guess I waited too long.

We got in new psp movies this week to, TERMINATOR 2, and some others. Might be able to find a store that put theirs out (they are street in the bbv computer for the 7th) but some may have put theirs out on accident.

You can still trade in the game, if the barcode is missing. The CSR just has to type in the name of the game. I think the barcode can be missing from someone taking advantage of a rebate a la FYE or wherehouse.

Powerdrome XB stll gets 11.

Actually I was refused a trade last week because the barcode was missing, ironically I went back the following day without the cover and I could trade the game.

This seems odd, are you seeing it for a lot of games or is this just an isolated instance. Maybe you bought something that had been traded to GR that someone had used the barcode for a rebate. I've traded such games before that I had received rebates for.

I now create a copy of the barcode and retape it back in the position of the removed UPC, so that I can trade in the game. It's worked at least three times, I hate trading in things that are incomplete, it sucks for the next person.

i can guarantee it was number 2. i saw them selling file#2 for twenty something in the store used

Hey BillyKnoxville... nice to meet you man. You're the first CAG'er I've met in person. Good luck with everything.
Here's the problem with taking advantage of the deals.

Corporate is retarded plain and simple.

Reason why? Well here's what will happen.

They will see they lost tons and tons on this deal. They won't see it because of all the loopholes and what not. They'll think it was a bad promo and never do it again.

They won't realized that if they would have put the necessary controls in place, it would have truly been a great deal (which it is) and done great for game rush.

What they need to do is simple

Code the computer to not allow the sports titles and any titles that sell for less than $6.99.

Code the computer to only allow the same title to be traded twice within a two week period on the same accoutn at ALL STORES. (i mean really come on, I understand if maybe two brothers have the same gba game or something like that but do you really trade in two of the same titles on a regular bases every two weeks unless your flipping?)

Maybe a message that flashes if someone has already traded today at that store or ANY OTHER STORE, so that the employee can call.

I know they'll always be ways around that but that would be an excellent start.
Cory, I agree mostly with what you have to say, limiting the quantity of a game based upon store stock, or items traded by an individual at a specific store, seems to make sense, but GS and EB dont do that, they move excess quantities to the wherehouse and sell then online. After all they still make a nice profit on games they sell for 5$ (but paid only 1-2$ for). So GR is behind the curve on that one.

A lot of people also beleived that to open GR's widely, BB would need to build stock up in used titles to sell at those stores. In fact if I recall the stores in my area received their opening stock from the stores on the East Coast. So if GR expects to expand, maybe your excess inventory will eventually end up else where, so trade 3 get 1, satisfy's that requirement nicely, assuming they dont end up with only NBA Live 2002 to sell (fixed in latest round of deals by limiting sports titles to only 2004+ only).

You comment about flipping I think is a little broad. Buying a game from EB and selling it to GR is not flipping. It's the basic truth behind a free market economy, ie Buy Low, Sell High. Buying a game from GR1 and selling it to GR2 in a very short time frame is. I mention the timeframe piece because many of us have bought a game, hated it and traded it right back in. Now applying a wait period on trading in this way may have unpredictable consequences, such as forcing people to trade these games to EB and GS to maximize their trade in value, so perhaps the rule should be something like only used games are subject to a trade in delay.

This would be hard to enforce, but could be used as yardstick to establish who is or isnt flipping, and again I'm not aware of any such rules at EB or GS.

So maybe the bottom line is the exclusion list concept, exclude titles older than 1yr from 3 for 1 trade.

Anyway, Cory what do you think about "The Watcher" if he is from corporate you may want to temper your input as well. I think a lot of people have benefited from the information you have posted.

Just curious, but what if you trade in a disc only game that has no title on the disc, say twisted metal or something, claiming it as another game. I mean its pretty hard to know every single game by disc cover. You could also replace the barcode with a $30+ game as well. *This is illegal* Not worth the risk. I am surprised someone hasnt tried it yet. I wonder how many people would actually try this.

This is giving CheapAssGamer a very negative image, imo.

