GDC: Nintendo announces DLC for Wii, new Pay-for-Play system

i have so many wii games that i want to buy, but will probably wait till $20...

Im waiting for Lego star wars, nights, Tomb raider, RE4, Trauma center(the new one)...

I have a feeling this is the console that i will buy the most games for.
I rarely buy game for more than $10, maybe $15. ... even 360 games have had clearances in that range. Nintendo games? Don't count on it, I never see that. I don't think I've EVER nabbed a Gamecube game at that amount.
Lol. Give me a break.

How about Fire Emblem: PoR, Battalion Wars, Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos Origins, Chibi Robo, Killer 7, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, 1080 Avalanche, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 4 ...

The list goes on and on. All of those were $15 or less NEW.

I can definitely attest to most of those... I did pay full price for RE4, Eternal Darkness I got them when they were released but I know I saw ED numerous times for $10. Paid $25 for PoR, $13 for BW and the rest, I picked up for $10.

But I've never seen a single game with Mario in the title for less than $10 besides Mario Party 4 and Mario Golf/Kart on the GBA (all 3 at CC clearances).

I'm still a bit confused. Is the PFP system going to be a set price for all games, or is the price going to change depending on the game? Also, does this mean that the games that fall under the PFP system are going onto a better server than the free Wi-Fi server?

Good questions! I don't think we know the answers at this point. We will probably have to wait for the first PFP game to be announced to get the details.

I don't think WFC is on a server, it's peer-to-peer. I imagine anything that's PFP would involve a server, because otherwise what are you paying for?

Yeah, WFC is just peer-to-peer (XBL is also). The only thing it handles is the matchmaking and I assume stat collection if a game uses it. The only online console service that uses dedicated servers for some of its games without charging a monthly fee is PSN.

PFP is most likely going to involve any game where items/characters are stored on a server somewhere.
I don't think they ever claimed it would have DLC, Eiji Aonuma just said in an interview that it was a possibility. Obviously Nintendo's online service wasn't ready for DLC when Twilight Princess came out.
I remember that interview. He made it sound like something definite to come later in the year (2007). I wish I could remember what magazine that one was.

Nintendo Power? No way I'm digging through that propaganda to check.

thank god for DLC...i'm tired of my 360 guitar hero (and rock band for that matter) friends getting all these new fancy rock and roll songs to rock out to.

now...how far along will some kind of voice chat be? seems they already have a headset for DS. seems to be a really basic service to be offered within an online game service.

Just like Nintendo, not addressing problems with their hardware and now they want to charge for playing games online. If there were benefits to this I would pay for it but if its still the same protect the kiddies friend code system then I would not. I am still really glad I didn't buy a Wii.

Animal crossing really isn't worth it btw, with the DS game I had nothing but 8 year olds coming to my town, and I didn't find out about their age until they got to my town, making me feel really creepy for inviting an 8 year old who said they were 18. With the huge install base of kids playing on this system, I am not sure I would pay for online on it since I would be playing with nothing but children, and filtering for age would be almost impossible.

Wait what's wrong with playing with 8 year olds in Animal Crossing? Did you teach the animals in your town to say naughty things and wear clothing covered in dongs? Or are they just inept at plucking weeds? I like Animal Crossing. It doesn't seem like a game where age really matters.

I think before we all say :applause: for Pay Per Play or :bomb: PAY PER PLAY. GRAAAGH! We should wait to see what exactly will be the difference between a free Nintendo WFC game, and one that you pay. Also, price counts in that too.

If the games that have the PFP are pretty much the same as any WFC game, then that's fucked up. But hopefully, for people to actually have to pay to go online for some games, they do actually make it worth the $$$. I'm guessing it'll be monthly fees ?

I guess you missed the boat when we had a whole group of CAGs who played AC:WW on a regular basis and visited each other's towns. It was pretty fun. I'm assuming the same thing will happen when the Wii version of AC comes out.

Everyone is still jumping the gun on this whole annoucement. This was announced at GDC, which is for announcing features to other developers. PFP is basically designed for DLC and MMO-type content. It is not going to be used for Brawl or Mario Kart or any other game with typical online play.

As far as Nintendo not addressing a problem with the hardware. What problem would that be exactly?

Not releasing a larger hard drive for the machine, allowing games and other stuff to be saved to SD cards, or basically, making more storage for the machine. More and more VC games are being released and they do not realize that people are starting to fill up their hard drives and are demanding more storage.

It's a good thing you didn't buy a Wii--it would mean you had less time to troll the Wii forum.
