Just got back from GameStop! I traded in Bulletstorm, LBP, and Enslaved and got a used copy of Dragon Age 2 (special sale price $31!), renewed my Powerup Card (yayyy, GameInformer), and still have $14 in credit left. Great day.
Also, I just 1CC'ed DeathsmilesIIX Mode with Follett and judging by her hot spring ending (and one of Lei's endings) I'm gonna say that Casper has a thing for Lei.
I'll make sure to give you guys live updates from E3
And I finished another game this week, YAY! Dead to Rights Retribution was fun, but the checkpoint system was atrocious. Couple of trophies left to get and then I can get my sweet platinum!
So, like... what are you guys excited for at E3? The only two things I give a damn about is 3s online and SFxT.
Super MvC3 not on your list?
Pretty much what you mention. I think those two games are the only two games we'll probably see information on where not a lot was available before. I'd be curious to see TxSF if they had anything to show as well, just to see how they handle the style differences. Maybe Asura's Wrath too. Gameplay from that would be good. Also want to se what a train wreck DmC is, I guess.
Can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure there's probably stuff I'd be like "ooooh." about if it pops up.
Its a good thing you put that there. I swear everytime IRC is mentioned someone is like how do I get on IRC?
Hopefully he'll remind us to use that site with instructions on the room when the E3 stuff happens. If it's during my normal workday, I can probably join the room, but how chatty I am probably depends on how busy work is and if I can pay attention to the streams.

Also, for anyone wondering the Sims 3 on 360 is probably the worst console port of anything ever. Just pure absolute shit.
Hey, anyone that has played DA2! What'd you think of the game? I'm liking the combat and everything much better except the story. I'm feeling like it isn't really a full-fledged sequel and it's more like a little add-on because nothing I'm doing seems to be a big deal. Do I eventually do stuff later that is a big deal? So far the only that I've done that felt like a big deal was
resurrecting Flemeth. After which I promptly exclaimed, "HOLY SHIT."
There's a handful of games I'm looking forward to like Gears 3, ME3, AC: Revelations, Batman: Arkham City etc., but I don't really care about seeing more about them since their must buys and I like to stay as spoiler free as possible.
I'm looking forward to hearing about any new games that haven't already been announced or gotten much attention yet. I'm also curious about the new Nintendo console that is supposed to be revealed as well as a possible price/date for the NGP.
I hope it has a good amount of Altair in the game.
Because he's the best.
I'm starting to get sick of Ezio to be honest. It feels like they are just milking the success of AC2 (despite brotherhood being genuinely interesting).
I don't follow gaming news that closely, and last year wasn't all that exciting (I caught live streams of Sony and Nintendo), but lets see things I'm looking forward to:
An announcment for more Monster Hunter for America. (I can hope. )
Watching Sony try and rebuild their image (if the PSN store isn't back by E3 I'm sure it will make it even more interesting. :lol

