Have you ever been asked to show your ID at a gamestop even though you were over 17?

Well I'm 28 and I brought a few m rated games up to the cashier and he asks "may I see your ID". I was like wtf, do I not look over 17 and he says "we have to ask".

My question is, have you ever been asked to show ID? If so, how old are you?

I have at Best Buy before. I dont mind but when the two 13 year old girls in front of me were able to buy an R rated dvd with out showing ID it is kind of pointless.

haha yes, last game I bought there...Heavy Rain. Think it's the only time I've had to show ID for a game before. I'm 25, thought he was joking when he said he needed to verify my age...I was the only one laughing hah.

The guys there know me, so no. They usually just say you are aware this is a M reated game or something. I haven't looked 17 since I was 12.

A couple of times, although I figured it was to verify that the edge card was mine. Ever since I passed that 17 threshold about M rated games I've completely forgotten that policy even exists.

It depends on the place, and whether the cashier/sales associate is able to override the system. manual entries, yes; but some require sliding the magnetic strip.

I have a feeling here we've all been carded more often for buying games than beer, tobacco, or porn.

I worked as an assistant manager at a Gamestop for 5 years and I always would ask any customer that I didn't for sure know was over the age of 17, in other words someone who I have never seen before or let alone had a conversation with. The reason for this is because Gamestop gets rated by the ESRB every so often at random stores by a secret shopper who usually will be the oldest looking 16 year old on the planet.

You gotta always ask because one of the few things Gamestop tries to take pride in is they have a good track record with enforcing the ratings.

Not at Gamestop, but I have at other places. I went to have blood drawn a few months ago, and was told I needed a parent to be with me since I was under 17 (I'm 25).

I don't see why you wouldn't want or expect them to. They should just card everybody, the only excuse I can think of for it is if you go to the same place all the time and they've already carded you like 12 times before. Don't want them to get out of the habit though.

happens to me quite often, but everyone thinks i look much younger than i am, so i've gotten used to it.

however, i do remember when i was quite a bit younger, my father of 40-something was carded buying some game and a new TV at best buy. he just looked at the cashier like she was ridiculous, left the tv and game there and walked out. awkward stuff.

got carded every time i use edge card. today i bought Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 from Target for 15 and the woman asked me to show my ID so she can scan. asked why and she said that if she put in the birthdate they would have to call manager to approve it. im 24 and mistaken 30s. i get away with ordering beer from a bar without being carded.

A lot of places have a "card them regardless" policy. Especially for smokes and booze until they remember you enough not to have to ask.

LOL funny stuff.

Seriously though. What if some dude that's obviously over 17 rode a bike or walked a few miles to the store only to be denied purchasing a few games because he needs ID. I'd be pissed which I'm sure has happened to some poor bastards

How did you know?

I got carded at Target the other day for buying a clearance black 360 controller battery and a DS game called Bangaio. Turns out the fuck head at the register somehow put his machine to in refund mode and it was asking to scan my id. When I told him about how his machine was set wrong (It was saying SCAN RECEIPT, not ID) and kept on insisting to see my drivers ID. He scanned it and it still beeped at him. What a fucking idiot.

Yea for some reason they took out that override privilege from cashiers. It use to be all they do is enter DOB and that's it. Now a manager has to input the code, give you a dirty look and volla! There is a thread somewhere about being carded at target on here....

Can't really count Target because their new computer systems require them to scan IDs (and they can't just put in a date without a manager override).

I got carded at Target for buying MadWorld or something.

The girl at Gamestop never asks because she knows me (and likes me) :D

One of the other girls at Gamestop (the snorlax), asked for ID, but that was because it was easier for her to get my preorder.
Yes and I'm 22. But anyone who has actually seen my pic here on CAG would know that I don't look my age.
Poast it again.

It should be still on the cag family album sticky-ed on the top of this section.

She looks like shes around 13-14 years old...a Tween..and could possibly blend in at some middle school :O

I have a former college classmate on facebook who is around 5 feet, thin and looks STILL looks like shes only 12 years old. It's been 10 years since I've seen her and she still looks that way :O

Yeah, a few years ago I bought "The Orange Box" for 360 for a friend and I got carded. Didn't bother me one bit.

apparently Target now cards you if you buy those Compressed Aircans. I saw this one video that I thought was a joke/fake about this one chick buying several air cans and acting all stupid, but it turns out you can really get fucked up with this shit.

i got carded once at gamestop. i am 25. I was more surprised than anything.

I got carded one time for buying a cheap cigar (dutch) and they had to swipe my ID to some machine. I thought that was really weird (and scary).

I don't recall being carded lately (although lately, I haven't bothered to shave much, so that may have something to do with it). But it is interesting. I remember when I was 15 or so, I could buy M rated games no problem (unless I went to Wal-Mart), but when I turned 18, all of a sudden I was getting carded (21 in a couple of days).

For those getting carded at Target, if you look at the cashier's screen, you do notice that it asks them to swipe your ID through, so its not like the cashier is picking you out cause you look young.

Gamestop has to card anyone who looks under 30/40 for most M-rated games, and for big ones like Halo, CoD, etc., they have to card everyone. I've seen them card grandparents for the big M-rated games before.

There's been lots of threads over at The Consumerist about the Target POS now requiring ID to be scanned for everything under the sun, unless you want to wait 5-10 minutes for a manager to come over to manually input your DoB.

yes! im 26 with a full beard and a face that says "Ive been thru some shit in my life" and they still card me and with an attitude on top of that!
