Ghost In The Shell 2.0 $10.99

Got this yesterday at Frys for $8.99.
You know, I've never seen it all the way through, didn't care for it when I was younger.

For less than $10, I'll give it another shot.

Thanks OP. I have been holding off just for this price. Ghost In The Shell is great. Not sure about some of the cg stuff, but as long as original is added I am good.

This is worth it because it includes the original version (1080i or not), but GITS 2.0 abso-fucking-lutely sucks ass. They basically redid the entire movie to look like shit. It was all redrawn digitally, no ink and paper whatsoever, so that now the colors, lines, shading, and animation basically have all of the soul completely stripped out, replaced with the same ugly, overly-clean, blocky colored shit that you see on all the shitty digitally-drawn anime on TV these days.

I hate pretty much all anime from about 1999 on (and am very selective about what I like from before that; I ain't no weeaboo), in no small part because of the onset of digital animation (where they draw the cels in Flash and Photoshop and shit). It's really a shame (but a great illustration of the problem) to see GITS (which was a great-looking movie) done this way. I suppose some people probably like the digital look, with all it's sharpness and blocky colors and uniformity and cleanliness, but I really love being able to practically see the grain of the paper. Warmer, realer, and silly as it sounds, just plain more soul.

Never seen it, tempted by the inclusion of the original but one of the Amazon reviewers says the original DVD looks better than the original on this disc. I'll have to think about this one. The original is available for streaming on Netflix but I bet it's the damn dub.

Best Buy had it for 12 at launch and I picked it up. It's not bad but not nearly as good a restoration as what Disney has been doing.

They did essentially digitize everything AND upgrade a lot of the effects which in many instances clash really badly with original.

I really enjoy well-done cel animation. but your argument against digital animation is pretty laughable and poorly thought out. It's obvious that you know little to nothing about the process, but cute that you're still able to take a firm stance despite your ignorance. Par for the course with you, I suppose.

Back on topic, the added CG in GitS 2.0 looks out of place, but the actual clean-up job they did on the animation isn't one of the problems.

After 2-1/2 decades of being an anime fan, I'd have to say DVD & blu-ray are for pansies. You gotta watch it in VHS (not just VHS, but old reused VHS) to be a TRUE anime fan, to get that hardcore, 10th generation copy, "back in the day" look. There's nothing like the grinding sound of a slightly warped section of tape that fills the screen with snow before stuttering back into picture. 1999? That's absolutely modern - it's pre-1990's anime or nothing, you neophyte!

(And for those who don't get it, I'll save you the indignity - I'm being fictitious)

You're being of, relating to, or characteristic of fiction?
Wow never met a person like that!

You're upset that I don't like stupid anime. You have an anime avatar. Surprise, surprise.

Please, tell me why my opinion that digital animation looks like shit is "laughable and poorly thought out." I don't understand "the process"? Who gives a fuck about "the process," it still looks like shit. But really, I'd love to hear a weeaboo anime fanboy with a pink-haired anime girl avatar and Japanese writing squeezed wherever he can find a place to put it explain to me why I've offended his sensibilities with my ignorance about the specifics of the process used to animate cheap, ugly-ass cartoons made for children, and how exactly this relates to me thinking that the result still looks like shit. If you want to explain it, I'd love to still think it looks like shit, but be more informed about the process used to make it so shitty looking. But then I wouldn't be so "cute" anymore, apparently, and I know how important "cute" is to you anime fans.

Actually, I think that pen-and-ink animation looks fucking amazing in HD, and I prefer that whenever it's available. I know you think you're being funny or whatever, but you didn't even remotely address what I was saying. I was talking about the animation itself, not the quality of the home video medium.

But hey, you're being "fictitious," so, I guess I can't argue or reason with you. God, anime really brings out the smart in people.

Hardcore fanboys and fangirls of all things Japanese.

Usually seen eating pocky and ramen, listening to (and singing along with) J-pop music, saying shit like "kawaii chibi baka desu ne~!!," complaining about dubbed anime, lamenting about how they weren't born in Nippon, talking about how they're going to move to Nippon (where they usually dream that they're going to teach English or something, and of course, really fit in and be accepted and finally ACTUALLY BE JAPANESE FOR REAL), un-ironically dressing (and posing) like this and this, wishing that they had Japanese boy/girlfriends, planning for their next anime convention (and designing their anime character costume to wear to said convention), practicing their samurai moves with the $40 katana they bought off eBay, spending hundreds to import figurines of anime characters, trying to convince regular people why anime is so serious, wishing that anime characters were real so they could marry them (just like in that fanfiction they wrote!), drawing anime fanart, and trying to hide their anime porn collections from their parents.

Oh, and they're occasionally seen on forums telling people how "ignorant" and "laughable" and "cute" ("cute" meaning "stupid") they are when someone thinks these cartoons look ugly.

In other words, not the reasonable folk who enjoy an occasional Miyazaki movie or episode of Dragonball here and there, amongst their other interests. These are the hardcore wackos who base their entire lives around all things Japanese.

