FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

Base TIV as of yesterday

Death Jr 2: Root of Evil - 1.25
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 - 7.75
Midnight Club: LA Remix - 4
Rengoku II: Stairway to Heaven - .65 :bomb:
Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny - 14
Star Wars The Force Unleashed - 6.50

After trade-in bonus and edge, I got $51.22. Not bad. Half of those games were purchased from BBV. Quite disappointed with Rengoku II and Death Jr 2, but had to sacrifice those two in order to qualify for the 40% trade-in bonus. You win some, you lose some.

Hmm. I didn't see anything about it yet but anyone know how ebgamestop is handling the pokewalker? Saw there was a $20 trade value listed for the game but was curious if they are doing like a $1 trade on the pokewalker too or just ignoring it.

Just a guess but they probably wouldn't even accept it (could be wrong on that though). It definitely wouldn't be required for the game trade (but I think you knew that ;)).
Does anybody know if I will be disqualified out of the promo if I trade in a game without the case?
No, but some stores will charge refurb fees when you are missing the case. YMMV of course, but it still should qualify for the promo even so (just minus a few bucks).

Updated lists and database.

Cleaned up the instructions I made for inputting values into the database via four different methods. If anyone wouldn't mind taking the time to look at them to see if they are clear enough to actually use that would be much appreciated. I've gotten some information about the refurb fees on consoles and on games but I'm not sure the best way to format the console ones. Those fees probably change with the value of the console itself. The game refurb fees I got the values but not all of the corresponding ranges. Still working on that.

Brutal Legend (360) - 5
Ghostbusters (360) - 6
Crackdown - 3
MX vs. ATV: Untamed (360) - 7

Updated lists and database.

Here is where we are at on the states missing information or we don't have consistent information on whether purchases with GameStop credit is taxed. What I would like to get for the two states with conflicting reports is 2-3 reports either way. Hopefully not the same number on each side, which will cause them to stay on the conflicting reports. Any CAGs in the area not reported, I would appreciate the help on finding out if you are/aren't charged tax with credit purchases.
No Information Yet: Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming

Maine - YES to charging tax on credit. Happened to me with Brutal Legend and some Wii games last month.

In fact, I had to use my debit card in the amount of like 34 cents because I didn't have enough credit to cover all the games AND the tax.

Former gamestop sm/asm here in NY. Store credit was not taxed here. I.e. if you reserved a game in full with store credit we would always use the exact amount($59.99 for example) If you reserved a game in full with cash we would have to manually add the tax amount so you wouldn't owe us when you came to pick it up.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought maybe posting a list of ones we still need in the thread and not just the first post would stimulate some information.

I have added refurb information for consoles next to their trade-in values. I don't have refurb information on the Wii and the PS3 values I'm still working on deciphering the information I was supplied by an anonymous GameStop employee. I have also added the refurb information on games. That is not near being 100% accurate but decided to post what I have been given and what we have deciphered so far.
Does anybody know if I will be disqualified out of the promo if I trade in a game without the case?
Just use a generic black case (if you have some lying around). I purchased some generic cases for around .23 each in case of this scenario.

I am in Ohio and I have made many purchases with credit at gamestop including several in full purchases. I have always been charged tax either way. So if for some reason we are not suppose to be charged their system certainly does not take care of that.

I am from South Carolina and I bought alot of games with the credit i had on my edge card and they never charge tax with the money that was on the edge card

TIV as of today 4/13

Wii
Big Brain Academy Wii Degree - 8.00
Dirt 2 - 7.00
Mario and Sonic Olympic Winter games - 13.50
Marvel Super Hero Squad - 8.75
PS3
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion - 5.25
DS
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 - 14.00
Pokemon Diamond - 5.00

Texas: No sales tax if paid for entirely with store credit.

Oklahoma: (Last year, as late as August) Yes, sales tax on purchases made entirely with Edge Card. I have a boatload of receipts to show such a practice. If you would like a scan of some of the receipts I can... but it's a hassle.

