LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

First celebrity death on CAG that I actually said "no" when I saw the thread. I just read one of his books (although not as good as a performance, still pretty funny) and still have another one to go...

At least he got a pretty long life.

Man that's awful. I think that was the first time I actually yelled out "NO!" as I read something on the internet. RIP.

Ditto.

RIP one of my favorite comedians.

Mentioned this up above, and just because I absolutely love this act, given that it is slam poetry of great execution:

In case you want to read it:
A MODERN MAN
George Carlin

I'm a modern man, digital and smoke-free; a man for the millennium. A diversified, multi-cultural, post-modern deconstructionist; politically, anatomically and ecologically incorrect.

I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I'm a high-tech low-life. A cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, bi-coastal multi-tasker, and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond.

I'm new-wave, but I'm old-school; and my inner child is outward-bound.

I'm a hot-wired, heat-seeking, warm-hearted cool customer; voice-activated and bio-degradable.

I interface with my database; my database is in cyberspace; so I'm interactive, I'm hyperactive, and from time to time I'm radioactive.

Behind the eight ball, ahead of the curve, ridin' the wave, dodgin' the bullet, pushin' the envelope.

I'm on point, on task, on message, and off drugs. I've got no need for coke and speed; I've got no urge to binge and purge.

I'm in the moment, on the edge, over the top, but under the radar.

A high-concept, low-profile, medium-range ballistic missionary.

A street-wise smart bomb. A top-gun bottom-feeder.

I wear power ties, I tell power lies, I take power naps, I run victory laps.

I'm a totally ongoing, big-foot, slam-dunk rainmaker with a pro-active outreach.

A raging workaholic, a working rageaholic; out of rehab and in denial.

I've got a personal trainer, a personal shopper, a personal assistant, and a personal agenda.

You can't shut me up; you can't dumb me down.

'Cause I'm tireless, and I'm wireless. I'm an alpha-male on beta-blockers.

I'm a non-believer, I'm an over-achiever; Laid-back and fashion-forward. Up-front, down-home; low-rent, high-maintenance.

I'm super-sized, long-lasting, high-definition, fast-acting, oven-ready and built to last.

A hands-on, footloose, knee-jerk head case; prematurely post-traumatic, and I have a love child who sends me hate-mail.

But I'm feeling, I'm caring, I'm healing, I'm sharing. A supportive, bonding, nurturing primary caregiver.

My output is down, but my income is up. I take a short position on the long bond, and my revenue stream has its own cash flow.

I read junk mail, I eat junk food, I buy junk bonds, I watch trash sports.

I'm gender-specific, capital-intensive, user-friendly and lactose-intolerant.

I like rough sex; I like tough love. I use the f-word in my e-mail. And the software on my hard drive is hard-core--no soft porn.

I bought a microwave at a mini-mall. I bought a mini-van at a mega-store. I eat fast food in the slow lane. I'm toll-free, bite-size, ready-to-wear, and I come in all sizes.

A fully equipped, factory-authorized, hospital-tested, clinically proven, scientifically formulated medical miracle.

I've been pre-washed, pre-cooked, pre-heated, pre-screened, pre-approved, pre-packaged, post-dated, freeze-dried, double-wrapped and vacuum-packed.

And . . . I have unlimited broadband capacity.

I'm a rude dude, but I'm the real deal. Lean and mean. Cocked, locked and ready to rock; rough, tough and hard to bluff.

I take it slow, I go with the flow; I ride with the tide, I've got glide in my stride.

Drivin' and movin', sailin' and spinnin'; jivin' and groovin', wailin' and winnin'.

I don't snooze, so I don't lose. I keep the pedal to the metal and the rubber on the road. I party hearty, and lunchtime is crunch time.

I'm hangin' in, there ain't no doubt; and I'm hangin' tough. Over and out.

I really should take the time to memorize it one day.

Wow.

A very funny comedian and a true comedic legend. He will be dearly missed.

I had the chance to go to one of his shows not too long ago, but didn't. I'm regretting that now.

I had a chance too about a year ago, but I passed it up.

I've been saying to myself ever since then "I'll go see him soon".....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What terrible news! This jut smacked me when I saw on the front page of CAG. I haven't turned on the news or gone to any news sites, but I'm still in shock at this.

He was supposed to play The Orleans, out here (Vegas), soon again. I believe he just finished a stint June 12-14, or around those dates. I couldn't get tickets. His concerts would always sell out before I could get tickets. I still haven't seen him perform live, and now never will :( At least I've seen all of his HBO specials, heard all of his recordings, and read all of his books. He'll definitely be missed. The greatest comedian has had his last hurrah.

Woah, didn't see this coming at all. He seemed to be kickin' it full blast on It's Bad for Ya. Thought he'd be around for at least another decade...

A loss, indeed.

Had a great interview on leno a couple years ago if I remember correctly, did an impromptu "poem" with perfect flow scheme...RIP, you will be missed.

Edit: And strell posted the video clip to it and I'm a moron, good to see it again though
Damn I've had him in my sig for a while now.

This sucks because all I see are Carlins dying and Dane Cooks taking their place.
Indeed.

Comedy’s patron saint has left us. May the sun shine brighter now that he has returned home. Thank you, Mr. Carlin.
He will be missed.

First it was Stan Winston, then George Carlin...who's the third?
The third, or first in this case, was Tim Russert. There, the trilogy has been completed.
Man that's awful. I think that was the first time I actually yelled out "NO!" as I read something on the internet. RIP.
2 girls, one cup?

My favorite comedian.. RIP..

I also yelled "NO!!!!!!!" when I read the news, though I saw it from CNN. I'm really bummed out now.

I just downloaded "It's Bad For Ya" the other day, I watched it several times on my iPhone during the past week.

George, I know you're not looking down at us, smiling, or looking up at us. It's all made up bullshit and you're just dead in the ground. Well, unless they haven't put you in the ground yet.

You take the pie. And since you're takin' it, stop by the bakery so it can see the other pies.

You old fuck.

j.-

You know, he's probably calling out from the afterlife right now that we're all a bunch of over-sentimental pussies who should go fuck ourselves.

Two of my favorite comedians are now deceased, Mitch Hedberg beign the other. I actually got to see Hedberg and I so wanted to see Carlin live. I'm a little depressed now.
