About Touch Detective
They're easy enough to play without a faq. I would say play in order because you'll get more out of two if you know the characters since it's one of the stronger points of the game. But there's nothing story wise that connects the two games so you can skip straight to two if you wanted.
Most reviews I read said that the Touch Detective games have illogical puzzles and event triggers, which sounded too frustrating for me. Would you say it's been mischaracterized?

I disagree. Touch Detective has some really bad puzzles that make really no sense. The puzzle is bad in a sense that you wont be able to figure out what to do easily by just clicking around. It is very frustrating if you dont use some kind of faq. If the adventure gene isnt so dead I would not recommend the game. If you must try might as well get the first game to see if you like it.

I thought Contact was horrid. Anyone looking for a copy I have a mint and complete in my list. Still has teh shine!

I wouldn't descirbe Touch Detective as illogical. It follows a logic but like most adventure games it's a logic of their own creation and not real world logic, if that makes any sense. Take one of the puzzles in the first game (solution spoiler not story spoiler)
you take an air pump and you pump up one of the characters in the game and pop them in order to catch a thief.
By real world convention you would obviously never consider doing this but in video game logic this sort of thing makes absolute sense. If you ever played an adventure game before you should have no problem with it.

$19.99 for Ontarama is a pretty good price (I picked it up for $29.99 when it came out). It's a cute and fun music rhythm game, but the difficulty ramps up and it becomes ridiculously difficult on hard. The one problem I had with the game is how much you have to keep track of on the screen (the moving arrows, the colored ontama to touch and the black ontama to avoid). Normal mode is fun, but hard mode is just gonna frustrate most people.

Izuna is hard and quite unforgiving, so you'll have to level grind and keep a good stock of items in the storehouse. Things are random and there are times where you'll just die because luck was not on your side on a level of a dungeon. If you don't mind level grinding, building up a stock of powerful weapons (which takes a heck of a long time to do) and like straight-up dungeon crawling, it's a fun game.
What are general opinions on devil summoner, considering it is the only affordable SMT game. Is it significantly worse tham nocturne/DDS (which I have yet to play)
If you want a SMT go for Persona 3. Best one IMO.

Haven't played Devil Summoner myself, but now that it dropped I plan to :)

Damn, Rule of Rose and DDS2 both dropped... I bought both around the BF B2G1F sale- could've saved $10.

Oh well, not too big of a deal I guess. I might have to pick up Steambot Chronicles at that price though.

it's such a shame not many people here liked contact. Granted, it was something completely different, but it was far from being a bad game. IMO, it was one of the better games released by atlus on the ds, and one of the better games to own period on the ds.

I think the thing with most people (or at least me) was that they were expecting it to be Earthbound because of the way it looked and from the previews. And when it came out, it just wasn't.

I played and games like King Quest and most of Lucas Art adventure game and beat most of them only using faq a few times. Couldnt do that with touch detective. I would say that it is illogical in a sense that you often have to do to an unrelated place to use that unrelated item to move on. Even experience adventure gamer will have trouble.

could it really be as illogical as say, The Longest Journey?

I think one of the best part is doing things that you rarely can do in other RPGs. From fighting in department store, entering video game world, having girlfriend join you on your boat, to killing random people for items. The battle system could be a bit better but it never bother me. It is sad that people saw the top screen and think earthbound but get disappointed at the end.

Izuna can be unforgiving. I spent dozens of hours leveling up a weapon and an accessory only to die and lose them forever. I haven't played it since. I was on the last dungeon too.

Many of these Atlus games are totally subjective; you will either love or hate this game. Some might like these unusual game play perspective, while others will hate it for being too different.

great if you can buy with the coupon book for $5 off any PS2,GC, XBox game 12.99 or higher I don't see these in store any more?

the main thing is Atlus is only the publisher, aside from the SMT games none of those games were developed by Atlus. For example Riviera is made by Sting while Steambot Chronicles is made by Irem.

I think the coupon book was a Black Friday promotion only - I assume they won't be reprinting more copies for us to abuse. (sigh)

Thanks for posting this TC. I was wondering how you were able to find these games on Gamestop's Web site?

For example, I do a search for "steambot" or "metal saga" and these games don't come up. When I look for "Rpgs" under PS2, these games don't come up. What's the trick, or at least, what am I doing wrong. (The direct links work, I know, but there are other games I'm interested in but can't find them on the GS's site)

Thanks for any help.

Edit> Just realized if I googled "game name" and "gamestop" the direct link comes up. duh. this has been bothering me for months as I've tried to track down harder-to-find used games.

dude its hit or miss. this girl at gs gave everyone who bought anything on bf 1 or even 2 coupon books. some other gs/eb still have the box near damn full. i'm sure if you throw at least a preorder their way you can score one, or you can try trading for some also http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159166

I have been refused of those coupon books from two stores and another store was oos on those. Is anyone having any luck finding these games instore? I been to 3 and haven't really found any of the PS2 and PSP Atlus games. I need to check another one out, it may have Metal Saga.

