FYI LOTRO is going to be Free2Play very soon, buy at your own risk.
Buy at your own risk for $4? I know we're cheap, but come on.

At any rate, I would point out that as a "subscriber" even if it's only for the 30 days that comes with the base game, you get extra character slots, Monster Play, and Turbine Points when the game actually goes F2P. By that I mean you are accorded VIP status if you are still a subscriber when the changeover occurs (sometime this fall, but no date has been announced).

Hmm...I wonder if I should buy Warcraft 3 for the expansion. I *STILL* have my sealed collector's edition launch copy of the game

(Why the frack Blizzard? I'd have preordered Starcraft 2's collector's edition MONTHS ago if not for the fucking DRM)

Yes.

LotRO goes FTP September 10. Picking up a retail box will get you some privileges that you would have to pay to upgrade to. Unfortunately, this is the Shadows of Angmar box which is the least desirable of the 3 retail versions. It will still get you a few upgrades over F2P cheaper than the ingame store costs in beta, but nothing like the Moria or Mirkwood editions would.
