I'm not sure what they were thinking when they made Teirkreis. The only reason I'm buying it is because it has Suikoden in the title. I'm sure it'll be a fine RPG but they did away with so many elements that make Suikoden stand apart it might as well be named anything. The only Suikoden aspect that remained intact was the crazy amount of playable characters. Something like 94.

As for future RPGs I can't think of much. I know I'll be picking up Devil Summoner 2. I'm also keeping an eye on Arc Rise Fantasia, which looks suspiciously similar to a "Tales of" game. And besides FFXIII I can't think of much else to get excited about.

I don't think the first Devil Summoner was as horrible as people say. It's not on par with it's SMT brothers & sisters but I had fun with it. I also really like Kazuma Kaneko's art style. It just screams SMT. I want to see him do more character designs.

Yes, the random encounter rate was a bit high. And it would have been acceptable if the the battles were more than just mash "X" button.
Looks like a poor man's FF III. Why don't they just port Suikoden II, do they have a problem with money?
I don't see much on the horizon for me aside from the next Tales entry or perhaps SMT 4 if it's ever announced. FF XIII I'll buy out of obligation if I see a good deal. Anybody have any games I should be looking forward to?
Both PS Suikodens were on the PSP as a compilation, but was Japan only. I heard Sony's approval process blocked it from coming here though. I'm sure Konami wanted to put it out.

I am drawn to this DS game I picked up for $12 at a mom and pop shop, the game is called "From the Abyss" pretty good action RPG, I put three hours into it in one sitting :)

I feel like I need to get SO4 to beat it or to really put time into it. I guess the main reason I didn't like it is because I get figgity if I spend more than 3-4 hours playing a game at a time, and with SO4, you HAD to put in 3-4 hours just to get to another save point.

But it's really between SO4 and Lost Odyssey. I'll also pick up Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata but I'm not sure which games come first.

The story in LO beats out any of the other RPG's, but the gameplay in SO4 puts to shame any others.

And don't recommend Tales of Vesperia please. I had a REALLY hard time stomaching the voice acting in that game.

Picked up a few new RPGs (PS3) and I'm having trouble deciding which to start. I got:

Disgaea 3
Valkyria Chronicles
Oblivion: GOTY (coming from Goozex)

My last completed RPG was Fallout 3, which I enjoyed minus the ending. Any recommendations on which to start?

I beat DQIV friday nite! whoo!!

but... when u beat the game there's a lot of post-game stuff, and I hear u gotta be like a real high level to play it.

my character is level 33, and I dont wanna grind to 40 >_<

Grandia II is still kinda fun tho... hella easy as pie tho.

I never buy new armor or weapons, I never upgrade my skills or equip new ones, but I still win and I'm like 9 hours in lol
From what I can tell, SO4 has much more bothersome voice acting...

Who the hell cares though?
It matters more with TOV because most of the game is with cut scenes with voices. In SO4 a lot of the game is spent in battles or exploring, so you only really hear the voice acting every now and then.

And for some reason, I like the voice acting in SO4 more than in TOV. TOV had this overly done acting, like it was an infomercial or something. The emphasis and tones are overly done and sound really exaggerated, like an actor fresh out of acting class that's trying TOO hard to act. "Well that's not going to get you anywhere now is it?" just put emphasis on the italicized to understand. And say it slowly too, as to not miss punctuation or pause cues.
If I had a PS3 the first game I'd go out and buy is Valkyria Chronicles. Unfortunatly, it's the only game I'd buy.
Same here. It's on my to-get list: A PS3, that is. I'm waiting for the April price drop. $300 is the sweet spot for me to get a PS3. I know a lot of people make the Blu-Ray storage size argument, but to be honest, I paid a little over $200 for my Xbox 360 with the 60gb hard drive, wireless controller. I don't really care for Blu-Ray as I don't see the need in spending $25 a disk to get a movie. Sure there's deals, but maybe if a monthly system like GameFly with movies comes out that's really priced hot and has Blu-Ray deals as part of the rental system, then maybe I'll get Blu-Ray movies to watch. The thing is, I wouldn't feel that great watching Blu-Ray without surround sound and my dated surround sound system favors DTS standard. I know Blu-Rays also have 5.1 standard tracks, but I'd feel more like I'm watching HD if I had HD audio.

All that and I need a few more "must have" PS3 titles, like Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII (Really on the fence with this one), a Metal Gear Solid you can play. On 360 I have 7 games I REALLY need to have and 3 more on the list to get and 2 more I'm waiting for. On PS3, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 and Valkyrie Profiles are all I really want.
I remember that, but I still think Suikoden II on DS is a no brainer.
Honestly I kinda figured you'd probably already knew that. I completely agree. It should be rereleased on either portable.

Listening to the music made me remember how much Grandia II rocks. The Grandia series has one of the best turn-based battle systems. Too bad the series never recovered after Grandia Xtreme.

What do you guys think of Valkyria Chronicles getting/being rare? I have seen several people say they bought it or suggest others buy it even if they dont own a PS3 because its shipment was so low and its getting rare.
I am pretty sure it underperformed, so it could be rare. Does Sega overprint games like this?
Well I bet this is the case. I bet it is rare but the question is how rare? Is it going to be like 99% of rare games the past 2 gens where at best it maintains value, or could we see a new Suikoden 2/Valkyrie Profile finally? My guess is the former.

Well buying games to invest in is never great plan. In the NES, SNES and even PS1 days games were a lot less popular, so people missed the classics. These days it's a lot harder to tell what will appreciate in value. Plus you would have to keep it sealed, and who wants to do that?

I think its less about wanting to buy to invest(thats what my IRA is for)its more about not getting stuck later paying $130 for a game just to play it! Dont get me wrong even if most people here think its going to be rare I am not going to run out and buy it, that practice ended in the PS2 days after game after game saw re release or at best held its value. Now days even if you end up buying in at the right time and get 1 or 2 games for $40ish before they spike to $80 its not worth the other 6 games you guessed wrong on and watched as they fell to $20.

Nintendo Power's gave Tierkries it a 7/10. Which is funny cause NP was hyping the hell out of it several months back. I wouldn't call it a poor man's FFIII cause I hated that game. IMHO this is better.

It's a good RPG. But if you're a Suikoden fan you might be disappointed with them throwing out alot of elements traditionally found in a Suikoden game. For example: no runes, returning characters, weapon forging, one-on-one battles, big epic battles, & 6 member parties are reduced to only 4.

played each of these for about 45 min and I really dont know what to play thru 1st

tales of vesperia or Star Ocean the last hope?

Played through the first couple levels of Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings and I don't think I have any desire to keep playing. It was cool until the battles got too big for the screen. Having so little control over 10+ characters on the bottom DS screen = bad game.

While I think Star Ocean 3 is just as good as Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Vesperia looks much better than Star Ocean 4.

So, I started playing Star Ocean 3 yesterday. Is it really supposed to be this boring? I might have to drop it because it just isn't as enjoyable as I was lead to believe it would be. I'm only about 2.5 hrs into it (in the Norton dungeon having to find some 3 digit number or some silly fetch-shit) so maybe I need to progress a little - but I still don't see what is even so great about the battle system. I'd much prefer the traditional turn-based scheme over this.

So true. I'm done with the game now - 5 or so hours in and bored stiff.

Since playing Ys VI on the ps2 no other modern RPG has measured up to its greatness. Maybe I need to give Suikoden V a chance as number III was pretty sweet, but no others catch my attention right now.

I hated Suikoden III. Then again, I'm not into fighting little trees but that's for another time.

Willard, what didn't you like about Tales of Symphonia that makes you put it on par with Star Ocean 3?
