I plan on getting a few of these games for the wife and kids, so it's my own little perfect storm.

Trade 2 wii games with tiv of $3.01 or more, get $30 off select titles including Wii Fit, Wii Music, RRR Tv party, Skate it, Fitness coach, Cooking Mama world kitchen, r u smarter..., cheer squad, DDR hot party2, Jillian Micheals, Skate City Heroes.
You also get a magazine to some womans magazines with purchase of any of these titles.

Trade two ds games more than $2.01 get $20 off most Imagine ... Games, My language games, a few more learning and educational games.

Way better than the trade 3 get $10 if you want some of these games.
I'll be looking for some cheap wii games left at BB since the wife and daughters want some new stuff to use with the wii balance board.

The manager at the store had the sign up but had no idea what the big "Save $30/Save $20" applied towards. He had to get out the promo book to see.

Added by Io - Since I was trying to figure out whether any of these games are good or not, I looked up reviews on a lot of them. That would probably be useful info here so, with the better ones (70 average or better - I rounded up the 69 ones) bolded:

:ds:
Brain Age and Brain Age 2 - everyone knows these, no need for reviews ;)
Actually no. Since the deal was nerfed, you will get Skate City Heroes and a gift receipt, but instead of an additional $10 credit on your card, you will only get an additional $1 (assuming you don't have to pay tax in your state.)
Actually, no. After the deal was nerfed, I got Skate City Heroes and around $9.30 (damn sales tax) back on my Edge card. Pre-nerf, I would have gotten an extra $10 credit (2 Wii games, each $5 TIV, plus $30 credit).

Skate City Heroes is $19.99.

I don't know if it really matters if you go with SCH or one of the $29.99 Wii games if you're just going to return it.

Can you explain this whole nerfed business? I want to trade 2 Wii games in and maximize my total value for returning the game I pick up. Would it be better to get Skate City Heroes or one of the $29.99 games? Since they are giving you $30 for the games and I get SCH for $20 then what happens to the $10 difference? Do I lose it? If so then I should get one of the $30 games for returning it later.

Sorry if this was already explained. I'm reading through all these posts so hopefully I'll find my answer. Thanks in advance.

Found my answer finally on page 6. So now they are bumping up the value of your trade ins to a flat $15 plus edge (no longer adding the extra TIV). So does anyone know if I get Skate City Heroes for $20 do I still get the extra $10 trade in bonus or do I lose it and my games adjusted to $10 trade in value?

It doesn't really matter which game you pick, if you pick SCHeroes the 10 difference will be used as credit and can be put on your edge card.

So anyone have DDR: Hottest Party 2 and like it? I always wanted a DDR game, and its hard to not give it to my girlfriend... so I can play it... yet its 40GS+10BBV credit with the expectation of the value to drop...
I've traveled pretty far and wide in MD and I've never not been charged tax. Makes me a sad panda. My profit margin would be significantly improved if I were not charged tax.
Maybe io visited Maryland's little neighbor Delaware, where there is no sales tax.

The way if worked for me yesterday, I got an extra $9.XX back on my Edge card. $30 for 2 Wii games - ($19.99 + tax) = credit.

Since this was argued, I just want to confirm that this is indeed correct. I got this after the deal was nerfed. Believe it or not (well, actually just believe it), the deal was actually better. Before the nerfing, you got the TIVs of the games you traded in on top of this already good deal.

i returned one game today, and they were talking amongst themselves how i was trying to cash out. they were surprised when i said all i wanted was my credit back. i returned a PS3 guitar, PS2 component cables, and a GC wireless controller. I returned a My Fitness Coach from this deal. The guy asked, you bought 2 Legendary's? Cuz on my 3 separate receipts, I had 2 different Legendary's. I had nothing to hide; so I told him yeah, I trade them into Blockbuster. They give me $35 for them. He said, "Oh, that's smart." Didn't see anything else, but before the 30 day return policy is up, I'm returning a DS Guinness World Records, a Wii Music, and 5 Skate City Heroes. I am still gonna trade in for My Fitness Coach's and Are You Smarter..., so that I can return 3 games at once, w/o throwing up too many flags.

just wanted to say i live in GA and have never been charged tax on buying anything with full amount of credit..tho when i went to TN with the g/f..i got charged tax in a mall there...so guess it's YMMV according to state? and TN sales tax is NOT FUN...9.25% o_O

Definitely not - just a faulty memory I'm sure ;).

I'll give you a real-world example of the difference pre and post-nerf. I had Nintendogs and Ninja Gaiden DS with me the other day when I got the deal (pre-nerfing). Because they didn't have the game I actually wanted to keep (Guinness for DS) I held on to them hoping to do the trade the next day at another store. I did trade two other games for the Cooking game though.

