Have you ever played WoW

I'm not knocking it, nor am I praising it. I've never played the game, but so many of my friends lives have been consumed by it. I know this crowd is very likely to be bias... but we'll do the poll anyway. Curiousity killed the cat, not the horse.

I know this topic might fit better in the general gaming board, but I'm trying to look at this from a social perspective, not a game perspective, so if it's ok with you mr moderators, let's leave it here awhile... less you want me to sic RegalSin on you.

Edit: Fine, I'll stop pouting

No, but I know a lot of people that do. I plan to stay away from the drug that is WoW. I'm sure it's an awesome game, but it takes so much of your time away. Sure you save a ton of money since that's the only game you'll be playing for quite some time, but I'd rather not get addicted to it.

Been playing since the first open beta. I'm not as hardcore as the others that have played as long as I have though. It took me a full year to get my first character to lvl 60 and almost another year to get my second character there as well. I've taken several breaks from the game, mostly during the summer when there are just so many better things I could be doing with my time. But I always come back to WoW at some point, invigorated and motivated to play and enjoy. Am I addicted? I don't think so but I can see how WoW can be addictive.

I've had 3-4 stints of playing. Have 4-5 level 40 or so characters. I just can't get into it very much. I think it's the best MMO out right now, but it's not interesting enough for me to pay for it.

I used to be heavily into WoW (I have two level 60s, one on each side on different realms.). I don't really play anymore cause I have a 360 :D

I have one level 60 and two level 30's that I'm working on currently. I've been playing for about a year, heavy into the Molten Core raiding at the moment. This game is the reason why I have not taken the next-gen plunge yet. I don't have time for anything else and honestly WoW keeps me entertained enough. I don't need anything else.

I got hooked about a month ago, and it's still the only game I play since then. Everything else sits. Am I addicted...so far!

QFT.

No. I used to play FFXI and that was bad enough. Took WAY too much time at higher levels, so I can imagine how consuming WoW could be, even though I've thought about trying it. Much better to never start!

Then you don't know what you are missing. Blizzard found the perfect balance for leveling. No longer do you have to grind ala Everquest to reach 60. You also get an XP bonus (known as rested XP) while you are away from the game. This gives you DOUBLE the XP gains so you level that much faster. :D

The precise reason I stopped playing FFXI. Grinding is shit on a single player game, and *losing* XP when you die is the single most dunderheaded goddamned design short of this next one:

I always wondered why MMO software retails for so damn much money. Why am I expected to pay $50 for something that will only work if I give them $15/month? Print those discs, put that shit in cereal boxes, put that shit in mail boxes, but that shit in church pews. It's not costing you squat to press those discs in such a high number.

So I finally caved and bought the game disc when (close enough for me) GS was selling a two-week full demo for $1.99. I still haven't used it yet (I'm afraid of devoting all my time to it), but it's there if I want to play it.

I agree. If they're going to charge you per month, then they should be giving away the client for free.

But since I hate the whole subscription idea, I've never played it. I don't want to pay money for a month, then feel forced to play it because otherwise I feel like I'm not gettting my money's worth.

So I play Guild Wars, which granted isn't quite the same thing, but at least I can play whenever I want, knowing the net cost will always be going down. Just picked up Nightfall last week from gogamer.com for $29.99, which was quite a good deal. Sadly, I haven't come close to finishing the campaigns in the original or Factions, never mind all the Player Vs. Player stuff, but I love supporting these guys and their non-subscription model.

It has consumed my life. But I am trying to stay away from it now, because I have shit in my life I have to deal with. Still love the game, will probably get the expansion and enjoy that for awhile, and hopefully not lose my life to it again.

I played FFXI for a year and a half, got Paladin to 55 among other things, then got bored and quit. Player WoW for 4 months, gained a new appreciation for FFXI and went back and leveled Warrior to 75... another year later and I haven't touched FFXI in about 3 weeks. Hmmm...

I played up untill 3 weeks ago when I fried my motherboard. Now I can't play WoW to keep me distracted untill my fiance lets me open my Wii on Xmas... talk about being in a bad state.

