FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the PowerUp Rewards card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your PowerUp Rewards card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

If I buy a used copy of a game that requires an online pass for multiplayer, will it come with an online pass?
If you purchase a used title published by either Sony or WB you get an online pass from GS on your receipt. That's also why the used copies are $55 instead of $48 when the MSRP is $60. No GS issued passes of games published by EA, THQ, etc. On those titles you're totally dependent on the previous owner not using the code.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

The Easiest way is if you are PuR, simply take the 10% bonus and find out the base from there, say you got $1.5 from it, $15 base & ETC. It's easier to simple move a decimal over.

ALSO, I would recommend people stop straight up buying AMZ Gift Card's when there are PLENTY of game's that get you even more credit on AMZ if you were to trade them in. A specific one would be the NBA 2k13 Dynasty Edition. TiV of $75 on amz, $59.99 new at GS. The employee at my gs was happy he was finally selling that thing (But be warned you will need a rather large box, I was suprised at the size)

The problem is taking the time to find all of these opportunities, I can never seem to catch anything like this unless someone specifically points it out.

Well it looks like it comes with a basketball so that makes sense about how large it is, only a $12 flip with tax but I suppose that's acceptable so might grab one tomorrow. $75 is good condition even so might open lock it in and play it for a few days since I've been hankering for some NBA lately.

That's nice and all but you have to research good flips and then wait for the credit to be deposited, if amazon doesn't just bone you over on the condition or send it back damaged. I'd rather not risk being in $60 for some collectors edition game of a sports title i would never want, because after amazon gets it I probably won't be able to return it to gamestop and get that credit back.

Reading is good too since I said on the last two pages that $3-9 games are better for the 3/5/7 and $10+ are better for the 50% (unless you have a game(s) that are close to $10 and need to get to 7).

Edit: And just so you know some of your games may be worth nothing like RB2. Think thats worth like $0.50.

Heard from a friend that GameStop may be doing a 50% bonus on all trade-ins on Monday.  I'm trying to find confirmation of this.  Have any of you heard this?

Second time I've seen this question, but no confirmation.
Went to other Gamestop's from where I got the original "rumor" and they didn't say anything, but again, I didn't ask. Alas, my trades:

With bonuses, $95.50--somewhere around $5 more now than if I had waited for the rumored 50% bonus. However, just trading in the two Mario games would be much wiser on the 50% bonus deal--the cheap games are what made it worthwhile to do it this way. I already had about $100 in GS credit so I bought $200 worth of Amazon cards to put toward the PS4 preorder.

 
The GameStop I went to refused to do the trade any 3 games and get $10 extra in-store credit, trade any 5 for a $20 extra or 7 or more for $35 extra. I saw that some other people had this experience as well. What's going on with this and is there anyone I can contact to let corporate know, besides the contact on the website and Twitter? Any employees know what's up?
 
So I bought some used games not too long ago, and the person wrote the word "Games" on them in red sharpie at the top. I've managed to fade them out, but you still see it was written on. Anyone know a way to remove these, or would GameStop possibly take them and just hit me with a refurb fee?

Was the writing on the disk or on the case? if it was on the latter, if you're concerned, just turn in the disks. You should get full value. If they're on the disks, I have heard some have been able to trade them in but I haven't heard of anyone having issues lately about writing on the disks.

 
On the disc unfortunately. Most of them are low value, so they don't matter much, but I'm hoping to get rid of black ops 2, halo 4, forza 4......all of which have this. Homedepot sells some graffiti removed that I thought about giving a try lol

Get a dry erase marker, trace over the sharpie marks, then wipe. Then repeat the process until it's all gone. DO NOT USE MAGIC ERASER.

But my Gamestop guys don't have any issues with writing on the discs.

Info to pass along.

This is a warning to all of those people who don't preorder games thinking they can get everything they want whenever. On Project X Zone & SMT IV on 3DS, if you don't preorder or don't buy within the first week, you probably won't get the SE goodies in those games.

I'll explain. We received our main supply of Project X Zone early in the week (12 copies for 3 preorders) and then in a later shipment this week we received a 13th copy but it was just the game, none of the SE goodies.

Much like the LE of Metro Last Light these SE 3DS games will be first print only and if you wait to get them, don't come on CAG and bitch about how you didn't get the SE goodies. Xenoblade Chronicles says hello (those games rotted on our shelves for a year and now everyone wants them ...)

Huh. I just preordered Project X-Zone today. The cashier didn't say anything about not having a copy with bonuses and I even specifically mentioned them, so I'll probably be safe.

Overall with this promo I've racked up $425 in credit and paid in full for Last of Us and Saints Row IV. Loving this feeling of a trimmed down backlog.

Not sure if this was cashier error or just a lucky time to strike but I ended up with $218 in store credit tonight from just 5 games and a controller. My traded list was as follows : Last of Us ($45.50), Bioshock Infinite ($37.80), Black Ops 2 ($50.96), Orange Box ($30.52), 3D Dot Heroes ($7.79) & a Dual Shock 3 ($45.89). Again, the possibility of error exists but with 2 employes simultaneously going over the transaction, there exists the possibility this is legit ($20 bonus for 5+ traded games, 10% bonus for Edge card & 30% bonus with a $5 reserervation toward GTA V. Hopefully this will help a fellow CAG out in getting some good trade value.

Not sure if this was cashier error or just a lucky time to strike but I ended up with $218 in store credit tonight from just 5 games and a controller. My traded list was as follows : Last of Us ($45.50), Bioshock Infinite ($37.80), Black Ops 2 ($50.96), Orange Box ($30.52), 3D Dot Heroes ($7.79) & a Dual Shock 3 ($45.89). Again, the possibility of error exists but with 2 employes simultaneously going over the transaction, there exists the possibility this is legit ($20 bonus for 5+ traded games, 10% bonus for Edge card & 30% bonus with a $5 reserervation toward GTA V. Hopefully this will help a fellow CAG out in getting some good trade value.
take a pic of the receipt and post it.

What does it matter? It was human error regardless. A pic is pointless and aroundthefur got a lucky break.

 
ALL PS3 GAMES I traded today:

Black Ops 2 - $20

The Orange Box -  $15

GTA IV - $6

Batman: Arkham City - $5

Fight Night Round 4 - $1.50

Borderlands - $3

+$20 extra from their trade in promotion

I got a total of $70.95

Every once in a blue moon, somebody will get a double promo stack due to an error on the employee and post it here. 99% of the time, this will not be able to be reproduced. I would consider yourself lucky and simply move on - it probably won't happen again. It was kind of like that one time I used a $50 off coupon and stacked it with another coupon (10% off an Iphone in April) and the system never voided out the $50 coupon but deducted the $50; I was able to reuse the coupon the next day on a $50 giftcard. 

 
The new promo that begins on Monday is

Get an extra $3.00 for EVERY game you trade in when you trade 3 or more games. ($2.00 minimum to qualify)

The 3/5/7 ends close of business Sunday.

No word on any 50% trade promo other then getting one if you renew your PUR pro card.

The 30% trade bonus is extended, with new titles/items added and some older ones removed, but I wasn't able to see what is on the list.

Not as good as the previous deal but it makes a larger number of games eligible if the minimum is $2.

Glad I was able to take advantage of that 3/5/7.

 
Trading in tomorrow, with the search sucking so bad (cant look at search topic post by post anymore??) shouldnt get any stinkeyes about using my new credit on Kindle cards right?

EDIT: maybe not so easy peasy...dang stupid search!

Yes! Sure hope this is true! I'll be able to get rid of a bunch of junk that didn't meet the 3/5/7 promo!
