Gamestop = Shamstop?

Gamestop is such a sham - a used copy of Halo 2 goes for $45 but when I called in today they're only offering $18 on trade-in. They need to come somewhere in the middle on the pricing - sell the used for less or give a little more on trade-in but the disparity is usually atrocious. The only thing that might keep me going in there is my local store recently hired a hot young chick - cute and a gamer...wow. :)
hey we have to make up the money we give out for all those copies of primal and kessen you crazy kids get at toys r us, if we sold every single used game that we take in it would be different, but we dont
That's really the truth, not to mention the fact that at places like Gamestop, GameCrazy, and EB, it probably costs them money to sell new release games. All the profit is made in used games. Think about it.. a retail store makes maybe $5 off a new release game. Most of that $5 is eaten up in costs to staff the store, costs to ship it to individual stores, costs to ship it to the distribution for the stores, and also promotional materials that are put together in stores for the game.. thats why your game that gets $18 trade in sells for $45.
I really don't get why people bitch about trade-in prices...

If you don't like the price Gamestop gives you for it... just say "no".

Also, I think many of us overestimate what our games are worth, and forget that these places are trying to make money.

Yes, Halo 2 goes for $45 used... but let's say someone gets it as part of the B2G1 deal. Then, it's really only being sold for $30 or less.
I never understood that either. It isn't a sham or a rip-off. If people thought that, then hoarding $5 games to trade-in for $10 a piece should be a sham by that logic. Hell, I remember when it wasn't possible to trade games in to stores. You should be able to find someone who would pay at least $30 cash for Halo 2 anyway.

Meh. I don't shop anymore at Gamestop or EB Games stores just because I like opening up a brand-new game from shrinkwrap. I have no idea what you guys do, but every game I've ever bought from GS or EB, the game cases are grimey to the touch and sticky. Bleah.

wait.... can you be 16 and work at gamestop? or do you have to be a hottie?
I think Gamestop should make it an official requirement that you have to be a hottie. They could then become the hooters of video game stores.
but then they'd be dumber than the people over at eb.
I don't think it is humanly possible to be dumber than the people at eb.

dumbassgamer alert!

"Company X is evil because it sells used games for a higher price than it buys them for."

Welcome to capitalism, Comrade. This is a free marketplace; sellers and buyers are free to set their own price points. If they meet, a transaction happens, and everybody is (or should be) happy. Besides, I'm sure you have no idea how much it costs to run a business. Rent, inventory, and labor aren't free, you know.

There is one REAL EASY way to get around this sort of thing...actually there are two real easy ways. First of all, DON'T pay $50 for a game JUST because it came out and is "new". Play a demo, rent a copy of a game first. Sure, there are games that can start off fun, but end up getting hard/boring towards the end. These end up not being what you wanted. But, there is little reason (as in sense) to purchase a game for $50 when you have NO idea what the game is like.

Paying that much up front for a game only to find out it wasn't what you wanted/expected pretty much means you are going to be stuck having to take what you can get for it in trade-in, selling it on eBay/etc. Sure, every gaming mag and review website said the game was AWESOME and scored a 95+% rating. But, that does not mean YOU are necessarily going to like it. Save yourself a lot of time and money by playing demos and renting BEFORE you think about purchasing a full version of a game.

The second way to save yourself this hassle is to purchase games on the used market. Yep, that's right, a little patience (not "having" to play the game just because everyone else is) can save you LOTS of money. Is the singleplayer experience going to be any less fun just because you waited? Not if it's a good game.

It's simple math...$50 for a new game vs $50 for multiple used games. If you are a "true" CAG at heart, this should make perfect sense. Make your gaming dollar go as far as you can. Just because you have some store credit at a store doesn't mean you have to spend it RIGHT NOW. Wait until they have a buy two get one free or similar sale. That same $50 will go a LOT further.

Yes, I'm an OG when it comes to being a cheap@$$, and, a gamer. :}~~~

Some people just don't realize that you buy the game for $50 when its NEW..but your selling the game back USED. I dont know about you people but I sure as heck wouldn't pay $50 to you for a used game. Also charging $45 for a used game isn't my idea of cheaper either..might as well buy it new knowing its not going to be defective or have any scratches.

Also, god knows some of these people try to sell their old worthless games when the game looks like a 500lbs man sat on it or it was from WW2.
