Gamestop has a used Wii - WONT sell it.

CAGiversary!
Forgive me if this is the wrong forum...please dont flame me- just move me.

Anyway, wife and i have been looking for a wii. I got one at launch, but was offering 450 for it-- so needless to say i sent it on its way. So we call a local GS, and they say they have one in store used. But they wont sell it. Not only does it ring up 9999.99 (no price default).... but they then said theyd have to WAIT 11 days to sell the f'n thing!

:( I was already to trade my PSP and a some games, stack my Edge 10% with the 10% Coupon and walk out with a wii.

DAMN GS TO HELL!!!!!!

All used ps3 and wii's need to be sent back to our homebase in Texas so they can reformat the save data on the HDD.

It was in an e-mail CORP. sent us a week before each respected system came out.

I'd say it was probably a crackhead... but GS requires a driver's license for cash trades and we all know crackheads don't drive.

we gotta send em in if they are traded in to erase everything. however, on the chance that it was sent from corporate to the store for selling, well just get all huffy and call the dm to get it. but most likely, its just waiting to get shipped to texas.

Um, you can actually format the Wii through the menus...

yeah they said NOTHING about sending it in. In fact i woulda bought that excuse over "we just have to hold it for 11 days".... 11 days tho? thats such a retarded number its ridiculous.

I'm almost certain they are holding it for an employee. The manager i guess will be in tomorrow morning, to "fix the price in the system."

bastards. i found it funny that someone would take it to GS than to craigslist or ebay HAHA.

I would assume like Pawn Stores they need to Hold on to if for a time before they can sell it becasue its the law as far as i know (so it gives time if it was stolen)

Listen boneheads,

It is impossible to sell at the store, that's why the POS prints $9,999.99 so the store would not sell it before it is getting to the home office first for inspection.

The decision to inspect it is a different story if it's neccessery or not.

That's pretty stupid if you ask me on Gamestop's part to have them ship the Wii to Texas just to erase the memory - which is something that can be done instore by any lackey behind the counter.

Then again Gamestop doesn't make sense to me a LOT of the time. Go figure.

youd think itd be easy... but once when i transfered to another store after the whole staff got fired... i found quite a bit of porn on psps (were supposed to send psp memory cards for the same reason as the wii) which would have been a very special treat for an 8 year old.

Thats what I was thinking as well.

I think if they were holding it for an employee they wouldnt even tell anyone they had it. Plus I am sure all the employees who wanted one "found" a way to get one on release day.

Ease up with the name calling, lurkerboy. It's a legitimate question for someone who doesn't work for GS.

There's a whole section about always opening with an insult.

I'm sure you could buy it if you gave them the price that prints out on the tags for used Wiis. Even an employee who liked their job would probably accept the $9,999.99 you offered.

Nobody cares what you think.
If they can't sell it, why even bother telling a customer you have it?
Because they're an honest person?

its not being dishonest to say its unavailable ... but to say 'oh yeah, we have one BUT we cant sell it, just seems sorta ridiculous.

And i do understand the pawn shop analogy, however it brings me back to why say you HAVE it only to say "oh but i cant sell it".... then further prefacing it with "i've had 7 people ask about it in the last 8 hours"... cmon thats just stupid.

We are required to do things like this including psp mem cards and xb360 Harddrives. The reason why we do this is to prevent honest and respectful customers from bringing the such items home and actually seeing something that is inappropriate that is saved on the harddrive. Then have the customer come back and complain and demand that they get the item free due to seeing such inappropriate things which caused them to be traumatized for life.

GS and EB has never made sense to me on anything they do. I mean come on instead of sending off memory cards , wii's , and hard drives somewhere so that you can reformat the damn thing , you would think common sense kicks in and say "we can do this here in the store , im a genius" , but on the other hand common sense isnt found at gamestop!!!

And when some lazy employee does a crappy job and someone sues gamestop over it? By having them transfered to a certain office they can get a guy that has been with the company for more then a month to actually do the work rather then trusting part time employee's who could care less.

They aren't going to get sued over it as long as they state that they aren't responsible for any content on the media.

It's not that hard of a job to do, you could easily give the task to a member of management.

But, this is the company that is too cheap to get game inserts and not open copies for display. This must be where that money goes.

See, an easy solution.

Have a manager do it every night before closing or every day, just a set time. It takes no time at all to reformat something. Have the disclaimer Gamestop is not responsible for the content that may be on there, but if content DOES show up, blame it on the manager and fire him. The fear of getting fired will make damn sure the manager reformats each and every drive... a part timer couldn't care less, but a manager sure does.

Instead, let's waste money shipping consoles back and forth to do a 5 minute job.

They will get sued quite easily even if they state they aren't responsible. Just saying you aren't responsible doesn't mean you arent liable.

I'll agree that I don't see the reason for not allowing managers to do it, only thing I can think of is that they just don't trust local store managers enough.

Yup you hit the Naill on the Head. But Since GS has so much money might as well make a new position while there at it....Lets call it. Data Formating Employee. Pay them 7.50 a hour and its a glorious life. But nope. Instead they have too Waste natual resources shipping it to Wherever it goes and back. I mean Seriously. Waste the money and develop a new position. Or like you said get the Managers to do it. OR have the crew do it then the Manager's test it out. It's not that hard to give people jobs and Cut down the time it takes for consoles to return back. But hey thats just my two cents.

