Guide is a decent baseline but has some silly bits.

CPU and heatsink: Getting a non-k version is fine if you don't want to overclock. If you do want to overclock, it's pointless. A k version is only, like, 10-15 dollars more, though (though the price difference increases when you buy an aftermarket fan, which is more-or-less necessary for overclocking but otherwise pointless). Not sure why they picked a 3550 over a 3570, though, which again is a minor difference. I'd recommend either a 3570k with a heatsink (say, Coolermaster Hyper 212) to overclock or a regular 3570 for budget reasons.

Motherboard: The very basics of it are this: if you want to overclock, get a Z77 board. If you don't, get an H77. And don't overpay for features that you won't use.

RAM: "Hey guys, we're making a budget-ish computer build guide. How much extra unnecessary RAM should we throw in?" fuck you, Destructoid. Go with their second option. Most any 1.5v RAM will cost ~$40 at 8 gigs.

GPU: The 7770 is pretty weak compared to even their choice of processor. I don't know why the fuck they would tell you to spend $65 on RAM and you don't need and a heatsink you won't use then skimp on the god damn GPU. In addition to j-cart's recommendation, consider AMD's entry at that price level: the 7850. Slightly better value:dollar, but AMD has a reputation for shitty driver issues. Choose as you will.

PSU: Seriously, j-cart? No. Use this. You do not need 650w. I don't need 650w, and my computer draws a fair bit more power than anything you'll get for

Thanks for the advice j-cart and Crotch. I'm also going to need a monitor, so if anyone has any tips for things to look for in one of those, I'd appreciate it.

Well, shit. The monitor's gonna make your build a fair bit more expensive.

What's your budget, anyway? What's your minimum screen size and resolution?

Well I'd like to keep the computer around $700 or less and the monitor around $150. I'd prefer a screen size of 23" or higher, but I'd consider as low as 21". As for minimum resolution, I'm not sure. I guess 1920 x 1080? I don't really know much about monitors.

Because, just like 16 gigs of RAM or an aftermarket heatsink on a 3550, he doesn't need 500W+.

The one I linked him to suits his needs and is extremely efficient.

I have a 700w PSU, but I also have an overclocked 480 that probably draws almost 300w when it's maxed out. . .Plus my 2500k, while rated at a max of 95w, is overclocked to 4.5 GHz, so it's probably a bit over 100w when pushed. Throw in 6 HDDs, two 120 mm fans on my heatsink, and 6 140 mm case fans, and I'm probably in the 500w range. . .

The idea is to be over what you actually need so the PSU doesn't have to push itself to the limit. How much over is subjective, but people definitely don't need 1000w unless they are running three GPUs. If your PSU is getting noticeably hot, then you're stressing that bitch out. And depending on build quality, it won't be too long before you hear that lovely POP POP POP sound of caps blowing.

Also that Rosewill PSU only has 37 amps on its 12v rail, and Nvidia recommends to have 38 amps for a 560 Ti 448. Gonna need at least a 500w, and I'd get a 600w just to be safe.

But what do I know? I've only been blowing up PSUs for the last 12 years.

1: Unless it has disproportionately high draw compared to other cards, no, it doesn't. Depending on the other parts, of course. I mean shit, we're recommending PSUs and we still don't even know if he wants to overclock or not.
2: You're gradually softening your position. You started at 650w, then dropped to 500w+, now 500w.

EDIT: Though as a strike against me, I have no fucking idea why I posted that PSU instead of this one.

Safety netting, that is all.

I have a 500W 80 silver rating and I just keep kicking myself for not getting something bigger because now I want to upgrade but not have to upgrade everything else at the same time.

My monitor knowledge is very basic. If you get something 1920x1080 with a stand that isn't complete and utter shit, you've probably done decently.

Oh good, I have done decently.
