Have you ever made a kamikaze run to a checkpoint?

I don't get to game as much as I use to these days so I'm all in favor of games with a lot of checkpoints that quick save for me. Now the thing is they feel a little flawed. Recently while playing Splinter Cell Conviction rather than killing all the enemies or sneaking past them I made a kamikaze run to get to the next checkpoint once or twice. Have you ever found yourself doing this? In this case it seemed to make a part that should be difficult a little too easy. I guess it could be just bad level design in this case and not every game would be so forgiving but still....thoughts?

Star Wars The Force Unleashed
I started out 1st level playing regularly. Somewhere along the way I began to wonder if I could just run straight through. It worked so I played the rest of the game that way. Just started out a level and ran from one end to the other without stopping to fight anything.

Halo can be that way a little too. The idea that you have to kill everything before moving on can make the game harder than it is. Simply running past everyone to your objective can make it a lot easier.

Are you people too young to remember Super Mario Bros? You don't even have to fight the final boss, you can just run past him.

I'll often do something similar with tough, rpg bosses. No matter how intricately detailed my strategy may have been, if it looks like it's nearly dead, or if my team is in bad shape, I'll go for broke. No buffing, no healing, I'll just unload everything I have...and hope for the best.

Dead Space had some poor enemy design later in the game that was just plain annoying so I'd just jog past everything. Why waste a dozen rounds trying to shoot little spiders? And who cares about the wall creature when he can't even chase you?

Some of the fights in FFXIII were just plain endurance tests as well, and I wanted to run past them but I'd be paranoid about not having a strong enough party, so I put up with it.

yeah like you during my first playthrough of deadspace i did that alot until i got used to the game and figured out how to deal with the diff enemy types. did it with the gowc as well when i was trying to get that speed trophy.

I recently did it with Uncharted. I was getting so tired of the endless amount of pirates, I would just make a mad dash to the next checkpoint to avoid having to fight.

I did that with Halo 1 and 2 I think. I think when I fought the flood in Halo 1, and near the end of Halo 2 I just started making a run for it.

If I ever get stuck fighing difficult enemies over and over again I will usually make a run for the checkpoint a time or two. Sometimes it works.

The first thing that came to mind was that downhill run at the end of the Estate mission on Modern Warfare 2 in my Insanity playthrough. All you can really do is spam grenades and hope you don't get shot while running.

Lost Planet also had several moments that would make me rage and decide to run through everything.

Any CoD veteran difficulty before MW2 basically forced you to do this with the infinite respawning of enemies, especially on veteran difficulty. Certain games it may be cheap to do it on, but I blame no one on at least these 2 games.

Edit: And at least a few times on MW2 basically forced you to do it as well, there is just no way to fight everyone off.

does running to the enemy spawn point in multiplayer count?

Hee, hee, hee....run, camp, kill, kill, kill.... ;) too easy.

The two winning Starcraft campaign strategies:

1. Turtle until you can make a billion BCs/Carriers/Zerg composition of choice.
2. Turtle until you can make a billion Shuttles (use Hallucination as necessary)/Dropships (use Defensive Matrix as necessary)/Overlords and just fly over the enemy army right to the mission objective.

I've been brain-washed to believe you HAVE to kill everything till it's safe again to continue. I think I only have done this once in recent memory and it was very short and sweet. It was towards the end of Uncharted 1 with the descendants, my one and only complaint about that game (fucking hate those pricks). I fought through and killed every single one I saw despite being terrified most of the time.

I finally make it out of the bunker to the opened dock where there's both pirates and descendants in a free for all, again I suffer through all of it till everything's dead. Finally, I make a dash for the ladder to the surface (THANK GOD, I CAN FINALLY DITCH THESE FREAKS) and two more descendants climb out right there. But I say "No, fuck you!" and climb up. I kinda feel ashamed to not have finished those two off after killing all the others, but I was just glad to be out of there.

Whenever I get around to replaying Uncharted 1, I think I'm gonna employ the running strategy. Tho from the few times I did try in Uncharted 1 I almost always got killed.

Yep, in Modern Warfare 2 on The Only Easy Day...Was Yesterday.

During the last part of the mission the enemies throw a smoke screen. There are a ton of enemies and on Veteran I kept getting flanked from either the right or the left and I got tired of it. So I went right, killed maybe 3 guys then rushed the breach door and activated it. Don't even need to clear the windows, just rush the door.

yeah when i went for my platinum on u1 i would avoid most of those guys as well especially when theyre focused on killing the soldiers since there were always more coming no matter how many you killed.

Same for me. I've done it a few times, but usually when I do it, I have low health and if I don't think I can kill everything and live I'll make an attempt (and usually fail) at trying to make a mad dash to the checkpoint.

Not really a checkpoint, but I basically did that when I tried to finish a level. It was Halo 3 on the level where you save Cortona(second to last level IIRC) on Legendary.

For those of you who don't know or remember, you have to essentially fight your way through a ship, get Cortana and then basically backtrack your way out of it. It was by far the hardest level in the game.

Anyways, by the time I was at what was the last hallway before finishing the level, all I had on me was a few plasma nades, a plasma pistol and a plasma rifle with about 20 or so shots left. Basically, I was SOL. I tried to secretly take out a few enemies, steal their weapons, but I always ended up getting overwhelmed by everything else. I then backtracked a bit, found an invisible powerup, and just made a run for it. I finished the level with just a bit of health left.
