The metroidvania ones are the only ones I really liked. But I've never cared much for side scrolling action games like the other Castlevanias, Mega Man and what not.

Whereas Super Metroid is my all time favorite game.

So like my favorite Castlevania and Metroid are both on the GBA.

Aria of Sorrow and Fusion.

Funny part is that I believe that Soma Cruz is the most OP vampire slayer and Fusion Samus is the most OP bounty hunter of the series.

Aria and Dawn of Sorrow are my favorites as well. Soma is awesome.

I don't remember Fusion that well. It was a good 10 years or so ago that I played it. I remember it being a solid game.

Nothing will ever top Symphony of the Night for me as far as Castlevania games, at this point I'm extremely confident no future game is going to be more enjoyable to me (I play SotN about once a year); a lot of the handheld ones were really good though (save Portrait of Ruin which was a bit closer to meh).

And Metroid Prime is my favorite Metroid game, but I basically enjoy all of them after Super Metroid (save for Other M which I'm not going to talk about).

I've finished Symphony of the Night. . .no clue how many times. Shit, I imported the Saturn version and finished it twice with Alucard, once with Richter, and once with Maria. So yes, I'm quite fond of that game. Aria of Sorrow is also excellent, best of the 3 GBA ones easily, but I've never finished any of the DS ones.

Super Metroid is my favorite SNES game. I'm due for a playthrough, takes me an hour and a half or so, 2 if I'm taking my time. I'm not near the speed run times, but I'm no slouch. Also love Fusion and Zero Mission.
I really liked LoS. I think it did a good job of bringing Castlevania back to the consoles. I am looking forward to the sequel.
No. Just because you have a new baby (congrats btw) I will not tolerate this statement. LoS is not a Castlevania game.

I am just bitter that the newest 2d Castlevania is for the 3ds.

Fusion is the best to me.

I've probably played through it
A million bajillion times

Also I love Rei and his LoS opinions.
Is that the same guy that said he was ashamed of Saints Row 3 and that 4 would be more "serious" or something?
I didn't mind SR3, but I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as I did SR2. But if part 4 goes more serious then I'm out and done with the series.

Mind ya, I'm kinda done with the series after the DLC money grab they made after the release of part 3. Especially after finding out that the Professor Genki island from one of the DLC's is already in the damn game.:whistle2:#:bomb:
Metroidvania style games bore me.
I'll drink to this. I've played the GBA Metroids and the DS Castlevanias and kept wondering when the fun part was supposed to happen.

In other news, SFIV for $10 on 3DS is a purchase I can justify.

Bad idea, don't do it, not even worth $10. Not because it's SFIV, but because it's an older version that runs at 30fps online and in 3D mode. There's like... no reason to own it, at all.

But... But... $10... And fuck online play, I just want a fighter for my 3DS. I just can't wrap my head around it. Even at $10 it's not worth the purchase? I guess mall Chinese food could be a better investment?

Yes, because it's more satisfying and delicious.
Don't. Hank will never leave.
What if I don't want him to?

I can understand not liking it, but what makes LoS not a Castlevania game? It has vampires, a castle, Dracula, a Belmont who uses a whip, etc. It's technically more of a Castlevania game than the metroidvania style games.

That's debatable.
I think a good bit of the metroidvania games have all that too. The only thing they're missing in some cases is a Belmont or a whip; but traditionally Castlevania was a 2D sidescrolling platformer series, there's only been a few 3D games and most of them are generally regarded pretty poorly.

I really hope the sequel addresses a lot of the bullshit issues I felt the first game had. I'm also interested in the 3DS game, but that will be far down the road as I have no plans for a 3DS at this point.

By that I mean the level structure is more like the original games than the metroidvania style.

By Castlevania I mean Metroidvania.

Metroidvania:

Distinct features associated with the Metroidvania formula are side-scrolling, exploratory, action-adventure gameplay, power-ups, and a map that is filled in automatically as the player progresses through the game.

A strong element of this genre is that the map is largely contiguous, offering no breaks in play aside from the occasional load screen. Some purists refuse to acknowledge a game as a Metroidvania unless it meets this criteria though others will include games which feature small breaks in play, such as Clash at Demonhead.

I'm still enjoying it regardless of what it's called.

The parts where it tries to be a platformer and totally fails don't even bug me.

I actually liked those. Instead of auto-scaling walls like Drake in Uncharted, you could easily die if you fucked up your whip jumps. Felt like it took some skill, though sometimes the fixed camera was a dirty hooker and caused some cheap deaths.

I absolutely hated LoS when it first came out but the trailer for 2 made me buy it for $10 and I ended up getting 1000/1000 on it in a week. Its the best 3D castlevania game (Not saying much) out there and I am totally buying part 2 to support mercurysteam. Still unsure on the 3DS game though

Loved Aria of Sorrow. Dawn of sorrow is my favorite castlevania DS game with portrait of ruin being a close 2nd. OoE was shitty

I'm still kicking myself for skipping out on the Castlevania HoD DLC sale.

I was not a fan of LoS since it basically seemed like everything I don't like about God of War minus everything I do like about God of War, plus some added annoyances. It did have nice production values though. I don't plan to play the sequel, however, I do think the one on 3DS looks like it could be interesting.

Symphony of the Night is definitely my favorite of the metroidvanias. I liked all the GBA ones, though Circle of the Moon was a bit on the difficult side for me--but I got through it.

I liked the DS ones as well except for Order of Ecclesia. Didn't like the characters much, and difficulty was annoying for me. Only one of the handheld ones I didn't finish.

As for similar games. Shadow Complex was awesome. Aiming controls a bit wonky sometimes, but otherwise great. I also loved Outland. The bullet hell stuff in some of the bosses (especially the last) drove me nuts as I hate that pattern memorization type of difficulty. But everything else was awesome.
I only put Aria of Sorrow above SotN because of how OP Soma Cruz is. So gawdamn OP and fun.
I think the collecting mechanic there, and in Dawn of Sorrow, are much better than the random drops of SotN for some reason. That and the variety in the abilities you can use makes it that much more varied and interesting to play.
