I was recently given an assignment in my ITK 160 (Information Technology) class to ask 20 people what their favorite online search engine was, between Google and Yahoo. Since I'm lazy, and I am on here way too much, I figured you guys would be a good group to target. So, which one do you prefer to search with? Oh, and I need to know why you like one better than the other...and I'll throw a poll up there, even though it's mostly the "why" that I need...

Google because its simple yet effective and no annoying ads or anything and it just seems to work alot better.

google, because i don't have to go through all the extra services that Yahoo tries to throw at you on the main page. It's a nice and easy to use interface without extra bullshit.

I prefer Google....it's simple and highly functional, like all webpages should be. Everything is laid out in the most idiot proof fashion possible and there is no clutter whatsoever.
Yahoo, on the other hand, looks like a complete chaotic mess in comparison. Everything that yahoo has on it's front page is condensed into various links on google.

yahoo, because its my homepage and everything is all together, very nice and simple. didnt google get in trouble over getting paid to put certain sites at the top of the search list too?

I use Yahoo because I can get a click glimpse of what's happening around the world while I'm surfing the net. Yahoo Finance also keeps me coming back, with a financial terms glossary, stock portfolio tracker, news articles, etc.

Google, only because I have Gmail and use the google.ig customizeable homepage thing. It's more convenient for me.

Why would that be illegal
Google Images is the best porn site on the 'Net!
This is the main reason why I use google over yahoo .
Google.

Firefox has the toolbar, its got no distractions and an easier interface. I can't think of anybody who has used yahoo since 1998.
This is the second.

I picked google because thats what I use most often for general searches.

At work however I use Yahoo. Because I check the financials and the news.

At least I'm not the only one. ;)

Google, since they're a search engine branching into other areas, instead of Yahoo, who started out being a search engine, turned into other things, forgot they're a search engine, and now they're trying to get back to being a search engine.

google - 17
yahoo - 3
Yep. I'm not really going to use the poll though. I just wanted you guys to know how it's looking. I'm actually going to take 20 posts from users that have given me a reason why they like one better than the other...so keep 'em coming guys!

Oh, and thanks to all of you who are helping me out!

i use google for searching because it loads faster and isnt full of ads and crap that i dont want to see .... i do use yahoo for other things, like fantasy sports

Well i use Yahoo for a few reasons. #1 reason is because my main e-mail account is with yahoo.

Secondly, because yahoo is my source of news, i prefer having the news bar with photos on the side, and it does keep me in touch with worldly events since i dont watch TV, dont read the newspaper and dont listen to the radio. In fact i end up knowing more about current events then alot of my peers this way.

Another thing which ties into the news thing is sports. When im on campus i can go to yahoo, click the sports link and have a box score of any game on ^^

Oh yeah, and i hate google because i always end up going to goggle.com(j/k but i did go there once thanks to a typo :))

That's pretty much it. I read news sites as well, but when I want a news site I go to CNN or MSN. When I want a search engine, that's all I want. Most people have their homepage as a search engine, and I want my homepage to load as quickly as possible. Google is my homepage at work, and I don't have a homepage set for home.

The main reasons I prefer Google...

I always prefer it when I get as many hits back as possible. For example, when I put cheapassgamer in both engines (using standard search), this is what I get...

Yahoo - 80,700 results
Google - 279,000 results

Another example, my username GuilewasNK...

Yahoo - 728
Google - 1880

Sometimes more isn't better, but with a search engine I prefer having as many hits as possible, then I can narrow it down myself as I refine the search.

Google, now via BLINGO.

But, to be accurate, I only use Google for web searches. I use Yahoo for news and image searches. For some reason, Yahoo image search is so much better then google's.

google for searches. I don't want banner ads and a million different categories when I am searching for something.

I use yahoo sometimes for news, mail and movie stuff

No.

And google's the best search engine by far (because of pagerank - now that was a great idea). Most anybody who uses yahoo to search only does it because they use other features (yahoo mail, etc). But there's no excuse - even if your browser doesn't support google searches "natively" there's always the google toolbar.