An easier solution.

Before a customer wants to trade in a certain item they must wipe the harddrive clean of all content or else we can't take it in. I mean from what you guys are saying since it's so easy anyone can do it. But im pretty sure that customers won't like this poilicy too much.

Another "time saving" solution would be to have authorized employees clear them out when someone is trading in a Wii or PS3. Since they should be checking out the hardware anyway a little extra deletion could be in order.

The only problem is that if a customer changes his mind after the fact they're going to be highly pissed. And, having worked retail, you can ask a customer if it would be alright to format his system until you're both blue in the face but if, at the very end of the transaction, the guy changes his mind...well, you've got a fun earful waiting for you.

And yes, this could all be avoidable but...honestly, I only trust a handful of people I work with. If EB/GS gave the word that certain people are supposed to be formatting on their own time in-store I'd wager that we'd get two furious phone calls from the DM regarding not deleting (more likely, sadly) or pre-emptively deleting content.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Then again, this quip has always worked for me:

"The second any of management's decisions sounds feasible is the time you better get your ass out of here."

1. Some States have Pawn Shop rules (Yes, EB/GS IS classified as a Pawnshop). What does this mean? All hardware with a Serial # (Wii, 360, DS, etc) has to be held for a certain amount of time in-case that serial# is reported stolen. With 'new' consoles its happens frequently. When I was in the biz I had to give up 2 PS2's to the police due to this matter.

2. Since the more frequent "OMG! My son has porn on his PSP memory card he bought from EB" stories, some stores will send memory cards/consoles back to the warehouse to be wiped clean. $10 shipped or a $250,000 lawsuit and bass press? Hmm....hard decision there.

3. Since when does a store have to sell YOU anything. Last I checked they can keep that used Wii for 5 years if they feel like it. Stop thinking that every place is out to screw you. On the 21st, go wait outside a store and BUY one. That way if it ever breaks you won't be back here bitching that GS planted a self-destruction virus in your system just to sell you a warranty and subscription card.

Maybe I read it wrong but, You're gonna sell yours for profit and then complain if a store isnt selling theres? Maybe you should have realized they would be hard to get before you sold it.

Did you, you know, ask to put your name on it for when it comes back? Or did you immediately yell at the minimum wage employee, screaming obscenities in his ear, then slam the phone down?
Maybe I read it wrong but, You're gonna sell yours for profit and then complain if a store isnt selling theres? Maybe you should have realized they would be hard to get before you sold it.
You DID read it wrong. He picked one up at launch and someone offered him $450 for it. It wasn't his intention to sell it, but at that price, he couldn't resist.

Word.
bass press
You're right, that would suck:roll: .
In all seriousness though, GS/EB could do it REALLY easy.
Of course, who trusts minimum wage job workers these days? ;)

Didn't the original xbox have a hard drive? I don't remember them ever shipping those off to get wiped clean. When I bought mine used from Gamestop, it still had stuff on it. Why do they all of a sudden have to do it with this generation?

The Xbox could not display pictures and movies like the 360/PS3/PSP can. BIG difference there. All the kid could get tainted by is bad music.

Yes it may sound like an easy and quick thing to do right then and there. But also consider the fact that normally there are only two people on a shift,( at least the store I work at) and as you people know the trade ins can take a very long time and many people aren't very patient when they wait in line. And i generally work on the weekends so it is busy as hell with kids running around everywhere knocking things down, people asking if we have the wii 432543 times a day, and parents who "bought" a ps3 for their son but Gears of War won't work on it and wants to return it (ebay scalpers who got screwed)... But anyways so alot of time and effort goes to the customers that are in the store right then and there and making sure that they are happy and that they can get out of there asap. And for the people that said manager's should stay and reformat these things after the store closes is crazy. Unlike many jobs managers at Gamestop/EB don't get paid for overtime, even if they work over 50 hrs a week. They still get paid for 40 hours of work. Things may be different at many stores but im just trying to give you guys the low down haha, even though many of you that has worked retail probably already knows. :)

Kind of like getting sued and having to pay anything are two different things. They could easily restrict selling used content like that to people over 18 and there's not a damn thing anyone could do about it. You can try to sue someone all you want, actually being successful is two different things.

There you go...restrict the sale of anything capable of having porn on it to 18+.

If they restricted it to 18+ they wouldn't get very many sales for that used product and this would cut into profit margins and having piles of memory laying around the store.

They should have the disclaimer about content no matter what, someone could always be lazy at the warehouse and not reformat the memory and then there is a problem. Every time someone buy's a used item with memory on it they should also be warned that there may be content on it not suitable for those under 18.
If they restricted it to 18+ they wouldn't get very many sales for that used product and this would cut into profit margins and having piles of memory laying around the store.

Bullshit.

M-rated games. Not really affecting the sales that much, is it? Any little snot-nosed kid who can't buy a memory card or a M-rated game just drags their parents inside the store to buy it for them. It wouldn't affect the sales at all.

If you don't believe me, look at the top sellers for:

PS2 - 6 of 10 M-rated
Xbox - Top 4 M-rated
360 - 6 of 9 M-rated
All-time - 3 of 10 (no M-rating before 1994. Of the other 7, 3 debuted before 94, one was Mario, and the other three are Gran Turismo.)
