Graphing calculators...

I am looking for a deal on a graphing calculator, and also some advise on which to get.

The math prof says to get a TI-86, which is NOT required because it isn't available locally (and is actually discontinued. But the math dept banned the TI-89 and TI-92.

The math prof said something about casio calculators, which are not used by the math dept and therefor neither recommended not banned.

Is there a different brand that is comparable to a TI-86, with similar buttons or functions?

So, uh, what should I buy, how cheap can I get it, and how fast can I get it?

Ill tell you this much, I had a casio and they were a bit more user friendly and I was able to follow with my TI bretherin after playing with it for a while. Plus mine was a color with a rockin tetris game.

I believe the TI-83/4 is universal for most (if not all) math classes. Which math class are you taking that you haven't already needed a calculator? I got my first graphing calc in Algebra 1...

damn, banning the ti-89 platinum? Ridiculous. That thing helped me, however you still need to show work so I never understood why the hell theyd ban calculators.

get a ti-89 regular edition, scratch off the 9, replace with 6....your professor will probable be looking out for the titaniums, so he wont even notice

btw, if your class allows it, get a HP49G, they're technologically more advanced than the 89s but have a longer learning curve

Up until now I was doing it all in my head.

I can still do the calculus and physics in my head, but the professors insist that everyone needs a calculator. Plus, with my massive workload, it might shave a bit of time off of the math and science homework.

Anyways, I have a TI-84 Silver (i'm in statistics), and it works just fine. Don't see why you would need more (except for the fact that the games for the ti-89's are f-ing AMAZING!)

Yeah, I'd second the TI-84. If you can, try to talk to the people at the math department. Our dept. also banned the 89-Titanium, but I just talked to the head and showed him valid points of why it should be kept, and he un-banned it. Try it; you've got nothing to lose.

Sorry to hear about no TI-89s. My college is all about them. My math prof has even written his own OS for the TI-89 that makes it easy to actually solve problems with it.

what makes the ti-89 bannable?

I had the ti-84 and thought it was bad ass. I had hella games on it. I remember countless math classes playing gang wars, super mario bros., snake, pong, my baseball season I had going, (made it about half way through the season or about 90 games) and my favorite was the outlaw racing.

I agree wholeheartedly about the HP calculators. I used to have a TI-82 back in the day, and finally upgraded to a HP48GX. Quite a learning curve, but a great calculator if you can get used to the RPN.

IMO though, any old graphing calculator will be fine. Odds are that you won't need to use a quarter of the functions on a TI-89. If you are actually going to do that sort of "hardcore" math stuff, MATLAB and Mathematica are probably better options anyway.

Check pawnshops. I still brag about the deal I found on a TI-85 back in the day (think it was a TI-85). $9 at a local pawn shop... They wanted $19, but I talked 'em down. Still had some girl's name written on it (clearly stolen, hehe). The key to pawnshop shopping is to hope that they don't know what they're selling you.
Ive got a very good condtiion TI-86 with original book.
Asking $40 shipped if youre interested. Will also consider trades.
i say go for this one

I don't think its about games I think it is about having a calculator that can do way too much of the work

to bad 89 is banned. I have one of them and they rock. They do a lot of stuff automaticly that the 83/84 you have to do manualy.

at office depot this week they have a back to school sale where you get a free Ti graph calculator value of 100 IF you spend 100 or more on "already-on-sale" school supply. I'd say jump on it and hump it like a human leg dawg;)