I remember when the site was just buying finding cheap deals, but lately it seems to focus alot on scams and finding all sorts of loopholes.
Anyone know how much Classic NES: Castlevania GBA or Burnout 3 gets in trade value? Thanks.
Castlevania Retro GBA goes for $2...traded mine in a few days ago.

The first thing that blockbuster needs to do is update their OS. Then they need to have a working network. I dont think they want to front the money. I know when I used to work at BB the system was not working very well since you could have a hold on your account from one store, preventing you from renting, but you could just reapply for another account to get around it. Plus, when opening a new account, I didnt know this at the time because I wasnt trained properly, you COULD have used fake info and no CC information. No collections agency if they cant track you down. Their system currently isnt linked to other stores in the area, but if they did, they could track how games are just being relocated between stores within a region.

Anyone who changes the barcode to a different game is a moron!!! Plain and simple. That is fraud and is illegal.

Swapping the disk for a different title would also be wrong, but the GR staff are supposed to eyeball the cd, so there should be a low chance of this working.

I have bought games in the past that turned out to be actually a demo rather than the complete game, so I took it back and GS gave me a real copy.

I agree anything that is clearly a scam is plain wrong, but knowing how a deal works is just called knowledge.

All I can say is "Welcome to the internet", where like minded people share ideas. It's not like anyone is planning a grand conspiracy, but rather sharing trade values.

You see the company is in business to make a profit, the consumer is looking for the cheapest price. We are game consumers. No one here (I hope), is walking into a BB, and stealing. We are horse trading with each other, this site just gives you a little more information to help you get the upper hand.

Last time I looked very few comments are of the ilk "I Hate BB". We may express the occasional frustration, but it's mainly because of the shifting sands beneath us. We figure out how to maximize our cash, they figure out how to reduce our cash.

It's a game, plain and simple.

One of the big things that I'd consider important is that they need a way to check inventory for other local stores. From a consumer standpoint, that's one of the biggest issues that I have with their current system.

If I want to look for a good deal, I'll go to Gamerush. If I have something specific that I really want right now, I'll head to EB, since it only takes them a few seconds to check stock for local stores. I'm guessing that I'm probably not alone in that sentiment, either.

I agree. There wasn't too much to that thread (note also that it was on the web site "ihateblockbuster", though it was in the "Blockbuster Lovers" forum :D). If the one guy who said this was "crap" (and linked to us) had read through all the posts here he would see that flat out scamming is frowned upon by the CAG community. He also just mentions the "bragging" forum like it is all about how people scammed stores, when it isn't that at all (well, OK, sometimes it is, but those posters usually get beaten down pretty quickly). He took a quick look, made a judgement, and posted it to a little-used board. Meh...

And stoned99 is right - this forum (particularly this thread) consists of a bunch of video game enthusiasts pooling info to get good deals. Sure we get a few posts about scamming, but if that was all there was to this thread I don't think Cory would be so involved. It might do BB some good to check out some of the ideas here (e.g., CONSISTENTLY applied banning, or more details/restrictions/exclusion lists on allowable trades instead of mass banning, etc). There is VERY little discussion of "ripping off" the store like they implied - about the only post I can think of in that vein was electroslag's claimed $12,000 (or whatever) profit he made off GR deals - and people let him have it for that.

Anyway - back to deals. I went into a regular BB in Virginia today and they had no signs up about ANY deals. They had about 3 new Nintendo games, so I didn't even bother asking about the 50% off sale. I'll try another tonight...

In regards to the trading in a game with no barcode thing...I was hassled today when trying to trade in a doom 3 collector's edition with no plastic sleeve (which has the barcode). This was a blockbuster employee and the only reason she knew about the sleeve was my friend had just traded in his sleeved copy of doom3. So anyway she said she couldn't take it without the sleeve. I told her I've traded in games without barcodes before and they just typed them into the computer. She still refused to take it. So then I went over to the shelf and grabbed a sleevless halo 2 collectors edition and showed it to her. She said "oh I guess we do take games without barcodes" and that was that.
