Getting Plowed By 16 Inches of OTT

Definitely not the biostar. I like MSI boards myself, but either of those ASUS boards should be good. I'd get the second one.

Yeah, I love Asus. I've ordered open box mobos from Newegg before. They are brand new most of the time. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I'm leaning towards the third choice myself.

I guess the real question is, what Zew plans on using the PC for. If he's not going to fill the thing with components, then there's nothing wrong with a micro atx, espc if he's trying to keep it small.

If open box is fine, then by all means, go for the third. For the small increase in price you get quite a few more features than the second board.

Here's a question. I have three sticks of RAM.

2x DDR2 800 2GB
1x DDR2 667 2GB

It wouldn't be a good idea to use that 667 with the 800, would it?

The ram will run at slowest speed supported, so they would all run at 667. I was just looking at other boards, most were micro atx anyway.
Alright. That's what I thought.

Now I wish I would have bought another pair of those sticks.
Even better would have been two sticks of 4GB instead of four sticks of 2GB.

My personal rule is to never have more than two sticks of memory in your system.

I have an Antec 300 case. It's ATX sized, so micro doesn't matter. I usually get micro because it's cheaper and I don't have a lot of PCI devices.

I only see two sticks of 4GB RAM on Newegg and they are ridiculously expensive.

What's wrong with four sticks of 2GB if they are all the same?

It's not horrible, but with four sticks they just don't work as fast as two sticks. I'm just that picky about it.

Looks like my mobo is still covered under warranty.

I guess I can RMA. Never done that before, but it will be cheaper.

thank you stepdad for the new snowblower :whee: with about a foot of snow we did the whole goddamm driveway and front walk in about 10 minutes.

A couple of years back the local news for my little cousin who was about 5 at the time (who's obsessed with farming) came along and asked all the kids at his school what they wanted for Christmas.

So they get to my little cousin and they ask him "What do you want Joshua?" He says "I want a manure spreader"....People on the news are laughing their heads off..."Joshua, a manure spreader? Why would you want that?"
Joshua looks at her like she's stupid and says "To spread manure!"

Its one of those things his parents are going to show his first girlfriend when he grows up or whatever...

What are the pros and cons of using a LCD monitor (or some other good quality computer monitor) as a "TV" AND computer monitor vs buying an HDTV as a TV and a LCD monitor for the computer?

I haven't bought an HDTV yet , and I'm planning on getting (building?) a desktop in the next few months anyway , so I'm trying to decide to just forgo the TV and use the monitor for both , or get both anyway.

If you don't mind a smaller size for the television I'd imagine it would be a pretty nice setup.

You could also buy a TV that has VGA input.

Hadn't thought about the VGA input thing.

I don't really mind the smaller size of the TV issue. I know everyone says that once you get a bigger TV you won't want to go back to a smaller one , and since I'm still using my 20" that I got a few years ago I've been fine with that and haven't "gotten used to" a bigger one.

The main thing I've been thinking about is since I really only use my TV for playing games and watching DVDs anyway , I don't watch that much TV shows , why have both?

Again, I think the main deal here is how many digital inputs you'd require -- if you have a cable box that can output HDMI and your 360/PS3 do HDMI, you'd probably be able to manage with some sort of HDMI input switch and then connect the HDMI switch to your LCD monitor via a HDMI -> DVI cable? I'm just guessing here, since I've never done it, but if I were to use the 22" monitor I have in the office as my "main TV", I'd think I'd need a way to connect all my inputs. Also, as I stated, you'd need a cable box of some sort since the monitor wouldn't have a built in tuner.

I've was thinking about that too. I haven't really done any research on how well this would work out for me , its just something that kinda came to me as something to consider.

You think a DirecTV satellite box work just as well as a cable box?

How much do you want an HDTV? If you have a lot of shit to connect it might be easier to buy a TV and use VGA for your computer, then connecting your devices won't be an issue.