The only reason you are probably getting conflicting reports because of deceptive practices regarding pre-orders. On occasion I have not been charged tax on store credit with respect to pre-orders... but that may have been a system error, because I completely paid for FFXIII with credit and it was around 65 (we have a 9.75% sales tax because of the city).

Base TIVs from today

PSP-Pinball Hall of Fame: Gottlieb 2.25
DS-Kingdom Hearts 358/2 14.00
PSP-Secret Agent Clank 4.25
PSP-Dissidia Final Fantasy 8.00
PS3-Brutal Legend 4.00
Wii-Pikmin 6.25
Wii-Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter 6.50
Wii-WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 3.25
Wii-Scooby Doo: First Frights 5.25
360-Eternal Sonata 7.00
360-Mirror's Edge 5.00
360-Bully: Scolarship Edition 7.00

In regards to the tax for credit purchases...

While what applies at one store MOST times will apply at another in the same state, it is not guaranteed. Stores can individually change their pos to add/remove tax from certain purchases and/or tender types.

For example are two of the stores near me. One taxes points cards, live cards, GIFT CARDS, everything. Tax also applies to purchases made entirely with credit. Another store, 20 minutes further away does not tax any of those things. They also do not tax purchases paid for entirely with credit.

edit----wireless 360 controller tiv $12.75 base as of 4/13/2010. gave me enough to get my broken flash drive!!!

Fresh TIVs from an hour or so ago:

:gba: Final Fantasy I + II Dawn of Souls - 2.00
:gba: Final Fantasy IV Advance - 2.25

:ds: Feel the Magic: XY/XX - 1.00

:wii: Link's Crossbow Training - 0.75

:ps2: Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter - 0.70
:ps2: Gungrave - 0.55
:ps2: Phantom Brave - 0.75
:ps2: Shadow of the Colossus - 5.50
:ps2: Ys: The Ark of Napishtim - 1.00

:psp: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - 4.50

:360: Madden NFL '06 - 0.50
:360: Prey - 1.00
:360: Project Gotham Racing 3 - 0.50

Phew... this brings me up to 51 games traded in the past five months. I swear I'm totally done for the time being; my collection has been sufficiently pruned. Still, with the promo and Edge card I netted over $26 in credit for these 13 games, which is not bad considering most of them were barely worth half a dollar.

So if the purchase is not entirely on store credit, will the difference be charged tax, or the entire thing?

I apologize if this has been asked, but does anyone know what information GS employees can see when you use your edge card? Can they see your prior purchases, or like things you've bought from the website?

madworld - 3.25

What makes me sad are the trade-ins I have been seeing for games I've been trying to get on CAG here, even the marketplace! I encourage folks to look around on CAG maybe BEFORE you dump these sub-$10 type games into Gamestop?

Please?

You can't look at the prices that way.

An $8 base TIV game with bonuses traded into Gamestop will give you $12 in credit instantly with current promos.

Say you wanted to sell it to a CAG. Now you have to take the time to put it on a tradelist, wait for someone to see it, respond and arrange the deal, package and ship the game all along hoping you don't get ripped off by someone shady.

Plus the CAG isn't going to pay $8. I'd want at least what I could get at Gamestop. So make it $12. Then add $3 for shipping. $1 minimum for packaging. We're already up to $16, and I'm not seeing any more money from the deal than what I would get at GS for a hell of a lot more trouble.
I apologize if this has been asked, but does anyone know what information GS employees can see when you use your edge card? Can they see your prior purchases, or like things you've bought from the website?
They can see all that. All that stuff AND your date of birth, place of birth, social security number, driver's license number, phone number and address, the names of your first born children, all that and I think with their last pos update they can also tell what you had for lunch.

Just out of curiosity, what would potentially cause there to be a refurbish fee on a console that's still operational? I was going to trade in a 2007 model 360 with wireless controller (All still working) to take advantage of the $50 bonus offer so I could upgrade to the Spring Elite bundle. It has a few dings and scrapes around the center horizontal line (Not very noticeable), and a small crack along the back plastic mesh where the fan is, and the controller has a few nicks and dings on it as well. So do refurb fees apply to the outer appearance or just if it doesn't function properly? Also, when you trade it in do you have to provide the original video cord? Thanks for any input.
