Konami announced Gradius Rebirth yesterday.

Oh shit, is that really that collection?

Day 1.

EDIT: Yeah, it definitely is.

Gradius Rebirth seems to be taking a page from Mega Man 9 with a very 8-bit look to it. I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a Wiiware game, but I'm pretty satisifed with Gradius Collection on PSP for that retro fix, so I'm not sure I'm going to pick it up.

Star Parodier isn't that bad. Looks fun, but I've already earmarked the PC Engine Best Collection for PSP with those Soldier games on it already. Almost wish I hadn't have picked up Soldier Blade on VC earlier, but it's nice to have it on console, too.

maaaan neogaf lied to me... it didnt come out, but we got sum import shmups for genesis.

but pffffft who wants to play genesis games on the Wii?!?! that's what PSP is for.

if only PSP SNES emulation was as good as genesis tho... everytime I try to play UN Squadron I jus get depressed...

respect!!!

Ohhhh, man. I'd kill for UN Squadron on VC or PSP.

Well, not really, but I want that one bad!

And yah I'm not really into mame or other PC emu. I dunno why...
Hm, I think this is the US version of the Milestone shooting collection (Karous, Radilgy, etc) for Wii, if anyone was interested:

http://www.amazon.com/Tommo-Wii-106...?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1216417266&sr=1-251

Was hoping for $19.99 or less, so I'm definitely passing on this one.
I'll get it. It beats having to hook up my DC and do some disc swapping for Karous and Radilgy.

EDIT - Yes, I know they both pretty much suck but that just makes playing them on the DC harder to justify.

Yeah, Ikaruga is cool, but I really feel like Under Defeat is better... I love how the way bullets work in the game forces you to weave all over the place... really gives the game a different sort of feel.

lol I read the virtual console thread jus now in Wii forum...

sum of those guys are straght shmup haters...

the only thing I gotta say to a hater is

I just got me Castle of Shikigami III and raiden 3 (even though I have a copy but its in storage) so I'm i will busy for a few. :) ALso, under defeat is an awesome game that I just like seeing those explosions.

most of them don't know good games to save their life. The VC is the big driving point in making me want a Wii...don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing

Pretty much. Bad taste FTL.

Anyway, I'm hella tempted to finally pick up Zero Gunner 2. It's really the only Dreamcast game left that I want. I thought about getting Border Down, coz I can afford it if I want it, but the game's just not that cool... I'd rather play Gradius or a Thunder Force game, honestly. I still think the pinnacle of G Revs stuff is Under Defeat... Senko no Ronde made it clear that they are no miracle company all the time, though.

If you liked UD, you'll probably like Zero Gunner 2. Not sure if you'll like it less, but I think it's solid and fun. It's also pretty popular and somewhat rare, so if you can find a copy, it'd be worth a pick up.

I still haven't cracked open my copy of Border Down LE. I know I've probably played better horizontal shmups, and the game is so rare I just wonder if I hold out long enough I can sell it for big bucks. :p

Zero Gunner 2 is fun. It's rare now? That's news to me.

I had 2 copies of Border Down, one LE and the other standard. Couldn't really get into it so I sold both copies 2 or 3 years ago. I ended up getting close to $350 for the LE and $100 for the standard.

How worthwhile is Dodonpachi. Not the PS2 Daioujou, I mean, the original one?

Well, I suppose the original is donpachi... but how's dodonpachi?

okay 1942:JS is a lot of fun and everything BUT it is also the easiest 19XX game to date. Don't get me wrong, stage 3 and up it actually starts to get pretty hard (though its more cheap hard that plain hard as its hard to see the bullets coming at you) but when I can get past the first two levels without dying (which is unheard of for me when it comes to the series), you can tell the difficulty is on the low end.

And though I knew Capcom wouldn't do it but I would have liked to see the original 1942 as an unlockable.

Just curious but is Omega Five worth the purchase? I kinda dig the demo but it also feels a bit plain which is why I've never been able to pull the trigger on it

Omega 5 is solid. I think it's worth the points.

And granted my research was a year or two ago, but I had a hard time finding Zero Gunner 2 anywhere for a decent price.

Yeah I really enjoyed Omega 5. Very good for a game created specifically for XBLA. Pretty good graphics and music.

It's a little on the easy side, but playing as different characters will switch up the playing style.

Picked up Joint Strike. It's good fun! I can't even remember the last time I played 1942, so I can't gripe about what did and didn't change. About all I remember is the dive bomb/evade move, lol. I agree that it's sometimes hard to see certain type of bullets and enemies, mainly due to the color palette used, but I don't see it as particularly easy or hard. I've doing more bullet hell games recently and this style of shooter isn't really quite like that, so I've been trying to adjust.

So I want to come back into this genre. Used to love playing the vertical shooters in the arcades back in the day, and I still have fond memories of playing Sector Z on the NES.

Where do you guys recommend I begin? It'll be me starting anew, so whichever direction is most fun (and cheapest) would be good ;p.

Gradius V is probably the best place to start, or grab Ikaruga if you have a 360. I can't think of any other good domestic shmups on recent systems, though...
yah but R-Type final sucked... I could barely play it which sux coz it looked so cool.
Eh..

Just saying.. the only people I've seen say that R-Type final sucks.. it was more a case of them sucking at the game.

But really, I'm kind of disappointed about it not being made by Irem.

Naw, I still hate R-Type Final. I tried it a few months after I got into bullet hell shmups and stuff like Under Defeat, and I was still bored as shit. It's so incredibly slow and the AV presentation just isn't exciting enough.

Gradius V though. Now that's a game. Hoo boy.

If you're just starting out or coming back into the fold, R-Type Final is actually not a bad place to start. The slower pace, and less complex level design might bore some players, but with over 100 different ships to select from, many affecting the environment differently, as well as different paths and ways of advancing through each stage, it's a little bit more meaty than some are letting on.

The biggest downsides of the game to me are that you do have to invest a lot of time to unlock the ships and such and if you're not into that kind of grind it will put you off. Also, there is some bug-related/technical/unintentional slow down that shouldn't really affect an old school shmuper much, but it's there.

The R-Type series has always been a methodical, "thinkers'" shooter that relies more on enemy AI and level design than huge bullet patterns or frenetic speeds. As the official last game of the series, the game mostly lives up to it's predecessors--giving fans of the series what they expect without pushing the envelope too much.

Yeah, despite hearing warnings from people about the Dreamcast version of Triggerheart, I still got it when it came out on XBLA. Even at $10 I felt disappointed.

Under Defeat is still my favorite in recent years. I'll never regret paying full price for the LE of it. I'd pay for it all over again, if it made it to XBLA or PSN.

Only reason I don't hate Triggerheart is because, while I was one of the few who accidentally bought the game on the Dreamcast, I did buy the Le, which I sold for a good bit more than I originally paid for it.

Triggerheart is ok. I can't blame a small dev company like Warashi for trying to get some mileage out of it, but I don't think it deserves a PS2 port, either.

Its a cute toy. The game aint that bad and I also enjoy popping in under defeat on my dc and playing a few times with my brother, the bomb effects and sound are awesome.