To contrast this harsh critique, I will state that I am a seasoned veteran of many adventure games in the genre, including old favorites such as Maniac Mansion and newer classics such as Sam & Max. And I have finished these merely by using my own ingenuity and wit, without the consultation and aid of any supplementary documentation.

The contradicting point is that I found Touch Detective to be a delightfully simple adventure game. You see, the trick of the game is that it is played through the perspective of an adventurous and inquisitive little girl. I can see why some people would say that these puzzles make no logical sense. It is because they have lost their childish imagination. The solutions to each puzzle are very charming, and meant to bring a chuckle to your lips as your amusement wells up. In a way, it is similar to earlier LucasArts endeavors with a rubber chicken.

If enough attention is paid during your perusal through the game, and if you open your heart and let your inner child out, Touch Detective will live up to its name and touch your soul, helping you to find a warmth that is lacking in many games outside of this genre.

One the great things about GS/EB is you can search inventory on their Web site. Just punch in zip code and radius and it'll show what stores have that game in stock. And it's very accurate. (There are separate searches for new and used versions).

Local store had the game and no case/manual for Devil Summoner.

They did have a new copy. It scanned at $19.99. I used the 10% coupon for $2 off. :D

gutted?
You know, I was considering Rule of Rose when it came out, but I heard it was panned. Anyone think it's worth the $18?
Rule of Rose is an average game. The story is excellent, the sound is fairly nice, but the gameplay was pretty bad. The controls and combat were whack.

I played it because I liked the story, but some puzzles annoy me.

Worth it at $18 new, but used? Hmm... Maybe, if you like those types of games. Then again, the game can be frustrating and makes you feel you wasted time with it.
gutted?
Of course ;)

I have seen new copies of Devil Summoner at several GS the last few weeks. I figured most of them only have 1 or maybe 2 copies, my chances of getting a sealed copy aren't guaranteed. They have enough trouble stocking new copies of 1 month old Atlus games.

did you ask if they had sealed ones in the back? my friend told me usually they do but b/c they are lazy they will just sell the display one and gut another one later.

No, I didn't. Good to know. I will do that next time. I wasn't too ticked because I am going to open it anyway.

What ticked me off was that they put the new sticker on the cover slip. Like inside the plastic, on the cover slip. Luckily, I got it off without any ripping or residue.

Yeah, I've noticed some stores doing that with used games, putting the sticker on the spine on the cover slip. That coupled with some GS locations near me seem to use cheaper stickers that don't peel off well = me not shopping there. I'd be even more annoyed if it was on a new game.

Opinions vary wildly on Contact. Some people love it and some people hate it. Ditto for Izuna but to a much lesser extent. That's a good price for either of those if you're at all curious.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but is Ontamarama even a month old? Jesus Christ that must've sold poorly to drop so quick. (Good for me though)

thanks op, i do NOT recommend contact, i looked forward to it so much since i think it was done by some of the ppl who did earthbound, but i was very disappointed :whistle2:\....it had the same quirky charm, but the gameplay annoyed me..stella deus did not catch me either, i regret paying the $50 for it at release...i am very curious about touch detective and izuna :)

yea as much crap as gs/eb gets on here for gutting games, if i am going to play it then i dont really care. putting the sticker on the inside art is jacked up though, the worst is when its on the manual! lame!!!!

I gotta stop buying these Atlus games I never play--my reflex is to buy them just incase they get rare and when I finally want to play one it's $100 on ebay. But they really haven't had supply problems since Disgaea and they reprinted that eventually.

My feelings on the games I've played, hopefully it'll help some people make a decision on these:

Rule of Rose - I bought this two months ago at a much higher used price and I definitely thought it was worth the price. If you had liked "Haunting Ground" it is nearly the same thing where you control a girl and her dog friend in a spooky setting with monsters looking to kill you and your attempting to solve minor puzzles while collecting things. Haunting Ground feels like it was Rule of Rose's sequel, but it's not. If you don't know Haunting Ground, then if you like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Clock Tower 3 or Fatal Frame then you'll probably like this as well. It's a very basic girl in a scary place game, but this ones theme is demented girls that will cause your death if you don't appease them every month with tribute. You go around a scary airship trying to piece together the mystery of why you are there and what is really going on here. Before I bought the game, I have read where some people found disgust with the game over the premise of the little girls brutally tormenting one another as well as to small animals to such sadistic degrees, but when I actually played the game, I honestly did not see what was the big deal. So if you are one of these people who lives in an imaginary world and believe little girls are all sweet and innocent, then this game will probably offend you. For those who are smarter, one can say this game is brilliant for the same reasons, by relating it to the "Lord of the Flies". I've only got half way though the game, so I really cannot comment about the story to that degree yet, but I can see where people would think that. I'd say it's worth a cheap price, then again I believe that Clock Tower 3 is a great game worth the 34.99 that I had paid when most do not like it even at 9.99, so that take as you will.

