FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

Why wouldn't they? Just bring the receipt in and they do a return or exchange for you for no reason whatsoever within 7 days of purchase.

I have to add this is the first time I have ever had an issue with trading in games at a Gamestop. I try to bring in a couple of the same copies everytime just to see if I get a cool clerk or not. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. The one closest to me will take up to three of the same copies as long as I have a receipt I can let them have to staple to theirs for their records. Totally and completely understandable by me. I tried this one store though before my doctors appointment today because i knew I had to unload some of these so I take in a couple just to see and holy shit this guy has to be the biggest douche I have ever met. He starts third degreeing me "where did you get these, how do you know what sku to use, you traded these games in before, looks to me like you stole them"

I was like whoa buddy. For one I said i've traded in multiple copies before, not these particular ones, and also I have a receipt right here. And I showed him it and he still went off on me and said he wouldn't take them because they said 0 on the price so I stole them. Said he wasn't going to let me take advantage of "his" store like that. Whatever dude. Then he takes it even further and says he's going to call every store in the area and give them my info. At this point I just looked at him and said you are just messin with me now. I was ok up until that point, he just had to tell me no, scan the one copy and that would have been good. Now this junior detective is not only calling me a liar but insulting me even when I have a receipt from the store. No magazine racks were harmed but you don't treat customers like criminals. I had to start laughing when he snatched the 30 percent extra coupon from me and I swear honest to gods truth said "And also I will be CONFISCATING this coupon" I broke out laughing and literally gave him two thumbs up and said "do what you got to do hero" OH NOES! DON'T TAKE MY PRINTABLE COUPON!

After that I went to my normal gamestop where they happily and without any issue took 3 of my nerf games with my best buy receipt. I even let her confiscate my wii coupon with no incidents.
By any chance this was across the street from Springfield mall in VA? Guy treated me the same way when I tried to sell the gun. He said "you traded in 1 yesturday and from what I've heard 1 the day before that",

can you take the game only than?

"no, you can't sell anymore of those here"

They are allowed to refuse any trade. Why would they want 30 guns or 30 copies of the game when they will sit there forever and not sell? I wouldn't want them taking up space in my store when I could put other things there that will sell.
Goddammit! The GS rep refused to give me a TiV quote for a DSi over the phone. Ugh.
Nope, Florida. Funny thing happened though the next day. I work in a suburb area and was trying to trade in a couple more at a gamestop near my work. They guy says "Oh man, we got an alert this morning that some people stole a bunch of these and were trying to trade these in" I was like oh really, trying really hard not to laugh. I said well these weren't stolen, I even have my receipt see. And then he looks at the receipt and says whoa, the alert even said they were stolen from Best Buy. You have a receipt though so you are cool.

I was kind of just laughing at him and the situation inside at that point wondering if that douche actually got the local DM saying someone was trying to trade in stolen games. This guy actually took my last two games. I can't call him a cool guy though for what he said next though.

"Well, I will take them because I know you didn't steal these. You have a receipt and you're not black"

I just stood there dumbfounded for a couple minutes wondering if I really heard what I heard.

That's a pretty crazy story. I can't believe what that racist douche said, even if it was said jokingly that's not how to talk to people.

I am almost chuckling though imagining 350lb gangbangers walking down the street with stolen big orange Nerf guns tucked in their belt. ;) I bet this is what that GS employee must have envisioned when he got that memo about "stolen" nerf games. ;)

3/25/10 Base TIV

360
Brutal Legend - $4
GTA:IV - $5.25
GTA:Episodes from Liberty City - $11
Gears of War 2 - $5

PS3
God of War III - $30
Folklore - $6.50

Uncharted 2 - $18
Valkyria Chronicles - $5

Borderlands $22
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 $22
Darksiders $20
Dragon Age: Origins $17
Fallout 3: GOTY $18
King Kong $2.25

Got me $151.87 total after edge and 40% trade 6 bonus which is pretty good considering I only paid about $144 of trade credit after tax to get those first 5 plus an extra copy of Fallout 3:GOTY during that B1G1 gamestop.com sale that lasted for a whole day.

Now I rant:

Buyer beware when buying used games from gamestop.com. As confirmed by a gamestop employee, gamestop.com only sells/ships the refurbished games that get sent to them from the stores when you buy used games from the website. (maybe this is the real reason they are cheaper online) This would be fine if all the games they send didn't look like crap and were actually given a quality resurface, but such is not the case.

Based on all the weird gray residue that is often left along the edges of resurfaced discs and the scratches/swirl marks that are still visible on the discs after resurfacing they must be using a pretty crappy machine/process, because the even a couple of the local video stores have machines that can take an awful looking game and make it look like brand new in under 2 minutes. (they can take an xbox 360 game that was in your system when it got bumped and has a severe contact ring and make it so it will not even show minor blemishes)

Needless to say the games I traded in were all from that sale except King Kong and they all had one issue or another. (scratches, swirl marks, generic black case, missing the disc holder flap for a 2nd disc) Some of those games looked bad enough that I probably would have been charged a refurb fee or 2 if I hadn't left some of the defect/refurb stickers that those lazies at the warehouse left on the cases.

For those of you wondering why I didn't trade off my other Fallout 3: GOTY game that was from that short lived sale, it was because I decided to exchange it for a good copy at the the local GS. Not only was the game in a generic black DVD case, but they only sent me Disk 2 (which I believe is just the DLC disc) so if that had been my only item in the order I would not have even been able to play the game. Since they try to only carry games in good condition at the local stores the replacement I got was in it's original 2 disc case with both discs in flawless condition and very little wear on the manual, so I was a happy camper.

Quick opinion on those trading in games without cases: You suck

Seriously though, as someone who prefers to buy/sell my games in the best condition possible, I totally support stores that charge refurb fees for missing cases/artwork/manuals. I know that unless it is a very good deal, I wont buy an incomplete game, so they are harder to sell and they should be able to give less money for games when you can't/wont provide everything that came with the original. I know I will never order used games from the website again.

Cliff notes:

Buying used games at Gamestop Stores = Good

Buying used games at Gamestop.com = Bad

People who don't take care of their stuff or purposely trade in incomplete games = Suck

^ I hear ya. When I got Final Fantasy XIII used, they only had 2 discs. The clerk needed to grab one from another trade in and put all 3 discs into ONE black dvd case with the PROMOTIONAL cover slip (the crappy mutliplatform kind). Talk about being cheap. :/

Exactly. It amazes me that people still get annoyed when GS finally catches on to a flip. You milked the hell out of it. The gravy train had to end at some point.

What you mean is...try to sell it for $55. No one is buying HD-DVD drives, and if they are, they sure as hell aren't gonna buy a $55 used one.

So only about 18 bucks?? Hm.. Not worth it then.. If they only give $24 for store credit that still isn't good enough..

Looking to take advantage of the 40% trade in credit with 6 games... does anyone know if they still give the 40% additional credit for the 7th, 8th, 9th, etc. games? Trying to see if I can trade some older games in along with a DS Lite so I don't have to pay anything extra for a new XL tomorrow.
