Plus, the fighting game scene was practically born on the shoulders of MvC2. It formed the basis for so many players because of its rise along with the internet. It saw the debut of Justin Wong. Whereas back then, we had local arcade scenes if that and we had no idea what was good. You think any of us knew about crouch canceling in SFA3 without the internet?
Let's not forget that the vs. series opened up a new sub-type of fighting game with magic series/chain combo and that MvC2 was the pinnacle, and you can see how games like MB and GG were influenced.
Ya'll need to respect your roots. =)
I wouldn't say the fighting game scene was born from MvC2. As I recall, the fighting game scene was dwindling when MvC2 was released. The scene was born with SFII and continued with games like Dark Stalkers, Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters, etc. When I think of the roots of the Vs. series, I immediately think of X-Men vs Street Fighter. It may not be the best example but it hit when fighters were still going strong and defined the formula. And when I want to respect my fighting game roots, I hit up HD Remix, Samurai Shodown Anthology, Fatal Fury Anthology volume 2 and KoF 98. But that's me.
Of all the games at Evo 2010, MvC2 seems the most boring to me. I don't know anything about Melty Blood, but that makes it interesting. TvC at high levels should be interesting. Hell, despite my dislike for SFIV, I think that game is fun to watch and I hope that SSFIV is even more entertaining. Just because MvC2 has been around forever doesn't mean it should be grandfathered in.