Touch Detective 1 and 2.5 - I fully enjoyed these two games. If you are into detective games like Phoenix Wright, Trace Memory, and Hotel Dusk 215 as well as liking the humor in such games as Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits and Sprung, then you'll probably like this game as well. If you don't like those games, then avoid this one. The animation is gothic and noir, but if that is the sort of thing that pleases you, then you'll probably be disappointed as it's VERY CUTE which is one of the things that goth and noir does not resemble! I bought it expecting it to be a dark and gloomy Sherlock Holmes-ish game, but I was surprised that it was really a light-hearted game. Basically you control this girl solving really small time cases. It's nothing major, but it's a real help to your friends in the game who seems to have more personality than you do. It has a certain "Green Acres" charm where you're placed in a world where everything and everyone around you is wacky, but the kicker is that your character doesn't seem to care at all about anything odd at all. I think this is the main downfall of the game is that the main character really does need to react properly for the player to enjoy the game. Maniac Mansion or Day of the Tentacle has characters that would react to the craziness, but here she's part of the craziness and it's really not as fun. The humor has a certain charm that few would get. A bit dry and British. The puzzles are easy in the way you just go and click everything on your list on everyone. Sometimes one just forgets about the plot and story and minor details about the characters you meet, which does cause people to question why this item should be going to this person, but everything does hold up pretty well if had been paying attention, which is probably hard to do unless you are really focused and don't bore easily. I personally only needed to look for a FAQ once to find 1 missing touch item to complete the list on the first game. And remember if you find a hole be sure to say, "King Midas has a donkey's ears" in it. I had to look that one up to get the joke. Dry intelligent humor moments like those really makes games such as these two worth while for me.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Another game that I bought for a high price and I loved it. Sadly it's another game that I put down halfway though to play another game and yet to pick it back up. Basically I found it to be another Shadow Hearts-like game. Basically the same controls, same type of setting, same type of monsters. If they slapped Shadow Hearts 5 on this, I would have not really noticed the difference other than a few minor things that is more SMT-ish than SH. It's a retro-futureistic noir RPG where you have the 1930s or so past mixed with impossible 2000-ish and beyond inventions. You spend a lot of time raising and upgrading demons (some pretty sexy ones I may add), fight lots of random battles unless you have the potions to shoo away that sort of thing. It does go on and on unless you have a game enhancer to even out the dull parts like getting money to upgrade and buy supplies. One of the things that people DETEST about this game is the modern real life references to this game. For example several NPCs will spout off music lyrics and unless you are into modern rock you probably will never notice this, but if you are, you'll probably turn sour over these. Another which had me sour for days was where a demon car who only comes out on a full moon rips off Sailor Moon and says something much like her "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you" speech to you. If that sort of thing bothers you (and I've seen where it bothered quite a few people), then stay far away from this game. But if you are a big fan of the Shadow Hearts series, then please give this a try.

Riviera: The Promised Land PSP - I just bought this one used a couple days before Thanksgiving as I waited months and months for a price drop and I did not want some idiot buying it on Black Friday. I really wanted the game because I had heard it had anime girls in it which you basically need to do dating sim-like things in order for them to do more cute things for you, much like in Azure Dreams for the PSX. I've not really played this game too deeply yet, but it's another really cute game right off the bat and it definitely is way cute when you get to the girls. But I was turned off by the point system that it uses. You earn movement points for scoring really well in battle, ok that's good, but it's one where you'll want a FAQ in front of you because there are far more movement options than points you'll ever earn. You'll end up wasting those points most of the time and some events are necessary to open up better endings and to get my anime babes to like me that much more. I really cannot tolerate those types of trickery games where I have two female friends with me, one tells me to investigate a bush, the other one says not to, and then I decide to investigate it, the bush explodes and then both girls looses their respect for me. ARRG! Restarting the game to do the right thing would mean that I will loose an hour or so of prior battles. That's when I stopped playing the game, as I know I could not put up with this for very long without the online help. I do have to say that the main reason to get this if you already have the GBA version is the full dialog speech. That is more than worth it, as it's a very humorous and cute dating game at times mixed with your RPG "action". I quote action as it's not really full of action at all. You move to the next grid, battle, investigate, and repeat that over and over. For one that hates stopping to battle every 5 steps in a normal RPG adventure, this one is really taxing my patience. The voice acting is on par to most of the better comedy anime dubs you'll find. I've read that there is only 1 new dungeon in this edition and the artwork has been redone. Of note there are the naughty bath scenes that others on different forums seem obsessed to get, but they find it next impossible to unlock a certain one with the PSP controller. So it's basically 1 guy and something like 7 girls, and you have to do all sort of things to impress them, ALA "Azure Dreams", but thankfully it's much better than that game, but sadly "Thousand Arms" is probably better in the action department over this one. The plot is something about these angels that was sent to destroy the land of Riviera's Guardian for some reason which the main boy (who's a wingless angel and hated for that reason by his fellow angels) knows nothing about. Of course he's a rookie and knows nothing about anything and is a level 1 fighter. In the battle against the guardian he falls though a vortex, looses his memory and end ups in a town with various girls and has to do things to hopefully regain his memory and learn more about Riviera, obviously to be it's savior or something, all the while impressing the girls to get one of the various endings with the girl he impresses the most. It's a really slow RPG, so I'd probably avoid it unless you really want to explore the dating sim aspect in it which I obviously do when I have a lot of free time to devote into this game.

