Instructions on finding games in the database and inputting the values from different sections can be found in my blog post here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=14143. I would put the entire post in the thread but this is already kind of a large post.

FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

Sweet, couple of increases over night, it seems:

Rock Band 2 (360) - $10 (PS3 is only $7.25)
Saint's Row 2 - $7
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution - $8

I wouldn't bother selling it on eBay. I sold mine on there awhile back (minus controller and with a few old games), and I wish I didn't. After fees and worrying about whether or not the buyer is gonna complain about something, it isn't worth it. $140 really isn't too bad at all, really, unless you wanna get cash and use it towards something that isn't gaming-related.
The only reason I'm a little hesitant of selling it on say craiglist or ebay is because I don't know when it will die. So if I sell it and it dies I'm pretty much screwed.
Why are you screwed if you sell it on CL? Just like many treat it like a 'flea market', I treat everything that I sell or buy from there as 'as-is, buy at your own risk'.

If you actually guarantee your 360 and give someone from CL a refund if it dies in like a week from when you sell it, you need your head examined.

As is, where is, buy the shit or don't. Not my problem if the system is fucked in a day, a week or a month. Mind ya, everything I've sold on there has been gently used and/or new and sealed.

If they ask to 'come over and test it', offer to meet them at a Gamestop and have the GS people test it then say you don't wanna trade it. Simple as that. At least then if the system kicks the bucket a week after you sell it, you don't have anyone beating down your door.

$140 for a used 360 is a great price, especially if you're using the credit towards a new system or games. I wouldn't bother with CL or Ebay, as dealing with the customer could potentially be a hassle. Even then, I really cannot see many people buying a used 360 at the price of $140+.

Going up there tomorrow. Hopefully the $140 sill stands. It's only been 2 days since those guys posted.

My warranty expires in 2 months so $60 for a new Xbox360 with Jasper chip and 3 year warranty is worth every penny.

Wish me luck :D

$140 for my 360 is a great TiV. Especially since it's an early '06, out of warranty model.

Since I can always use a flash USB drive, there really is no point in keeping my 20GB drive either, and I doubt I could sell it for much anyway. So $12 isn't that bad I guess.

$152 for all of that, I'll have to get my wife's permission, but we have another 360 anyway. I hope she says yes!

I'd like to drop off my broken PS3 as well, as I think I've been quoted at $50 for as-is at GS. It's just that BR failure and can be fixed, but I already have a slim so no need for another PS3.

I see that my 80GB PS3 with software emulation gets $150 as a base trade-in. However, it doesn't play games because of the failed BR drive. According to the OP, they will knock off 50% because of that, correct? Which means I get $75? I think it was last fall when the manager, when I mentioned it to her, said they'd give $50 for it (I guess it depends on which model).

I'm probably going to trade it in, but I'm guessing the $50 promo won't apply to it, right?

It will show up automatically if I remember correctly but they are supposed to remove the bonus, which most of them don't.

And get to meet some oddball at the local Wendy's parking lot at 9PM. More money and a new 'friend' - WIN!

(Disclaimer: This post was meant in jest. Well, sort of. Obviously, your craigslist experience may vary, from downright frightening to easy as, well, whatever is easy for you.)
up to you on that but they count it separate
They'll count it as separate if don't attach the thing, right? I'm trading in my 20GB instead of selling it elsewhere. Too much hassle for me at the moment.

My birth day is coming up and I'm planning on trading in my 360 for a new one, when does the deal start? ($50 promo)

need for speed undercover $9
midnight club: la complete $10
fable 2 $3
cod world at war $5
kane & lynch $5

wii

hannah montana the movie $6
mario and sonic at the winter games $13.50 (used towards LBP GOTY)

Officially they dont, but some stores do add a refurb fee which varies from game to game. I'm pretty sure the refurb is based off the TIV of the game. Not sure if we ever discovered either the percentage or the refurb fee breakdowns. That would be something to try and start to keep track of to try and determine the breakdown.

^^^
They shouldn't penalize you at all. They should only deduct from your TIV if your disc has major scratches.

Mario Kart Wii TIV - $12

I already updated the CAG database. I traded this in assuming that the TIV was still $20. I figured that the tiered deal would bump it up to $30, which is why I didn't use it for the $25 promo. Oh well, you win some you lose some.

I tried to update the CAG database with Boom Blox's TIV, but I wasn't given an option to enter a GS TIV. Anyway here it is:

Boom Blox - $7.50

Where are you updating from? There are 4 places technically you can update the TIV for a game from.

NO! This is bad. I should have traded it in earlier.
Where are you updating from? There are 4 places technically you can update the TIV for a game from.
I used the search feature to pull up the game. Then I selected "Trade-ins", but there weren't any stores listed for Boom Blox, so I couldn't input a TIV.

You might as well just use the $25 promo to get a game you want...

NO! This is bad. I should have traded it in earlier.

just trade it in using the $25 of $29.99 purchase then return ur purchase and you have a $30 tiv.

I've been holding onto one so Im about to head out and do that.

Okay, yeah there are some games that are like that for some reason. I've been working on a list to send to cheapy to see what is going on. You can actually still update from that page, but it requires you to click edit game description and then choose the trade-in values tab. I had to do that for a while until the retailer page setup worked correctly.

If you were to type Boom Blox in the search, but click the $ symbol button at the end of the game listing it pops up a box that you can properly do trade-in values from with a drop down for the store the value is for. You could also Trade-in Values section in the buttons above but make sure you select gamestop from the drop down first, or through the GameStop retailer page. I wasn't sure if you were aware of those other methods. I'm actually going to work on a step by step instructions for updating through each format.

Thanks jp. I confirmed the TIV using one of the methods you described.

4/9/2010

I traded in

Xbox360 System w/Wireless controller - $90 + $50.00 Promo = $140 ( It only had 2 months left on the warranty )

I bought...

Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade $199.99

Manufacture date = 2/21/2010

Came with a Wireless controller ( some might think it comes with wired like I did. I was surprised... )

7% Florida Tax the system came out to ... $213.99

I added it up before I went so I got back 1 cent lol.

OVERALL TOTAL I payed was 73.99 for a new console and the 3 year warranty and the new Jasper Chipset.

Good day for me :D

YMMV. My closest GS has a store policy that all disc-only games get charged refurb fees "to pay for a new case". At least they are up front about it. It just means I have to go to a further away store to trade that kind of stuff.

A question on the $25 deal. Can you trade in two (different) qualifying games and have them both bump up to $25 or is it only one per new game you purchase? This is all so odd to me because the last time they ran a deal like this it bumped up the game automatically even if you didn't buy anything new to go along with it.

I can't think of anything I want to buy outright. Maybe Lego Indy 2, though I see it getting dirt cheap like most of the other Lego games (at least $20 if not less). But if I could trade two at once and only have to buy one new game I might do that. Otherwise it means hassling with returns - ugh...
