Guitar Hero 2 Xbox 360 - free shipping, no tax, free bag, RedOctane.com!
I would have to imagine that they'd be under contract to only produce a certain type of controllers.
Well, I guess the real test will be when Wii Guitar Hero hits.
Microsoft has no vested interest in making guitars or keeping them from being wireless, save for maybe a deal with Red Octane to allow them to get more fees when RO releases a wireless controller with their proprietary wireless setup.
But that's exactly the point. MS doesn't want companies using their proprietary wireless technology because MS wants to make money. MS most definitely does have an interest in making guitars or having someone else do it (see next paragraph). You're right that it's most definitely NOT in their interest to prevent a wireless guitar from being made at all. But that's not what we're debating.

That being said, there's two obvious ways the MS can make money on a wireless guitar. Make it themselves or have Red Octane do it and pay royalties (to MS). Either way, MS makes money.

The only question from MS's perspective, in a gross oversimplification, is which way generates the most revenue and is also the most cost effective.

Thus far, it's my understanding MS has opted for making peripherals themselves and not divulging anything about their tech. Will it be different this go around?

anyone seen mentioned anywhere about how long the cord is? I was at EB friday and saw a controller extension cable for only $5 so at least we have that cheap option if we want more space. It even had a sticker on it saying something about great for Guitar Hero 2. :D

A controller "extension cable" is just an A Male to A Female USB cable. Stock up at monoprice.com for under $3 for 15ft (or under $2 for 6ft)

I guarantee you will see a wireless guitar in 2007.
There is no way Microsoft will leave that money on the table.

Will it be different this go around?
Exactly, Microsoft stands to make a metric ton of money my letting RO produce the wireless guitars in royalties. The racing wheel was different, because they publish a lot of the racing games on the console, but they have nothing in the Guitar Hero series, so they might as well let RO make the guitars, have no overhead themselves, and let free money pour in.

RvB: How does the Wii weigh in on this? When I mentioned a contract, I meant with Microsoft to only produce wireless guitars, not other wireless controllers for the 360. I'm not sure that RO would set something up that would make the concept of a wireless guitar exclusive to the 360, although maybe I guess. I'm still pretty convinced that the Wii guitar with either have a socket for the wiimote just to snap into or it will be corded to remote much like the CC. I hope for the former.

Just got to thinking, we're about 2 weeks out from the release, and UPS Ground usually takes about a week to get across the country. I wonder if we'll start seeing RedOctane orders ship later this week.

Well, I know that they finished working on the game last week, and this week and next week they'll be making copies of the game so it could happen. That would be awesome, and it would be a nice reward for those who pre-ordered.

It would be nice.

I believe it went gold on the 16th.

I mentioned the Wii version because it would seem that Nintendo has no intention of allowing the Wii remote technology out of their company as well. Therefore if they gave the technology to Red Octane it would be up to them to prove they're not going to use the technology to make their own wii remotes. Then again I hadn't considered having the remote plug into the guitar...
Ok, here's the thing. Red Octane produces other peripherals aside from the guitar controller. Who's to say that once they release the technology to Red Octane that Red Octane won't turn around and use what they've learned to produce a wireless 360 controller? Hell, at that point that be one of only 2 manufacturers of the wireless 360 controller.
MS can easily draw up a contract with NDA and restrict Red Octane from only being licensed to make wireless Guitar Controllers for 360. There are lot of different ways for MS to proctect their patents and IP and still let wireless guitar controllers become a reality.

Hell, they can even make their own if they wanted or buy out Red Octane from Activision or whoever owns them right now.

Well, I played this over at Wal Mart and really liked the new guitar. It feels quite solid and not as plasticky cheap as the PS2 versions. So I ordered it, how many times will Red Octane get me to buy this game? And how many songs will I buy online. At least I haven't bought a wireless controller, the room is fine with the wired controller on the PS2 so I never bothered.

They shipped about a week before release when the Ps2 version came out. I got mine on release Tuesday and I live on the east coast.

My guess is the remote would just snap into the base of the guitar, and you'd use it for menu navigation and start/select. Hell, it could still have the sensor sticking out of the bottom, so you could point the whole guitar at the screen to start the game.

I'm going to order this. I can't wait to play it! It's been the only thing on my mind for 5 days!:bouncy:

put in the order earlier today. Only reason i've been hesitating it was living on the East Coast. I have it pre-ordered at a Gamestop, do i just ask them to put it towards something different, or store credit now then?

I am looking for some thoughts from fellow CAG members. I am new to the GH franchise, so I don't really care whether I get it exactly on release day or a little later. Being a big CAG fan, I also hate paying retail prices for anything, which is sort of what this deal is. Granted, from what I understand, GH bundles seems to always hover around retail anyway, but is there any possibility of better deals after it is released?
 • Do B&M stores have any interesting promotional launch deals on GH (based on the PS2 bundles?)
 • Does Amazon ever have lower prices on it?
 • Could RedOctane.com have a return of those 15% off codes which could be used once the game is released?
I also take into account that Best Buy sends out 10% off coupons almost on a monthly basis, so that would be $9 off the bundle price right there. Also, I live in Delaware, so sales tax is never an issue, and as for the free guitar bag that has a certain dollar value - I am not sure what the actual value would be to me personally, since I would never travel with the thing anyway.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Waiting for a coupon might be the way to go, but at MSRP with no shipping and the free bag, it's a good deal. You could always eBay the bag (I think it retails for $20 or $25) and make up a couple of bucks that way if you wanted.

hey guys just wanna clarify a few things... If you earlier pre orders placed an order and you did a check order status now does it say back ordered for you as well. It does for me. Curious if people putting in orders now (i did mine yesterday) are now getting this because they filled they're initial shipment?

I ordered along time ago and when I checked just now it says backordered so don't worry. ;)
"on hold" as of march 16th for my order placed march 10th.
My order from early on the 9th is backordered. I would maybe double check with them on your order to ensure there's not a problem.

Just checked mine for grins - I ordered quite awhile ago - and my status is pending:) I'm so hoping I get it a few days before my friends who did the local pre-order not trusting for anything online to get to them by the release date.

Man, every time I see a post in this thread, I think maybe it's started to ship. Always so disappointing to find that it hasn't yet.

And here am I, doing that exact same thing. Sorry.

That's good advice, thanks. But I think I'll wait until everyone else has their shipment sent before I start to worry and wonder and contact them.
I wish they accepted PayPal. The wife will freak out if she sees a $90 charge on the CC bill...
Maybe introduce the first GH to her? My wife actually liked the game.

It's not the game - it's the $90...

Well I finally bit, and bought this.

Only reason, I didnt want to, was the fear of not getting it at launch. But I am sure they will send it before.
i just looked at my checking and i have a pre auth from red octane for 89.99
When did you buy it online?

i'm trying to figure out this backorder/pending thing. i ordered the multi-player bundle and am seeing backordered. what about everyone else ?
i'm trying to figure out this backorder/pending thing. i ordered the multi-player bundle and am seeing backordered. what about everyone else ?
I order the normal bundle and see pending.
I order the normal bundle and see pending.
Yea, i did it two days ago, and it took a day to switch to this backordered status that its in. Should they be putting on the pre-order page that the pre-orders are in back ordered status if they can't allocate the amount of pre-orders? I mean thats what preorders are about. Buying before its available pretty much.....

I placed my order on the 10th and at the time it said "In Stock"... my status switched to backorder on the 21st. So, I got in about as early as anyone and we all have the same status.
