Good RPG Games?

Hey, I NEED a good RPG for the PSP. But i want an RPG that is like FFI or FFII. I dont know the name for this type but i do want a RPG thats like those games. Help? TY

Well obviously FF1 and FF2 for the PSP would be a good bet.

If you don't mind downloading games the original Wild Arms (the PS1 game) is available from the Playstation store for only 6 bucks. It's definitely a good way to get some cheap RPG portable gaming goodness.

Otherwise I'll admit I'm not sure since my PSP rpg collection consists of the strategy rpgs Final Fantasy Tactics and Jeanne D'arc.

I'm sure others will have recommendations on old-school j-rpgs. (j-rpgs stands for Japanese Role Playing Games which are basically menu driven combat with linear plot progression like the old Findal Fantasies.)

you are looking for traditional RPG. Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion is probably as old school as you can get.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is an excellent RPG on the PSP.
If you're a fan of the "Tales of" series you should try Tales of Eternia instead of Tales of the World.
But yeah, those two are kind of not the traditional types of jRPG. If you want random battles and an almost interesting storyline feel free to go with Brave Story

my personal favorites would be:
Breath of Fire 3
FFT: War yatta yatta
and Jeanne D'arc

However, I dont think my style, fits into your style. more JRPG tactical, rather then just RPG.

I don't think Breath of Fire 3 ever came out in the US (not as far as gamespot,IGN, and Wikipedia say) so if you live in the US it might be slightly harder to find this game.
Also Final Fantasy Tactics is a very punishing and complicated game and if you haven't played many strategy RPG's before I recommend you try Disgaea if you're interested in trying the Genre (I'm not sure about Jeanne D'arc since I haven't played it)

A second vote here for Disgaea: AoD. It hasn't left my PSP since I bought it. I'm at 51 hours playtime right now.

BOF3 is fairly easy to find, some gamestops have them from trade in, or ebay is a really easy way to get it.

Disgaea... is too good for words to describe.

*runs to computer*

Strategy wise, can't go wrong with the previously mentioned Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics. It really doesn't get any better then those.

The only traditional turn based type I can think of worth playing are Final Fantasy I & II and Tales of Eternia (I'd sell my copy).

I have played the following:
Gurumin
Jeanne D'arc
Disgaea
Tales of Eternia
Brave Story
Tear of Vermillion

I will only recommend the first four. :D Jeanne D'arc and Disgaea are a must!!!! :D

Only problem with Disgaea: AoD is that your characters only gain EXP when they kill an enemy...this makes leveling healers and such extremely difficult/time consuming. Personally, wait for Crisis Core, it's shaping up to be a great game.

Yeah leveling healers in Disgaea is pretty tedious...
I have played about 45 hours of the japanese version of Crisis Core and I will say that it is as great as everyone hopes it is. my one problem with it is that leveling up and summons are dictated by a slot machine system so leveling up and doing summons is completely random.

What? So wait...how exactly is leveling up handled? Say i kill X number of enemies netting me X EXP. If the slot machine doesn't level me up, do i lose the EXP? Or do i just have to do another battle and hope the slot machine works in my favor?

To those of you recommending Disgaea, are you guys recommending it because you're die hard fans of the PS2 original or beause it's actually worth playing?

Disgaea 2 left a bad taste in my mouth... it was the same basic game as the first one.:whistle2:|

If you have looked at the screenshots for crisis core you will notice the slot machine thing at the top left. when you're fighting it keeps spinning and will every now and then stop. there are two things on the slots, faces and numbers. if you get 3 of the same face you perform their summon attack, and if you get 3 number 7's you will level up.

How good is Gurumin? I've been eyeing it for a long ass time now... also, how is Brave Story? I've been eyeing that one too. I find that the only system I currently enjoy RPGs on are portables.

Have your Healer create a mage (preferably star) and when you're on the battlefield, position your mage and healer right next to each other. Masters can learn their pupil's magic. Once you have your healer's star magic to level one, you dont have to position them next to each other anymore.

It has a good story and some lovable characters. It's kinda of easy though (iirc there's also a hard mode) and it's somewhat short. I beat it in 13 hours. :/ Imo brave story was very cheesy, "zomg, you're a traveler!!!!!!111!!!". I'd stay far away from that....:whistle2:|

I'm actually enjoying Brave Story (more than half-way done) a lot. It has stunning graphics on the PSP, cool cast of characters, and good dialogue (also not too- cliche storyline). It's a top notch JRPG, but those random enemy encounters get annoying fast (I guess it comes with the genre). Brave Story is not cheesy or kiddy at all (despite first impressions). There are a lot of mature themes throughout.

Brave Story: New Traveler
Breath of Fire III (Euro Import)
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Final Fantasy (If you like the original one and don’t already own it, best version)
Final Fantasy II (If you liked II before and don’t already own it, best version)
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of Lions
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure
Jeanne D’ Arc
Monster Hunter Freedom
Monster Hunter Freedom 2
Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner (I personally love it, but not for everyone)
PoPoLoCrois (I personally love it, but not for everyone)
Princess Crown (Asia Import)
Riviera: The Promised Land
Tales of Eternia (Euro Import)
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (The dungeon exploring may turn some off, but combat is fun)
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Wild Arms PS1 download
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

I have to agree. Even though we have just two TV's at the house I find it hard to sit down on the big screen and play RPG games. The psp or even Ds/GBA I can take with me and knock a few hours out a lot more frequently.... which keeps me fresh with the story and all.

I have been playing Jeanne D'Arc like mad. The wife has even made comments about how addicted I am. Its been a while since I have had an RPG hook me like this one. I think the last true TPG I played through was legend of Dragoon for PS1 late in the cycle.

I am looking forward to trying a few of these others... Popo locrois had me interested to a small degree.

I too have been hooked on Jeanne D'Arc!

Finished Fire Emblem on the Wii three months ago, and picked up FF Tatics for Christmas because I felt like my PSP was just collecting dust. But was very disappointed with the game play.

Than last weekend, picked up Jeanne D'Arc and I can't put it down!

I haven't bought a PSP games in 2007, expect FF Tactics,
but thanks to Jeanne D'Arc, this past weekend alone picked up 5 PSP games!

My love for the PSP has returned ^^

I agree, Jeanne D'arc is easily one of the best PSP games out there. Heck, I dont usually enjoy playing strategy type games, however, this game was the total package (story, graphics, gameplay). Its also very accessible to newbs to this genre (like myself:))
Anybody played Dungeon Explorer : WotAA (or the import version), yet? Do you guys think it's a good blind-buy?
No. I tried it and it was on eBay within minutes :(

I noticed no one mentioned Kingdom of Paradise. Granted, it's more action than RPG but it's still a damn good game and it's pretty old so you can get it cheap now probably. Also, IMO, stay away from Astonishia Story. I can usually play through most RPGs regardless of quality but I just couldn't do it with that game. *shudders*

I actually enjoyed Astonishia Story!

That was the first RPG game I finished on the PSP!

whatever you do:
DO NOT PLAY THE "LEGEND OF HEROES" GAMES!
They will make you appreciate the $2 they give you to trade it back in.
