I've also started playing Deus Ex (with the Shifter mod that Crotch recommended). I've just gotten past the Liberty Island part. I really wish they'd make more FPS games like this, then maybe I'd play more of them.
Recommendation: after the statue fight, avoid water like the fucking plague. Unless there's some trick that I don't know about, getting out of it can take several minutes of pushing forward, looking up, and holding jump in a few places.
It's an RPG, frames per second aren't that important.
I need those FPS, plus mouselook FTW.

Actually, I do want the PC version too. I always want the PC version.
fps not being as important doesnt also excuse horrible pop-in and loading.
Spoken like a troll who has never played the game.

Meh. As I've said many times before, I'll take slow down, pop in etc. just for the convenience of console gaming. I've never got into PC gaming for reasons I've laid out before and won't bother boring people with again.
Nah, you probably watched people playing it off DVD. Installed to HDD, none of those problems exist.

These drawbacks are somewhat alleviated if you install the game to your hard drive, but it isn't a big enough difference to justify using up such a huge amount of drive space.

Things get better if you install the game on your hard drive using the New Xbox Experience dashboard, but it is by no means fixed. All of the problems are still there in slightly less disastrous form. If you don't have a hard drive, The Last Remnant isn't worth the time of day.
Look, I'm not saying the game is shit or anything. It actually looks a lot better than the reviews would indicate. If the PC version is fixed, I may pick it up at a halfpricebooks for $10 in 3 years.

Huge amount of drive space? At 5GBs, it's one of the smallest installs I have on my HDD. I never trust reviewers since half the time they don't know what they're talking about.

Last Remnant came out pretty close to the NXE, didnt it? In that case, theres not a lot of frame of reference as far as install sizes yet except that before you didnt have the option. I can see 5 gigs in the first days of installations having a bit of shock to it.

You can not trust reviews half the time and you'd still be stuck with no reviews that redeem the game from a technical standpoint, installation or otherwise. If you find that installation remedies the problem to your satisfaction, thats great. You are however, in the extreme minority.

DMK, you're doing an awful lot of bitching about graphics for someone that hates graphics and wants games to look worse and be in 2D again. :D

I played some Fallout 3 today. I hope to play some more tonight before I head off to bed.
I'm messing around in Megaton. Just disabled the bomb and am helping fill out the survival manual. Did anyone hit a 600 radiation level for the survival guide and get treated by the girl, then get a power? If so, what exactly does said power do?

I'm almost on the last chapter of DQIV. I'm very pleased overall. I hope it finishes strong.

And I'm knee deep in Animal Crossing WW again. My girlfriend's more hooked than I am. Good stuff though. Maybe I'll pick up City Folk some time down the road.

Last Remnant is awesome. Stop it.

2D games look bad?
2D games look bad?
I was too vague there, sorry. DMK wants sprite based 2D games, says he likes seeing blocky pixels etc.

Of course 2D games can look good (cel shading etc.). But no, as much as I love SNES games, NES games etc. they don't look good by today's standards.

I like sprites. Not necessarily NES-era sprites, but the 16-bit and better sprites are ok. A game like KOFXII is a great example of 2D sprites done right (although a game like that is not easy or cheap to make these days).

I can't write LR off completely without playing it myself, but I admit it's low on my "to buy" list. And a 5GB install isn't that bad--a little above average for a PS3 game I daresay--but it is a lot for a 20GB 360.

Anyway, $20 or less and I'll consider it.

That could be part of it, but mainly he just hates technology and thinks HD graphics, online play, DLC etc. is ruining gaming.

When it's really just that he's not into FPS, western RPGs and the other big selling genres, which has very little to do with technology.

There's just a bigger market for that stuff than schmups, quirky japanese games, jrpgs, SRPGS etc.

As for graphics, I like the most realistic looking fantasy settings possible. Sounds like an oxymoron, but I mean I like games like Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Oblivion etc. Realistic graphics--but in a fantasy setting. HD has definitely made me more of a graphics whore for sure.

I think he's just a contrarian for the sake of having an online personality.

It's absurd to think "gaming" is being ruined. It doesn't take guts to say that you're unsure if MMO's are games or not, just a willingness to be noticed.

Christ, I grew up around god knows how many people who thought that Green Day and The Offspring were killing "punk rock," but that's still an absurd notion. It's pretentiousness of the highest order: the egoism involved in believing that what you personally prefer is, in toto, the boundaries by which the pinnacle of an activity (music, gaming, sports) is defined; further, that any deviation from that standard is an all-out assault on the perfection of the industry.