The base values are $9 and $7. So a straight-up no promo trade would net $17.60, no strings attached.

Had I traded those two in, pre-nerf, I would have gotten $9.90 + $7.70 + $10 added to each for a total of $37.60. I'd be required to buy a $19.99 or $29.99 DS game of course.

Post-nerf, I would only get the Edge card boost on top of the flat $10 each - so the total would have only been $21.60 AND I'd still have to buy the stupid DS game. That is not much of an improvement over the base values and you have to buy the overpriced game (and all the ones in the promo are things I'd normally wait for a price drop or get cheap used during a B2G1 sale). Yeah, so maybe you can return it but that is a lot of hassle for $4 extra.

However, GS also currently has a coupon for $5 extra per Wii or DS game trade. Funny how those cover the two systems the "$20/$30 off" purchase deal is for. So tonight I traded them with that coupon and got $27.60 for the pair, also with NO strings attached!

So there's a case where the so-called "$20 off" a DS game deal is actually giving you less credit than just using their normal weekly coupon - AND sticking you with a less-than-stellar game to take home and deal with one way or another. It's a win-win for GS ;). Hell, even if you wanted to buy one of these games by chance at the same time you'd be better off NOT using their own promo for it!

Hopefully CAGs are savvy enough to use the coupon though. So, for the DS deal anyway, it is really only worth using the "$20 off" deal if you can find games that trade just over the minimum of $2. Flash Focus is a good one at $2.50. I have one of these but nothing to go with it at the moment. If I can't find anything in the next few days at Blockbuster I'll just use the $5 coupon on that as well (both the "$20 off" deal and the coupon have a > $2 minimum).

So even if you want to go through the hassle of a return of the purchased game, it is STILL better not to use the promo if the games trade for more than $4. At $5 the two promos are exactly the same except that the coupon one doesn't require the purchase/return mess. Of course if you really want the games they are offering, then anything less than $5 TIV (but greater than $2!) works out nicely.

On the Wii side there is a slightly better range for the purchase deal. Anything over $3, and less than $10 gets you more than the coupon will. So in that case some $5 TIV games are pretty good to use and much easier to find than $3 DS games, for example. Still, you have the return hassle if you don't want the actual games from the deal.

At $5 each, for example, the coupon gets you $21, while the "$30 off" promo gets you $31. It is hardly "$30 off" as advertized though, since you are giving them two games they will try to sell for $17.99 each most likely ;).

io, I'm glad you're right there with me in the thought that the nefing of this promo was completely a douche move by GS. When it first happened and I was engaged in discussions of what a crock the "save $30" ad was, some defended it, saying "well, most thought that's what it was anyway".

I have no doubt in my mind that GS's original plan was to do the promo as it began, but realized a day in that it was too costly for the company and pulled a nice "bait & switch" on us. Putting out the $5 Trade In coupon just highlights how horrible of a deal you're getting. The way it is now feels very "what's the point?" It just doesn't seem like this is truly the way it was supposed to work.

fuck this. I went there and they brought the TOTAL of my 2 games to $30.
That's NOT how this is advertised.

I said to the FAT VIRGIN, "What if I traded in 2 copies of Mario Kart Wii? The TIV is $20, that'd make $40..You're saying I WOULDN'T get a promotion for it WHEN there's NO exclusions?!" He's like "YUP!"

GTFO.

Maybe we could actually make some calls to corporate about this? I mean...in the end, they can still do whatever they want, but maybe a few threats of false advertising, on the grounds that we're not saving $30 when we give them two games with TIV close to that in the first place, would make them flinch. At the very least, personally, I'd love an explanation.

It still baffles me that for all the planning and marketing, this promo felt obscenely half-assed both pre and post-nerfing. I still say the wording should have been that by trading in two games, they were lowering the price of these selected games. That way, it doesn't look like they're giving us $19.50 for Alien Syndrome, to turn around and sell it for $17.99.

If this thing had been approached with the intention of moving some games that had been underperforming in sales (Wii Fit not withstanding), it would have made a hell of a lot more sense. In reality, the deal probably should have been the TIV + $20 off, so at least that would allow room for people to trade in games like Mario Kart without being completely screwed over. The constant should be the bonus given...not the freaking total. Ahh, it's pathetic how badly they botched this. Makes you wonder who's running this billion dollar gaming company.

EDIT - Yeah, the more I think about it, the TIV + $20 would have been fair to everyone. In lilboo's example, that would net you $40 for 2 MKWs, $4 EDGE bonus, and a $20 promo bonus, for a grand total of $64. That would be a perfect total for someone to put toward DDR HP2 or Wii Fit. Are you listening Gamestop??? Where's my corporate job bitch? :)

The promotion says "SAVE $30 When you trade in 2 Wii game" (towards certain games.)
It does NOT say "Get $30 IN credit!"