That might really be the better idea , since the main thing i want the desktop for is playing PC games. I already have my laptop which I can continue using for general day to day things and keep the desktop for primarily gaming.

Yes, so long as the DirecTV box has some sort of digital out. The box is basically a tuner, I believe.

Rocko, what happens if you're playing Xbox 360 and decide you want to do a different activity, like watch TV or use a standalone DVD player? When it transitions, does it know that the TV is already on?

:rofl:i might've seen this before, but i just stumbled it again - it's hillarious

ACTUAL COLLEGE THEME PAPER - HEY I COULDN'T MAKE THIS UP
Remember the book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"?
Well, here's a prime example offered by an English professor
at an American University.

"Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story.
The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person
sitting to his or her immediate right. One of you will then write
the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the
first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The
first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and
forth. Remember to reread what has been written each time in order
to keep the story coherent. There is to be absolutely NO talking
and anything you wish to say must be written on the paper. The
story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached."

The following was actually turned in by two of my English students:

Rebecca -last name deleted, and Jim - last name deleted.

------------------------------------------------------------
STORY:
(First paragraph by Rebecca)
At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The
chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home,
now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times,
that he liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs,
keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if
she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again.
So chamomile was out of the question.
-----------------------------------------------------
(Second paragraph by Jim)
Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack
squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to
think about than the neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named
Laurie with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. "A.S.
Harris to Geostation 17, he said into his trans- galactic communicator.
"Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so
far..." But before he could sign off, a bluish particle beam flashed
out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The
jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across
the cockpit.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
He bumped his head and died almost immediately but not before he
felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one
woman who had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth
stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers
of Skylon 4. Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and
Space Travel," Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news
simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window,
dreaming of her youth, when the days had passed hurriedly and
carefree, with no newspapers to read, no television to distract
her from her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things
around her. "Why must one lose one's innocence to become a woman?"
she pondered wistfully.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
Little did she know, but she had less than 10 seconds to live.
Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian mothership
launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted
wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace Disarmament
Treaty through the congress had left Earth a defenseless target
for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the
human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty
the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough
firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop
them, they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium
fusion missile entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President,
in his top-secret Mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor
off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably massive explosion,
which vaporized poor, stupid Laurie and 85 million other Americans.
The President slammed his fist on the conference table. "We can't
allow this! I'm going to veto that treaty! Let's blow 'em out of
the sky!"
---------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
This is absurd. I refuse to continue this mockery of literature.
My writing partner is a violent, chauvinistic semi-literate
adolescent.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
Yeah? Well, you're a self-centered tedious neurotic whose attempts
at writing are the literary equivalent of Valium. "Oh shall I have
chamomile tea? Or shall I have some other sort of F*CKING TEA??? Oh
no, I'm such an air headed bimbo who reads too many Danielle Steele
novels."
----------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
Asshole.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
Bitch.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
Wanker.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
slut.
---------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
Get f*cked.
----------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
Eat shit.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Rebecca)
F*CK YOU - YOU NEANDERTHAL!!!
----------------------------------------------------------
(Jim)
Go drink some tea - whore.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Teacher)
A+ I really liked this one.

When I switch from Watch a DVD to Watch TV, it keeps the TV on and just switches the input.
I really hope ?.cd does a Christmas free leech.
Indeed. The things that I need right now are killing my ratio.
Hmm, if you're playing 360 and then transition to watch TV would it turn off the Xbox?
When I'm watching a DVD and transition to TV it turns off the DVD player.

You can customize all of this, as well. The activities are fully customizable. You can set it to do anything to any device. So if it doesn't turn off the 360 automatically you can set it to have the 360 off when you enter Watch TV mode.

hey rocko, i dunno if you heard since you were at WDW, but frosty and i are going to ft myers afterall. thanks for the suggestion!
Awesome. Are you staying with that relative in Venice?

Just going to chill at the beach for a few days?
yup. i plan on spending xmas day on the beach with a flask/case of beer.
