Gateway 7811FX 17" Gaming laptop refurb for $750 at TigerDirect

That FX line has been a steal for quite a while-an actual pretty high end gaming laptop for under $1500....

BUT, that specific model had crashing issues on some units. Wasn't all, but it's like maybe the new chipset or something wasn't ready or something. Since this is a refurb, there's a great chance it's going to be a model that didn't work right, and was possibly not really fixed. (I mean we all know how these places stare at something go "oh it works!" and ship it back out...)

If it works though that's a really good deal. The FX laptop seems like a really nice design to me too. Nice size, decent keyboard (for a laptop), doesn't look completely crazy like the Toshiba laptops, etc.

Might be a good deal, but handing over $750 to TigerDirect is almost on par with investing it all into Circuit City stock...

just my 2 cents since I own this laptop, if it's not one with one of the new firmware revisions it's most likely going to lock up on you due to GPU overheating. I'd never get a refurb laptop, but if you're going to to take a chance this is the best laptop I've ever owned for gaming... runs Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and anything else you throw at it maxed... love it

It's already out of stock. My brother bought this laptop in August when it was $1250 at Best Buy, and it's been running fine for him so far. He says you can keep the heat down by undervolting your cpu and raising the back end of the laptop when gaming.