Mothaa, you're asking for a wall o' text, you know that?
Mixed as . This is probably gonna sound more negative than positive though, since DAO was a damn good game, and it's pretty hard to go wrong with that as the core, and I'm not gonna compliment DA2 for getting right things that DAO got right.
Combat was serviceable, save for the constant enemy spawns. Horrible, horrible decision. I though DAO's "a flamethrower in every back alley" fights were over-engineered. I once completed some great big plot-relevant sidequest, only to exit the building I was in and get in a bigger, harder fight than I'd had throughout the whole quest.
The "cross-class-combo" system is more transparent than the spell combination system of DAO (that's a good thing), but also arbitrary as (that's a bad thing). Why does scatter do extra damage to disoriented enemies, but not assault? Why does chain lightning do extra damage to staggered enemies but not disoriented enemies? Why does pommel strike stagger enemies but not tremor?
Answer: because arbitrary reasons, that's why.
Also, tanks and healers are nearly worthless.
Some of the enemy designs - specifically, the infamous roges and mages - were horrible. Rogues ignore nearly every method of gathering and managing threat, which is supposed to be, like, half the damn game. Mages... well, there's a reason mages in DAO had spells from the same pool as you, you know? DA2 mages are ethereal jack-in-the-boxes, operating on their own bizarre, separate rules apart from the reality every other character exists in. Even when not actively dangerous (which is quite often, as they spend more time teleporting and standing inside bubble shield things than actually fighting), it's annoying as .
The voice acting was generally good, including for Hawke, though I wish the protagonist hadn't been voiced. Voicing every line heavily restricts the amount of lines you can have, which leads to the dialogue wheel, which means there are only ever at most three different things you can say and what the ? They're usually well written, but there are just too damn many times there's no choice between pussy, idiot, and asshole. At least they didn't map "skip dialogue line" and "choose next dialogue line" to the same key like ME did. Damn you, ME!
The overarching plot was a mixed bag. On the one hand, I always prefer more "personal" stories, especially in RPGs, and especially in WRPGs. I'd rather see The Nameless One reclaim what he has lost than Commander Shepard stop the Reapers. I'd rather see Ryu get revenge for his people on Ultimecia than Cloud save the world from a giant meteor. And, yes, I'd much rather play through Hawke's rise to Champion than the Warden saving his/her country (aided somewhat by the fact that Kirkwall is a dang interesting looking city).
Except... that's not quite what you're doing in DA2. That's what BioWare was trying to get at, but they don't quite manage it. The problem is that everything that happens, happens to you, not because of you. You are entirely reactive. Everyone in the game has some goal, something they're working towards - except you. You're just there to deal with whatever they do.
To answer your specific question, though, yes, your involvement in events does become more meaningful as time goes on, albeit not necessarily as I would have liked it.
The changes to equipment, items, and inventory were... bad all around. Making it so that runes are destroyed when replaced rather than simply removed encourages people to horde rare runes rather than use them. Equipment was highly linear; virtually everything was either better or worse, not "as good as, but different", making different characters nearly identical. A level 10 warrior will always be wearing this because it's the best thing available to a warrior at level 10, and a level 20 mage will always have this and this on because that's the best stuff for a level 20 mage. I'm not even getting into companion gear.
And would it kill you to put some flavour text on your shit? I once opened a treasure chest and found a "fell residue". What in all of holy horse cocks is that? And why did Bodahn buy it for two silver?
This has been pretty negative. You know what's good? How much more transparent a lot of shit got. Did cone of cold do more damage than fireball in DAO? ed if I know, but simply hovering over an ability in DA2 will tell you what's what. Did Sten-who-swings-once-every-fifteen-seconds actually do more damage than Alistair-the-tank? I never really knew, but DPS is listed on every weapon and character's screen.
Mixed-but-generally-positive: the redesign of the world. Qunari are the big winners in particular, but even the Avatar-elves came out pretty good, I think. Some boo-urns' necessary because why wasn't this shit in there in the first place, guys, and did you seriously just rewrite entire characters from DAO why didn't you just make new characters?
Speaking of which, I generally preferred the characters in DA2 to Origins. None quite as complex as Morrigan, sure, but I didn't have to put up with Leliana's shit.
Leliana.
This post is too long.
And the last couple hours of the game suuuuuuuuuucked.
Merril's solid, though she's about the worst example of rewriting possible. Don't know why they didn't just make a new character rather than take an existing DAO character and give her a new appearance, personality, and voice.
And, yeah, the cynic in me wants to say she was a cash-in on the popularity of Tali, but the part of me that likes being pandered to can beat the shit out of the cynic in me any day, so Yeah Merril!
Leliana... isn't a terrible character, though she's a very strong example of how gameplay concerns override most anyone's attempts to actually "roleplay" in a role playing game. Nevermind that she seems completely batshit crazy right off the hop, we lose a lot of EXP if we don't have someone who can open treasure chests!

You summed up a lot of what I feel. I really feel like I'm just totally reactive, totally different than DAO. Thanks for letting me know the stuff I'm doing later will feel more important.
I'm also curious about where the special text went for items... EVERYTHING in DAO had a story behind it. ing blank papers even had a 5-10 word explanation about what they were.
You know how you find out what's more damaging than what in DAO? Turn on the option that shows damage. You can see everything in color coded wonder, my Sten totally hit harder than anyone.
I genuinely love the redesigns on everything, Elves seeming taller is my favorite. I'm genuinely worried about how my Elf from the first game will look, though.
I'm only 5 hours in, but right now I disagree on characters. I loved everyone in DAO. Alistair, Leliana, Sten, Shale, Morrigan. So far, I think I only like the Elf chick in DA2.
I will say this: DA2 does a great job of making seemingly inconsequential shit turn out to be huge. Sometimes it feels like an enormous cheap-shot, but it's usually well done.

There's damage, and there's DPS. Sten did more damage, but did he do more damage when you factor in the fact that it takes him far longer to attack? In Starcraft, a tank will do 70 damage in "siege mode" compared to the 30 it does firing its regular cannon - yet it will do more damage per second with its regular cannon because its regular cannon fires more than twice as fast.
You still use siege mode, of course, because it has a superior maximum range and does splash damage.
You can figure it out, yes, but I love the fact that DA2 just ing tells you right there.

My main playthrough of DAO didn't have Leliana, but I never had a problem with XP, I still got up to 36 after all the DLC and never had too hard of a time. I didn't think she really seemed crazy, though. She just seemed a little different. I attributed everything weird about her to the whole her being betrayed thing.
Edit: I never worried or wondered about DPS. Except for the Archdemon no battle took more than 2 minutes. It was Cone of Cold, Tempest, done.

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt as well. She had such a minor role in only one origin story in the first game, so I don't even see why they couldn't make up a new character.
Nevermind that she seems completely batshit crazy right off the hop, we lose a lot of EXP if we don't have someone who can open treasure chests!
Worth it though. Not having to deal with her craziness was worth not having a rogue.
At least Awakenings had the super awesome Sigrun though.

I'm totally missing out on the Merril love, I didn't play a Dalish Elf, I ended up playing the Elvish Mage and started in the Circle. Does she act the same in the first game?
I also agree on the Sigrun love. I loved her, I wish she was in DA2. Also, how'd you guys like the Black Emporium? I LOVE IT. So ing random.

Nope, she's bland and forgettable in Origins. Such a minor role anyway, you didn't miss anything.

So yesterday I was playing Phantasy Star Portable 2 and there was someone else there named Joel and I was like "Too bad that's not Captain Joel. Just a normal Joel without a rank"
