The awesome GameTap anniversary deal from last year is back. For a limited time, if you sign up for a year of GameTap, you will pay the equivalent of less than $5/month. This is 50% off the normal price of GameTap. Once subscribed, you will be locked in at this price (possibly forever).

GameTap offers unlimited play of over 1,000 new and old games (and growing every week) across multiple platforms. Not to mention the TV show episodes and video features released each week. Don't forget: challenge play on select games, leaderboards, online message boards, parental controls and more. This IS the best deal in gaming.

GameTap even gets day and date releases with certain games when they release in store. Some recent examples of this include Clive Barker's Jericho and Conflict: Denied Ops.

Please note that some pictures and descriptions above are slightly outdated/inaccurate, as GameTap has recently released a new version of the GameTap Player. TV shows are now on the website, not in the client.

Darn, there are some good games I want to play pulling out (although thankfully most of it is educational stuff). A mod on there explained that all of these games have their own licensing agreements with different start and end dates, so stuff like this may have to happen occasionally.

Oh well, doesn't make me want this any less.

Awww, bye-bye Sim Tower; that was my guilty pleasure.

Now they should release a lot of games soon, gotta keep that count at 1000+ :)

That is to bad. It sounds like they know the end date license so they should just post those dates on the games. This way people won't start a game that they don't have time to finish

Hmmm or do people get to keep the games and they just won't be allowed to download it again?

After 12/11, no gametap users will be able to play these games, even if they already have it downloaded on their computer.

I just realized they've got Pirates in addition to Civ 4. Awesome, I've been wanting to play that since it came out.

This sucks, as many of the best edutainment titles are getting the axe. In fact I would say that they will be going from adequate-good to hardly worth it if you want it for the edutainment titles (which helps justify the monthly expense to those of us with families). Still worth it, but I'll never think the same way about it again.

I hope these aren't being pulled to start "Gametap-like" ventures elsewhere. I won't be paying more than I already do per month for rent-to-play.

^ You pay a monthly fee and you can download as many of the games as you want to play. Instead of Steam, where you pay per game, with GameTap you pay one price for access to all of the games. However, if you unsubscribe you will lose access to the games you have downloaded.

I was going to sign up for gold yesterday, but found out that my school seems to be blocking access to Gametap just within the last month. That REALLY stinks because this is such a great deal. I wish someone offered cheap unlimited wireless internet access. All I'd really need is the ability to log in to Gametap-don't REALLY even need broadband :(

^ Highschool or college dorm? If college, why would they be blocking GameTap?

Oh, and you DO need broadband for GameTap. I believe if you are using dial-up it will detect that and block access. And even if you could get in (which I doubt you could), GameTap wouldn't be very useable without a decent connection.

I have no idea. They're not real militant here about blocking stuff as far as I know, so I really don't know. It could even be an accident. Or maybe tons of people were downloading multi gigabyte games all the time? But I don't think it would be any worse than Steam, or downloading demos from websites, or whatever else.
CRAP! I just double checked and Steam doesn't connect anymore either!. I know tons of people play World of Warcraft all the time, but I wonder if that's been blocked now too?

This completely SUCKS.

EDIT: Okay, what the HECK is going on now? I relaunched Steam and after two attempts updated itself and DOES appear to be working. I have no clue what's going on.

Oh, and you DO need broadband for GameTap. I believe if you are using dial-up it will detect that and block access. And even if you could get in (which I doubt you could), GameTap wouldn't be very useable without a decent connection.

Why on Earth would they explicitly BLOCK it? How could they even tell (unless they do a bandwidth test)?

My wacky idea is I could download the games over another connection, and then just use some kind of other connection to authenticate to Gametap so I could play. Hopefully soon we'll start seeing truly unlimited wireless broadband for competitive prices from the cell phone providers (or whoever). I was thinking with something like that I wouldn't need THAT fast...just good enough to authenticate with Gametap :D

Heck, maybe it's just some random part of the connection between here and Gametap that's gone bad. I just had trouble getting to their website, and then refreshed and it worked.

^ The problem with dial-up is that GameTap currently has "progressive downloading". So even if you download a game, it does not always download all of it (just enough to start playing). It will continue to download in the background as you are playing the game. If you don't have a fast enough connection, there is the chance you will catch up to the level or area that is not downloaded yet, and the game will crash, freeze, or stutter. Of course this issue only effects some of the larger and/or newer games.

Though it should be known that GameTap is aware of these problems and I'm guessing they are probably working to fix this in future releases of the client, seeing as how many people have complained about it (but don't hold me to it). [A quick fix that others have discovered is to leave the game running at the title screen overnight.]

Even if they fix it, though, please know that you need to be connected to the Internet the entire time while using GameTap and playing games. Dial-up, in my opinion, just doesn't cut it for an online on-demand gaming service.