He's just an internet persona; and if not, then I pity the anguish he deals with when looking at what gaming has become. But, hey, if he thinks HD graphics are killing gaming, and not, say, weight loss games, games to help stop smoking, etc. then I can't simply buy that he's who he claims to be.

I like what I like. I like some shit, I dislike some other shit. Disagree with me? I'll argue with you, but that's more for the fun of it. It's not my belief that I'm "more gamer than thou" because I play fuckin' Sarariman Monogatari Densetsu 12 Dating Sim or some shit like that. You like playing some $10 hunk-a-shit Ford Crash'em Up game for your Game Boy Advance? Bully for you; I do certainly hope you enjoy the games you play. That's what matters.

Agree 100%. Hopefully it is just the typical internet case of a boring, shy person in life who doesn't have much of a voice in his social circle (if he has one) trying to be unique and have a voice (however absurd) on the net.

Like I've said so many times, if he's so against technological advances, what the fuck is he doing on the internet?

Some more than others for sure. I'm a bit more of an asshole on line that I am in real life, but I don't make up opinions etc. online or get over dramatic or anything.

I just say what I think and how I thougth it, vs. toning it down most of the time in real life (but not always, I'm more or less a strongly opinionated prick in general). :D
Please tell me you loved the new Bionic Commando then.
I did. I'm not saying I hate new graphics, it's just most games nowadays don't have the same feel as the older ones due to higher graphic limitations.

Thanks everyone for the bday comments.

Been playing a lot more Persona 3 and wow has it gotten really good. I just cleared the full moon where
Shinji confronts Ken and shinji ends up dying. All I have to say is wow I did not see that one coming.

I hope it keeps getting better and better. So back to playing it I go. Hopefully no class tomorrow so I can finish it up.

Nice.

I want to make a joke about Americans and their obssession with penis-looking sticks, but I'm too lazy. :p

Oooh, wait, I'm a lazy American! Nm. -_-

The stock stick is so short that I had to hold it funny with the ball top. the bat top extends it a little bit and lets me hold more like a standard american arcade controller, so I'm happy.

I couldn't have said it any better.

I loved the new Bionic Commando graphics. I would love to see more 2d/old school games get the same treatment.

Speaking of BC, something tells me the XBLA/PSN game will be TONS better than Rearmed.

the XBLA game is Rearmed.

I re-bought Burnout Paradise today while out looking for amazon stuff to cash out my BBV B1G1 credit. I couldn't resist at $15..

I have SO many 360 games now, it's absurd. The flipping and B1G1 made me pick up so much stuff.. most of it technically "free" when flipping is considered..

Also got a used copy of Half-Life 1 on PC for $3 at HPB, been looking for a copy for a while now.

It would be easier to be pro-technology if certain new technologies werent so shitty.

For example, once HDTVs that can actually display legacy content properly a) exist, b) overcome the disadvantages that current flat panel tech has vs CRT and c) hit competitive prices, I pretty much have no choice but to drop most of my objections to them.

Hell, I could see myself getting a bigger TV someday, I just have high standards for what a TV is going to need to do.

Does this meet your criteria?

As for the last remnant trolling - I have it installed and there is texture pop-in, but really, is that the worst thing ever?

If the first 4 seconds of a scene you spend 5 min or more in are blurry N64 textures, do you really remember those 4 seconds?

Nope.

Doesn't HDTV's not displaying legacy content correctly have mor to do with how that legacy content is formatted? for example a 480i PS2 signal is always going to look like ass on an HDTV, unless that image is reduced down to take up about 1/4th of the screen on that HDTV and is displayed at the native resolution? Displaying the original content at a resolution higher than 480i/p isn't something the PS2 is capable of doing - It would need to be an emulator or re-release that does that.

I think of it like you're looking through a window into a house. There's people and objects in the house. The PS2's window is only so big and only so clear. Up-rezzing a PS2 game involves changing the window that the people and objects are seen through, not the people and objects themselves. That's something that the PS2 cannot do. Like when you play a PS1 game on your PS3, it looks cleaner and a bit sharper, but the actual model and texture data is unchanged.

I thought that was how it works and that it's just always better to do that old stuff on an older TV, unless there's software involved that's changing the "window" you view that content through.

Huh? DMK: standard def sets can't even display legacy content properly, so why should an HDTV? That kind of statement kind of ignores the fact that "legacy content" isn't shot with HD video equipment. For traditional film content, you even have grain and other imperfections that will take away from the "purity" of a picture.

That said, I agree that the current gen of HDTVs will only get better. It's the age old question of when to jump in to technology because it's never going to be "perfected". It will only change and evolve as marketers and engineers see fit.

This is what it looks like to have too many 360 games:

Makes the Wii collection look pitiful.

Oh wait, it is.