If you don't like anime why are you posting in a thread about anime?
Because I really like this movie in particular.

Ahh ok. Got ya. Is that weed sittin in dudes lap in the second pic lol

And I will say I think animation ( being shitty or good ) all depends on the artist(s).
Don't get me wrong I love the old stuff. Akira is one my favorite movies, but I also love the cleanness of the digital. To each his own. I just like anime in general. If I like it I watch it, and/or buy it. fuck everyone else lol.

Plus it's better then fucking Spongebob :roll:

BTW, the original Ghost in the Shell movie was done with cel + computer, so you should have every reason to hate the 1995 movie as much as 2.0. Also, how do you even see paper grains on cel? Do you even know what cels are?

All the computer effects of Ghost in the Shell was one of the things that turned me off it when I was younger. :)

I'll re-watch the original this week and 2.0 down the line.
I'm super picky about anime as well, and hope more older titles get released.

Uh, no. I never said I hate, like, 3D GCI crap mixed with 2D animation. I said I hate when they draw 2D "cel" animation digitally (which GITS wasn't, and GITS 2.0 was).

Also, how do you even see paper grains on cel? Do you even know what cels are?
Hurrr, backgrounds, durp durp durp. And not just paper grain, but graininess is present in cel animation, due to the cels being physical objects that are photographed.

What do you people want, comparisons? Alright. Here's the original GITS, looking awesome. Here's GITS 2.0, looking like ass (and note that any graininess you see there is the result of compression artifacts or perhaps even something intentional like a Photoshop filter, not paper or photographic grain; bottom line, it looks quite different). Again: awesome, ugly. Once more: Rad. Fugly.

Edit: Oh shit, you have an anime avatar, too. And it's some sort of prepubescent schoolgirl shit. I'd better not even bother...

*shrug* made a spelling error, although I never implied I was "smart" either. Seeing that I've barely watched anime anymore in the last 10 years, it's probably the video games or mind-numbing office work that's making me stupid.

As for "remotely" addressing what you were saying - first, there's alot of problems with anime (the repetitiveness is what stopped it for me), and your whole computer vs cel argument is just another idiotic argument issue in a long line of idiotic arguments out there about anime.

Second, you started to warn people about the bad restoration (which is a good thing because I'm not too crazy about the new CGI either) and then did not "remotely address" the issue with that nerd rage you started to go into. Good luck with that though.

LMAO! I tend to watch a lot of anime and listen to Japanese music even though I don't understand a damn thing but that's as far as i go and I keep it to myself unless I'm with another anime head. I know exactly what your talking about though and those types bug me a lil bit at times but they're fun to chat with since they know so much random crap. XD

You REALLY seem to hate those types though, do you live in an area with 100's of them or something? Are the walking around with Manga in hand and a sword on their belt, giving you the eye? O_O

Ok, here's the deal:

- GitS 2.0 looks good when it's in traditional 2D.It looks really good, actually. However, the 3D is mediocre and really, really feels out of place (and even crappier) when juxtaposed with the 2D sections.
- The version (1080i... I *guess*) of the original GitS looks fucking terrible... seriously, it is washed out and blurry, even more so than 1080i should indicate (I mean, come on... most high-def broadcast and cable is in 1080i, and that shtill manages to look pretty fantastic). What is even more telling about them not caring about the original is that it has been shoved into the "Bonus Features" section... yea.

Is it worth it at $11? For me... no. I'm not going to support this sort of thing. But if you can get over the jarring transition from stunning 2D to slightly-above-student-work 3D, then go for it.

Well, I don't know why, but I ordered one. Seems they're backordered since my ship date isn't until middle of next month. This is one of those rare movies that I own on VHS, DVD, and now BD. What's wrong with me?

I saw GIS 1.0 10 years ago, one of first anime. Heck, I think it was even on VHS.
I'm getting this (GIS 2.0) and Blood: The Last Vampire for qualify for free shipping.

I think Blood:Vampire (BluRay) for 14.99 is a decent buy. What do you all think?

It's only 45-minutes... eh. Plus, it was $13.99 just a month ago.

Beside the point, dude.

And why are you so knowledgeable and sore about "weeaboos"?
Because I spend a lot of time on the internet, and it's hard to be involved in any sort of geekdom without encountering them. I'm "sore" about them, because they're horrible disgusting losers, like furries. Thanks for asking!

Dated one that just dumped you?
Oh holy shit, zing!!! I'm really owned now!!!

$15 is a bit steep, but to make your deal work it's an excellent choice. Classic Madhouse anime right there. BTW, do NOT waste your time with the series or live action movie. Both were garbage and do the original no justice.

Enough with this insutling back and forth. We're done with that, and the next one that fires off an insult gets some time off from CAG.

(a.k.a. what happened to my vid of Conan overdubbing Blood?)

Tempting, especially since I had considered it earlier at $14.99. Still, may remain content with the original DVD long resident on the shelf.