Those are the only ones I played on the last. The others really did not seem to appeal to me from the images or box descriptions. I do want to know about Contact though. I've seen such mixed reviews on it, but none that really went into detail why they had liked or disliked it. I understand that it may look like Earthbound (Mother), but it's nothing like it. That's not a big deal for me as I really did not care much for that game. So what makes it suck? What makes it good? No one seems to be willing to back their statements with a proper discussion. I have no idea what the story is about or what game is out there that it can be compared to. I've only the vague notion that it's somehow about alternate planes of reality where your actions on one plane effects what happens in another and thus causes some amusing things to happen, which gives it humor and charm, I suppose. So could anyone really take the time to tell me more about this game? I really would appreciate it, even if it's your hatred for the game. Thanks!
Speaking of Disgaea, I still wanna know why the hell it's $40 used.
I think the Atlus store has it for $30 new.

Fairyland, thank you very much for your thorough insights.

I can tell that you put quite a bit of thought into your comments simply by reading through them. As recommendations go, you've sold me on Riviera and Rule of Rose - two titles that I have ignored so far (to my regret it seems). Devil Summoner I already own, and the Touch Detective games I'll have to pass on for now as I don't yet have a DS. I truly appreciate you going the extra mile for your fellows here.

Agreed. I don't get all the hate. The only thing I didn't like about it was that if you tried to complete the item list you needed to level grind for like twice as long as the game itself took to complete. It wasn't paced well in that regard (especially considering the small payoff to getting all the items - just the sense of completion ;)). I beat it but didn't bother getting everything.

About Metal Saga, I'm pretty sure I bought a new copy at GS about a year ago for $19.99. And Steambot was available at TRU for $10 a while back. I almost didn't get it but I'm glad I did if everyone thinks a used copy for $13 is a great deal ;).

What I might get from these drops: Riviera, Touch Detective 2 1/2, and SMT Devil Summoner if I can find it new (assuming it will be $19.99? Edit - see that someone said it was, now just to find one!)
I think the Atlus store has it for $30 new.
Thought it was $20. Either way, that's why I ask anyways. Atlus still publishes it and sells it through their site. There's not that big of demand for the game anymore.

What the crap? :(

Humm, Touch Detective 2 ½ and Ontamarama for $19.99 new sounds good to me.

As for the Gamestop putting stickers on case-inserts; I heard about it early this year, but hoped it would never happen in my area.

Then I noticed them doing it when I used that $5 off cupon on used games. At least it peeled off fine for me, but I wonder why on earth have they started doing this...
did you ask if they had sealed ones in the back? my friend told me usually they do but b/c they are lazy they will just sell the display one and gut another one later.
It takes far more work to gut a new copy than it does to sell a sealed one.

When I was talking about Atlus, I was including both published and developed games. I wish they were better on selection process on published games. They could've of selected super robots series, sega ages dragon force or Langrisser series.

Seconded.

You sold me on the Touch Detectives. I was fairly confident I wouldn't like them, but now think that I would, and that I really shouldn't miss them.

"King Midas has a donkey's ears" FTW! I guess I'll give Touch Detective a shot then. I just don't see enough obscure references to ancient civilizations in games nowadays.

Riviera is a lot of fun if you go in understanding that it is like no other RPG out now. It is more of a interactive novel with beautiful backgrounds then a traditional RPG. Is this what visual novels are like in Japan?

Steambot Chronicles is a less violent version of Grand Thief Auto but with mechs. There is a whole world of stuff to do and you aren't forced to follow the plot if you don't want to. You do have to progress the story sometimes to unlock certain minigames and side quests but that's it. Once I have more time I'm gonna get back to this game.

I've heard Rule of Rose has terrible game mechanics so I've stayed away. I was kinda interested in the story so did some searching and it turns out there is a complete walkthrough on youtube. I would recommend just to watch that if you don't want to deal with the awful controls. The final boss was especially fucked up.
