Half-Life 2 Discussion Thread

SPOILER!

I think it went that the Xen were always good, jsut enslaved by the headcrabs and by Ninhalith. When he was killed at the end of HL1, the Xen were free'd, and helped the humans, and the combine are a new, different enemy to all.

btw, how do you take a screen shot?

BTW pt 2: Did anyone actually find this scene or was it cut from the game?

I think it's in the demo but it's not in the actual gameplay. Not that I saw.

Anybody find the "All-Knowing Wortigaunt?" Supposedly there's a hidden Vortigant in the game. They have instructions to find him at Gamespot. I missed him the first time around but I'm going to try to find him now.

Is he just some stupid funny easter egg or does he actually explain the story and what is happening.

Remember when you played Half-Life on a computer that could run it well enough for it to be in a higher resolution? Remember how god damn mother fucking choppy it was every now and then? The screen would freeze up and the sound would loop for a few seconds, almost like your computer was smoking a big rock of crack.

Mine does that with HL2. In fact, Windows ran out of virtual memory because of HL2.

My specs:
2.1 GHz AMD Athlon
GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB 8xAGP
512MB DDR 333MHz

Running HL2 in:
1024x768
Mostly everything on medium, some on high (textures.. medium quality textures look like shit)

Stupid Valve and their badass game with an engine that doesn't really run very well. Why couldn't you be more like Doom 3? Oh well.

HL2 is still really awesome.

Judging by the color of the walls, I'd say that looks like the citadel. But what do I know? I'm on my way there right now. :D

They were saying this is a bug and they released the patch yesterday. Not the patch seems iffy to me. It eliminates choppiness on tight turns and during loading/saving. However, at least initially I got the impression it slowed down my overall frame rate. I was playing the canal area again to find the all-knowing vortigaunt (found him) and initially it seemed even more choppy. But after a reboot everything ran much more smoothly so I assume the patch did help. There is a console command to show frame rate. I'll have to try it.

Did this vortigaunt have anything meaningful to add to the story? I didn't really follow the HL storyline until this game. Which rocks, btw.

He wasn't amazingly enlighteninmg, he spoke in an annoyingly superfluous manner. But did explain a few things. The annoying thing is that he exoplained a lot about the previous half-life, but hardly anythign about combine. He does explain why they're working with the humans.

If I say anymore it'll give what he says away. It's nice to meet him, but now that I heard him I wouldn't go out of my way to find him in the normal playing of the game. Track him down after you've finished the game. He's on the canal level.

If anyone is looking for a good summary of the story check out this website that really breaks down the story and events from both Half Life games. Be warned it does have spoilers if you have not played either game yet.

It's interesting. But there's no way in hell he got all that from the game. That may have been what the creators were intending but taking the games as a stand-alone explanation they do it very poorly.

I know that if you noclip through the part where the wall thingies are closing in, there's some vortigants or something using their powers to fight and they talk to you and say weird stuff..

The hydra (blue line/tentacle thing) was removed from the game, due to the fact that it wasn't "fun".

Yea it is 80% theorized information that is on that website, but it helped me tie up a few loose ends and also formulate my own theories on the game.

Got a question about something I saw in-game. A mechanism of sorts. *SPOILERS AHEAD*

In the dune buggy level as you're traversing the beaches, what are those oil pump looking things that I see every once in a while. I didn't realize you could turn them off before. What's their purpose?

*END SPOILER*

I'm not really sure. They pound the ground and I thought that they might've been disturbing those annoying flying things.. maybe it was to something that was removed from the game?

They're supressers. They keep the ant lions away. When the ant lioons are hostile you want to keep them on. When they're friendly turn them off.
YAY! Multiplayer DM is avaiable for download

Counter-Strike wasn't really fun before, too many cheaters.

But yeah, ragdoll physics is awesome on CS.
Oh.... i though u said it was fun....before the cheaters...not that its fun now.

Yeah Half-Life 2 is fun sometimes, but for me gets old after a few hours. Repeats next day. lol.

I have to admit it....Half-life 2 blew me away. There is SO much to interact with it makes me want to soil myself. However with such short gameplay, it makes me wonder if Sierra simply ran out of funding. Also the ending is kind of lame ,but you gotta love the gravity gun.

Also, I am running on a 56k, and I am about fed up with steam, i'm sick of having to "validate game files" and this and that...it takes like 20-25 min to do that before i can play the game, and that is SAD. The thing that makes it worse, is it did this to me two days in a row, what, did Valve think I had a bought copy one day, and a copy the next? Give me a break, i paid 50 bucks to play the game, not get investigated. Steam sucks

Yeah, Steam is pretty crappy. And it killed the MOd comunity for awhile. There use to be a hundred or so servers for FA that regularly had people playing. As well as ten or so that kicked ass like The Zoo. But once iI went to steam there were no servers with anyone on them ata all. That and in recoding FA for Steam it introduces a bug that killed the game unless you knew how to manually edit your config files to fix it. I hope there is an automatic fix out now because I had to edit manually.

wow, this game is really awesome, found a nice deal on it for $35 after ggc

the graphics are so great in this game and it's just fun, so far, I like it way more than halo 2, we'll see if I feel the same way in a week but this is one game that nobody should miss

Ok. I bought this and have been veeeeery carefully getting into it. That is, not allowing myself to become addicted. With this and everquest 2....i think i might never use any free time for anything beneficial. in any case. im trying not to read any spoilers for the time being....but will post reactions soon...
Just finished the story. Took me maybe 17-27 hours at a meandering pace. Man was that fun...
17 hours? if you were like this guy you could beat it in under 3, which is pretty damn amazing considering all the scripted stuff that goes on and makes you wait. its really intersting to see how fast this guy gets through Ravenloft and the bridge section.
For all those who have the game- is there a way to turn off blood? Just so I can play when my parents/ little brother is around.
no, i havent seen a console command or code for that. you may want to look around the options possibly....

just out of curiosity, and nothing against you or your parents, but I never understood why turning the blood off makes a violent game OK. Doesnt it just show little kids that when they shoot someone, that they will just fall over? if a games already violent, showing the kids no consequnces to that violence seems worse than showing death and how bad it could be.

I completely agree with you. However, when its bloody people just freak out more. I haven't got it yet, but I really want it. Anyways, is it really bloody? IE when you shoot a combine soldier they spew blood everywhere? Basically, is it any worse than Halo or Ninja Gaiden?

There's no gibbing on Combine, but there's a shitload of blood, ESPECIALLY in Ravenholm, and the Zombie will be gibbed, spewing blood, and screaming in all sorts of unholy pain. Seriously, set one of fire, then hit escape, it still plays the screams.
Creepy... yet cool. Still not sure If I'll get it. I wish they would have a demo, so I could see it for myself. DANG IT!
You should buy it. Its worth it.