Really hate when they half ass stuff like this.

I ended up getting Skate heroes (post-nerf).. So i have aquick question.... do i need a gift receipt or can I just use the original receipt to return it at a different gamestop? I have been reading the posts and not gotten a concrete answer...

thanks

thanks
I think it depends on how you plan to present it to the GS worker.

Got it as a gift and don't want it? Gift receipt.

Got it as a present for someone and found out someone else already bought them the same thing? Original receipt.

Both times I did it, I used excuse #2. I felt it made a return the following day (or same day) easier to accept.

One reason that they may not be applying the discount to the game purchase and instead adding it to the trade-ins is that they often are not allowed to sell certain games at too much of a discount. Nintendo probably wouldn't let them sell something like Wii Fit straight up with $30 off - so they have to do some trade-in trickery to make it work. They still screwed it up though ;). If they could reduce the games by $20 or $30 it would solve all their problems - the promo is as it says it is, AND it would put a halt to most of the returns. There must be a reason they can't/won't do this.

good call with excuse 2... i was gonna say "my wii balance board broke and now this game is useless" lol

Traded in Pirates of the Caribbean and Super Swing Golf for Are you Smarter. Got the gift receipt, now to return it. Rinse and repeat 3 more times and I am set.

That's not so bad. My hometown in LA has a sales tax that is at 10.00%, probably one of the higher ones in the state. Most of the other cities are 9.0% and up.

The good thing though is that here I don't get charged tax when buying on credit at GS. And at BBV, I get charged tax, but when I trade games there, they add tax into the credit amount.
Do the games have to be complete for this deal? Anyone know the value of Manhunt 2 (Wii)?
I doubt it, but they might charge you reburb fees. Still that shouldn't affect the TIV of the game since the refurb fees are charged after the trade promos have been calculated.
Do the games have to be complete for this deal? Anyone know the value of Manhunt 2 (Wii)?
I can attest to turning in 2 games sans artwork (although they did have manuals) towards the deal.

No they don't, but it might depend on location/manager.

I traded in 4 games that I bought from Hollywood Video from a B1G1 for $14.99. I traded in only the games with no cases or manuals, but I did get dinged for $4 in refurb fees as the discs were pretty badly scratched. Still was able to almost double my investment ($32.30 = $56 store credit)

HWV has B1G1 promos too? I've only heard of B2G1s at HWV/GC...

Sort of disappeared from the front few pages, is this deal still running? Went in today and grabbed one of the games in the section and got no promo and the employee had no idea there was a promo for it. Is the deal automatic with Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party? Will it come up if the employee does the trade then scans my edge card and then scans the game?
Will it come up if the employee does the trade then scans my edge card and then scans the game?
Yes.

Today was the first day I ever saw the actual flyer in store. The other 3 stores I've been to have the small shelf tags with the "$20 off" or "$30 off" markings but no specifics about which games qualify. But the store with the flyer had almost nothing in stock that wasn't gutted. So I went to one of the ones where they were clueless about it and had a newbie GS clerk to boot (she had never even scanned a coupon before ;)). The deal went through just fine on a Skate City Heroes - the values don't get boosted till the very end. Just make sure they do the trades and scan the new game for purchase on the same transaction (as you describe above).

I wish I'd made the decision to do this when the deal was better, but after hearing from a friend who really likes the game - yes, you read that right - I'm now going to see if I can get WiiFit with this deal. I'd like to give the game a try. Depends on if I can find two low value Wii games at BBV and, of course, a WiiFit in stock. Otherwise I'll just trade some Wii games in with the +$5 coupon.

Perhaps I should send a bill for the difference in what I'll have to pay compared to how the deal was, to those of you doing all this uber buying and returning? You could each pitch in a bit and cover it easily. ;^)

WiiFit is probably worth getting just for the balance board, its a nifty gadget for the wii.

Traded in Elebits and Battle of the Bands, got Skate City Heroes. Returned it today, (no problems) for Super Princess Peach DS and $3.00 left in credit.

I'm hoping to do this toward a WiiFit (to keep), but the GS near me closed before I could get there. Actually I was able to stick my head in and ask if they had any in stock, which they didn't, so it was moot. There's another I can try tonight, but I'll call ahead. I suppose there isn't much hope, though. Do we know how long this promotion runs? I'm wondering if it's worth keeping 2 of my Wii trade fodder around in the hope of some WiiFits arriving while this promotion is still in effect, as opposed to trading them in by Thursday with the +$5 coupon.

I'm thinking along the same lines, I have 2 wii games from the Blockbuster B1g1 left and i think I'll hold out for a wii fit. Need to cash out on something since Wii sports have dried up around here. If not I was thinking of giving Skate it! a shot.