Weird, I had never run into that progressive download thing. Well, that pretty much wrecks my ability to use Gametap even if it was still working. Only chance for it is if someone ever offers a CHEAP (ish) form of wireless broadband I could get here :(

If nothing else, I'm really glad I checked it by launching the client BEFORE I payed the $60. I never would have imagined it wouldn't work for me anymore (just used it as recently as a few weeks ago).
This deal (1 year for $60) is still going on. It is unknown if it will end on December 31.
For what it's worth, a CS rep was quite positive that this would last until some point after the holidays when i asked him about 10 days ago, though he didn't have any word about a specific end date.

Good, so it sounds like we've got until at least December 31. That'll work okay for me. I still haven't done this since now I won't need it until January, and when I was going to sign up for it a few weeks ago it was being blocked (but now it's been unblocked, that was probably a mistake).

Guess I'll sign up for it on the 31st during vacation.
That's AWESOME news; never got a chance to see what the fuss was all about... and it will help me decide wether or not to get the Wii sequel :)
Unfortunately it sounds like the sequel was rushed, and also adds goofy junk the way Sonic did.

There's a large contingent of people who think NiGHTS was the much better game out of NiGHTS/Mario 64/Crash Bandicoot. IMO much more fun, much better gameplay, much fresher feeling.

Wish I knew for sure. I should probably just sign up if it's still up today (won't really use it until next week sometime).
I wouldnt want to play nights without the 3d nights controller.
Gametap allows the use of most controllers though. A Xbox 360 controller will probably work just as well. And you can use a PS2 style controller if you like that style better. As long as you have an analog stick on your controller, it should work fine.

Yeah, I can't see why it would really *need* the original controller. It was definitely better than the Wii's classic controller for it, but I'd think the 360 pad would work fine (plus the Wii's NiGHTs game is just plain terrible anyway...)

Great news! GameTap has renewed their contract with Humongous. 23 previously removed edutainment titles have come back to the service, including Freddi Fish, Putt Putt, Spy Fox, Pajama Sam, and Moonbase Commander.

Here's the full list.

The deal is still on, old humongous games are back, and interesting games on the service such as Sam & Max and Uplink, I had to bite. Thanks OP.

Oh god, I remember Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo when supervising my baby brother.

Dammit, it's coming back...

Welcome to the zoo zoo zoo!
See the kangaroos roos roos!
And the tigers too too too!
Welcome to the zoozoozoo!

I just signed up (finally) this past Wednsday. This deal is just crazy good. I was looking through the PC game selection and it's got way, way, way more stuff than I even realized when I signed up. I think you could legitamatly have this as your only gaming source for a year and not feel left out.

Their Saturn emulation seems really good too which is cool, except unlike some of the other systems it apparently doesn't let you save progress (I suppose it's a lot harder given the three CPUs and two GPUs the Saturn has...I'm sort of surprised they got it working period).
It's even got the boot screen, which is awesome (I still LOVE that boot screen...man do the new systems seem weak in comparison).

It fixes the non-continue glitch. Fantastic fix, though some games still do lag for me even with max bars(Metal slug 3 to name one). I have no idea if the deal is still going on though, someone should check.
Great news! A new version of GameTap has been released. Now you have the option to turn off progressive downloading (finally!). Just go to Download Manager -> Download Options -> Download full game. Also, some of the Challenge game and Mac client issues were fixed.

Awesome! I use Gametap in two locations, one of which I shouldn't be downloading gigantic files from

Now I don't have to do the "work around" of leaving the game running on it's title screen.

And geez do I love this service! It's got even more great games than I realized when I signed up a few weeks ago.
I have no idea if the deal is still going on though, someone should check.
Yes, the deal is still going on. You can check the current pricing by going here.

They could keep it going forever or they could get rid of it at anytime. No one really knows.

They are also taking OFF Myst:Uru live in 60(Now 59?) days. If you want to play that game before it goes off, now's the time, even if you don't subscribe for a year.

Yeah, I saw that. I loved Riven, so I was kind of interested in th at, but can't really play it until I get a laptop. Oh well.

There's a new free trivia game here that anyone can enter. I hear they have some decent prized for the winners so it might be worth a few minutes to try.

The THQ contract with GameTap was FINALLY announced. Basically every cool THQ PC game will be coming to the service over the next few months. I've been playing Company of Heroes now that I have a decent machine and I'm looking forward to that coming to the service.

Also for those interested, American McGee's Grimm has a new website at www.gametap.com/grimm. There's a bunch of shots, wallpapers and avatar icons for those intersted.

That's cool, I wouldn't mind trying Company of Heroes.

I've been looking forward to Grimm...really sounds like a cool concept. Even more excited about it after I heard the PC Gamer folks talk about it.

It's certainly a new experience. I've played quite a bit of it. Katamari Damace meets Alice is a pretty decent description. I was also impressed on the polish UE3 adds to the experience if you have a card that supports the shaders.
