FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.
Gamestop changes prices up and down frequently on games, so it's really hard for the CAG database to be completely accurate unless we had someone who worked at Gamestop update each morning when they print out price adjustments. I would have been more than happy to do that, but I no longer work for the company and no longer associate myself with Gamestop at all.

The extra 50% credit is a good deal, but knowing Gamestop they will lower every games TIV and the extra 50% won't be that big of a deal anymore. I've seen them do this kind of stuff many times before when I worked there. They love to make things appear to be a killer deals, but then they manipulate the prices to even out the deal to where they still make some money.
Okay I keep hearing that they lower the TiV on everything when they run these promos and it just isn't true. Heck they are ALWAYS running a promo.

Now the only ones I believe it happens is when a game is trading in at 5.25 and then promo of 5 dollar min then often the trade in will drop to $5

Yes the trade in values of some of the higher priced games will drop, but did you expect ME2 to trade at $35 forever? heck even without this 50% promo I expected ME2 to drop in TiV in a week either way. In reality ME2 would have a TiV of 30 or 25 by March with or without a promo.

Damnit CAGs, no one told me this when I was trading my ME2 yesterday. Had to cancel and feel shitty about it.

Does GameStop require the cerberus code?

Updated lists and database. Hope people don't get tired of seeing these messages. It's just the easiest way for me to tag where I'm at.

Hey sorry if this was already mentioned. But what the hells the point of the extra 25% trade in credit towards preordering select games such as FF13, God of War 3, etc. If it does not stack with 50%?

They both expire on the same day. Is gamestop trying to rip people off who preorder these games? Why wouldn't you take the 50% trade in credit? Stupid promotion.

I decided to ditch a bunch of stuff I haven't touched in a while. Some of the pricier stuff, I know I can always re-buy later when the prices have dropped considerably (Borderlands, Mass Effect 2). Listed below are my base values from today. The only thing that seems to have changed versus what is already listed in the first post is Bourne Conspiracy (and only by 25 cents).

360

Bourne Conspiracy - $3.25 (25 cent drop from list)
GTA IV - $4
GTA IV: Episodes from Liberty City - $15
Mass Effect 2 - $35

PS3

Call of Duty: World at War - $12.75
Burnout Paradise - $6.50
Borderlands - $23.25
Far Cry2 - $6.25
Guitar Hero: Van Halen - $7 (disc-only, 'not for resale' but they didn't mind)
Guitar Hero 5 - $15
Ninja Gaiden: Sigma - $5.75
Orange Box - $6.50
Resistance 2 - $10
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Sith Edition - $12

I worked for the company for 5 years and they don't alter values on every game, but when they run a promo like this. A lot of newer releases like ME2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, etc. will drop in TiV about $10 - $15.

And no I don't expect ME2 to trade for $35 forever and in my case it will never be traded. Honestly if you want a good value you for trades, I suggest doing it right here with the CAG community or using a service like Goozex.

360
Tomb Raider Anyy - 2.25
Marvel Ultimate /Forza 2 - 2.50
Ninja Blade - 6.50
Civ Rev - 6.75
Bully 8.00

Traded that garbage (sans Civ Rev) for NBA 2K10. Bully was the worst game I ever bought.

obviously, 95% of the people that bought the game new are going to use the code if at all possible.

and its not like GameStop could check if the code was used in the first place. You could have torn the paper off and just say "i don't have live, i just wanted to see what it looked like"
So @ those who traded ME2, did they require the Cerberus code?
Of course not. The entire point of the Cerberus Network is to offer content to people who bought it new. Anybody who buys it used needs to assume the code is already redeemed, even if the card is included.

...and be delighted if they try to redeem it and it actually works.

Every now and then, I've found unused codes for various things inside used games, but if my memory serves me correctly, the first thing Mass Effect 2 does when you put it in is ask for your Cerberus code.

Does a sharkport for the PS2 have any trade in value? I still have the box & cds along with the cables. If not I'll probably trash it.
So @ those who traded ME2, did they require the Cerberus code?
I don't see how that would even be possible. I think 90% of the people that got the game used the code. This type of thing is going to require a new policy for accepting trade ins.
no, thats been around for weeks and weeks. a better question would be "why didn't they just end that promotion the day the new one started"?
Oh its been around for weeks. Didn't know. That makes sense. They should just end it now that everything is 50% extra credit.

Has anyone traded Heavy Rain in? I'm wondering if it would make sense to buy Heavy Rain new and use the 25% off coupon, combined with edge, to buy Mass Effect 2 used with it. Then go to another gamestop and trade both Heavy Rain and ME2 in.
ask them if you could buy back your own copy, but that'll flag them and they'll flat out say no, even if they have no idea why you're doing it.
i did this back when it was the trade 5 ds/psp games coupon. i traded in mario kart (DS) and said oh i wanted to buy it back, made a few bucks profit from it.

although i did tell them it was just so i could hit the five game minimum on the coupon, and i didn't get any grief for it.

lol trade in a game on its release date :bouncy:
TIV for ghostsbusters is $6. Whoever reported it at 25 cents is a douche and not funny.
I don't know about 25 cents, but there was a time a few weeks ago when the TIV was definitely sub $1, confirmed by many, many people.
Dude, just return your Heavy Rain New. Get all your money back.
I'm not one who has bad feelings toward GS, in fact I've been treated quite well by them, so I'm inclined not to rip them a third, and that's what that seems like. A bit too much for me.

For the 360 or the PS3 version, confoosious? I have the 360 version sitting there that I decided to keep because 25 cents would have been a huge rip off. If it's actually 6 bucks I might make another trip there to trade that and maybe a few more games I missed.

No! GS is still ripping you guys off, reselling/trading games through Goozex, Glyde, Amazon, eBay still nets you at least twice as much value with most games even with the promotion! You are just keeping a monopoly alive...

Mass Effect 2- $35

Anyone know any good games to flip at gamestop? I was thinking of buying a few l4d2's at bestbuy then trading them in at gamestop.

Man, this preordering crap is annoying me. I can't pick up a copy of Heavy Rain at any of the local Gamestops because they're all being held. Oh well, got my Mass Effect 2 traded in at least and the coupon is good till Sunday. If my Mass Effect 2 (or everyone else's) is gone by then I'll pick up Uncharted 2 with it.

If there is 4 other places you just listed to trade in games, so how is it a monopoly? There also a dozen other places such as Walmart, ToysRus and Bestbuy.

Very far from a monopoly.

I for one want GS to stay alive since they give me very good value on games at times.

You would basically make, about a $1.00.

I was thinking people can just trade in Mass Effect 2 again and end up with a $40 copy of Heavy Rain. However, if you can, returning heavy rain for full price, and then trading in ME2 would net you about $20+ bucks profit. I have no idea if they would allow that though.

gonna stop by and dump ME2 and mlb 09. I guess I'll preorderd MLB 10 while im there and cancel my amazon preorder.

57-45 = 12 amazon
65.30-56 = 9.3 GS

was gonna send it to amazon, buy I'll net a few more dollars trading it to GS and preordering MLB 10 there. I'll probably rebuy ME2 later down the line to be honest, but its like a free rental at this tiv. Too bad MLB 09 is worthless