Just curious, but when you returned SCH, did you have a gift receipt, or just your original?

returned a copy of are you smarter than a 5th grader with a gift receipt and got cash back. i now have 3 more games to return and ill finally be done with this promo.

I've returned 2 games with original receipts on the same day of purchase from one Gamestop to another right around the corner. I got a bit emboldened and tried to immediately return a game I just bought but they said I'd lose the trade in bonus. I'll return it elsewhere later.

Wow - not sure you you swung that. I've done one return from this sale and they looked up the original purchase method (Edge card credit) and said it had to be a gift card (which is taxable not that it matters to me).

The reason I ask is because I decided to bite on the RRR TV Party for $40 + free RRR1 that Amazon had yesterday. I already picked up RRR TV Party from this promo, but I'd like to return my Amazon copy to GS when it gets here. I actually asked for a gift receipt when I bought it from GS, and the guy said "Oh yeah, sure." and then proceeded to not ring me up with one. Not that it really mattered because the game was gutted anyway (I still can't comprehend how selling opened games as new is even legal, considering everybody in that store could have tried the game out while it's sitting in their drawer).

I'm just trying to gauge how much of a stretch it would be to return a sealed game (they'd probably look at it like "what the hell is this clear wrapping???") with my original receipt that shows I used a trade in promo to acquire it in the first place. Could I exchange it for another $50 game? Or are they going to try to nerf me on it? It would have been nice if he had just given me a gift receipt like I asked for, but that just would have been TOO easy.

i probably go to this gs once a week and got pretty friendly with one of the workers. he informed me during the b2g1 they had during the holidays that gift receipts don't state the original form of payment so you have the option of cash or credit. i didn't even ask for cash this time, but he knew what i was up to so he went ahead and gave me cash. even advised that i make up a name and phone number so the promo and returns are not tied to me.

That's interesting. When I returned 2 games from this promo last week with a gift receipt, the employee was somehow able to tell that I had purchased the game with credit. I don't think he knew that I used the promo to get the 2 games, but he at least knew that the games had been purchased with credit.

I've got another question somewhat related to this promo. In my quest to find a Wii Fit, I've noticed that I can't get any employee to respond to the question "Do you have any Wii Fits in stock?" with an answer longer than "No". Are they not allowed to tell you when trucks come in any more? They used to tell me when their next shipment was coming in when I'd be looking for hard to find stuff. Now, even if I ask when they'll get more, they just say "I really have no idea". Shouldn't Nintendo be shipping these on a somewhat regular basis? Is this some new kind of "loss prevention" policy? I'm used to employees being clueless, but this just feels off.

Now, even if I ask when they'll get more, they just say "I really have no idea". Shouldn't Nintendo be shipping these on a somewhat regular basis? Is this some new kind of "loss prevention" policy? I'm used to employees being clueless, but this just feels off.
This is just based on my opinion of what I've seen. They get shipments of stuff every day, through UPS, possibly FedEX. The trucks come in at a certain time every day, usually mid-day at my store. I don't think they know what is on the shipment until they open it up. I used to hear them say call in every afternoon to see what was on their shipment. I'd recommend doing that. I don't think Nintendo has a regular shipping schedule. The Nintendo rep in my area actually got a call from a GS employee while I was there, telling him that they got them in, and the employee would hold it for the rep. If there are any stores you are in good with, leave your name and number, and they might call you when it comes in.

I went ahead and traded in 2 sets of games toward this deal...When I tried to get SCH, the employee rang it up, but the promo did not work. He told me it had been removed from the deal due to the price being lower than $30. Anyone else experience this? Not really a big deal since I plan to just return the games anyway.

Are you sure the promo doesn't apply to SCH? I think either io or FoS mentioned that if you try to get more than one game using this promo, you have to do the transactions separately because the system won't apply the promo to 2 games or more if they are on the same transaction. If you had both your transactions done separately, then I guess SCH really isn't part of the promo anymore.

I thought about doing this but the return stuff is too much hassle, and the $5 coupon is almost the same.

Yeah, it's key to do it seperately. I had a knowledgeable employee try to do three sets of games. The first set yielded the appropriate bump up to 15.00 while the other two sets got turned into the "Trade three and get a 10 dollar bonus" promo.

I am not sure, I never assume something to be 100% true when it comes to things like this unless it has been confirmed by others or on more than 1 occasion at a different location. I only traded in 2 games, thus using the promo only once, so that can't be it. The manager was the one helping me, but that doesn't mean he is necessarily right. Basically, my post was looking for confirmation...

Not true, If you are doing lower value games ($4-$5). I would have gotten $10 less per transaction had I used the +$5 coupon. However, I do agree that it can be a hassle to do the returns if you do not have a plethora of GS in close proximity to one another. This deal was definitely worth it on the first day or so, when they were giving you $15 on top of the normal TIV + edge.
