I am sure your parents know this, but if the not thinking clearly is due to a medical problem, your dad can claim on long term disability assuming he had coverage. Sorry to say though if he didn't have coverage, he's out of luck as far as I know.
Well he has chronic gillian beret syndrome, a nerve disorder that can, potentially, essentially paralyze you (to the point of needing a respirator to breathe). He's back to about 80% strength, and has been cleared (mentally and physically) by multiple doctors, but when you actually have to work full time as an account, he makes a few mistakes here and there and that adds up over time. He used to do the job very easily and was one of the people who could basically do what he wanted without risk of getting fired (one time he walked out of an important meeting cause he was late for a family vacation and his boss told him repeatedly he'd be fired if he did, but he never was), but he just can't do it anymore. He got fired after 6 months at this job because of all the mistakes, the first time he was ever really fired (he was downsized once, he was in the second to last mass firing, of 5, before the company closed, he was sorta lucky, the decision was made the weekend that he had to be rushed to the hospital, so he was on their medical coverage for about 6 months before being let go). He never told this company about the problem though.
I really don't know what we have and what we don't, everyone uses my mothers medical coverage from her job (which is very good and covers the whole family), but everything is linked to work. I'm not sure what my father has/ doesn't have now, but I would assume he'd know that.