WoW is a quality, well-made game, but it can consume your life, and that's not good. My abusive ex actually turned nasty around the time we got into WoW. He said I was "obsessed" with it when I always played AFTER I got all my work and studying done for school, probably played less than him, and got like a 4.0 the whole year. Meanwhile he was in either the same, similar, or less strenous classes and he barely graduated high school. He tried to control my playing habits and tried to force me to stop playing for a month. When my parents found out, they were pissed and forced him to reinstall it. Because of this, he pushed me while I was in my chair. About this time I found out he had installed a keylogger on my computer so he knew all of my conversations to everyone. So it has bad memories for me, but it is a good game. Just don't it control you.

I played for a while last year. I enjoyed the game but I just couldn't put the time in. I played DAOC before and I think I MMORPG'd myself out. I think WOW is a great game, but MMORPG's are just too big of a time investment.

tried the demo, didn't get too into it. I

wouldn't really want to play with the people who I know that play it. they yell at each other for choosing to do other things than WoW.

That's cruddy :whistle2:(

I just played the 10 day trial a week or two ago. I'm really impressed with it. It's lots of fun, and looks great. The thing is, I mainly treated it as a single player game. I think I'm probably better off money-wise going with Oblivion and Final Fantasy 12-stuff like that.

Anyway, I have so many other games to play (thanks to CAG :) ) that I'm holding off on WoW for the time being.

My coworkers (who got me to try it) were playing as Horde, so I played a Tauren warrior (since the Tauren don't seem evil...unlike a lot of the Horde).

With regards to all the people who says WoW consumes their life: any hobby, whether it be video games, sports, or knitting can do this. There's nothing special or unique about WoW per se, it just happens to be a very well made and polished game. There has been many a single player computer game that has consumed me for hours, days, and weeks. The fact that WoW is an on-line RPG is irrelevent, in my opinion.

The only thing that might lead to a bit more of a "I must keep playing" behavior is the fact that it's subscription based, so some might feel that they're not getting their money's worth unless they play it a lot.

I haven't played it, but I most definitely would if I had a computer that was able to run it. I've been a fan of Blizzard games for as long as I could remember, especially of the Warcraft series.

I played through the trial with Wombat a couple of months ago. It was somewhat fun, but it lost my interest rather quickly. I just never get into these MMO games and so it just ended up being a poor man's Oblivion to me. I think I got close to the max level allowed on the demo and then I just lost all desire to play.

This is the third MMO game I've played and none of them have clicked with me. I like the Phantasy Star Online series the worst and I honestly think I enjoyed my time with FFXI more than WoW, but that could have just been because I was playing it on the 360 and I prefer console gaming.

Why would I need to play this crap. I already did this gig with PSO for GCN. If not everything on GCN until everybody kept FSODing each other fearing that people cheat. I mean WTF PSO was cheat city. Oh and the Japanese cheat also.

When I lost all my files for the third time that is. No more stinking SEGA jacking my account when they can't even cock block FSOD. Also you can't aviod that unless you use a cheat device or mess with your saved game.

The only RPG that I want to play online is the one I want to create.
I did it in PSO why would I need to do it another game that is DAD based and you can't even get to level 100.

Not 100% sure what you're saying, but World of Warcraft is a very different game from Phantasy Star Online. AFAIK PSO is kind of like Guild Wars (except you have to pay for it) in how it handles online. It's not really massivly multiplayer the way World of Warcraft (or Everquest, or Final Fantasy 11, etc.) are.

There's no question World of Warcraft is a great game. The huge world alone is a real achievement.
Not 100% sure what you're saying,
That's pretty much how he operates.

I played WoW every night for about a year and a half, had 4 level 60s, raided my ass off and did pretty much everything that was in the game at the time.

The problem was, I never stopped buying console games. I would open them, play for an hour and then think "I wonder what my guild is doing..."

In the middle of a stockades run a few Months back on the way to my 5th 60, I decided I had pretty much enough and quit cold turkey. I'm having a really good time catching up on all the games I've missed in the last year and my fiance is happier since she can sit on the couch and hang out while I'm playing my consoles instead of having me locked in a room on voice chat. Also, I forgot what it was like to have a Pause button. It's nice.

I don't regret spending so much time on it and I did have a lot of fun. I'm not selling my account or anything and a few months after the expansion hits I may return to see what's new. But like anything else, as long as you know when to stop and do something else, its a fairly harmless way to spend your free time.

After lookig at the poll results I'm a bit shocked. If we can imagine this is a pretty good representation of the rest of the country (we are all pretty strong gamers), it looks like wow is hemorrhaging players at a faster rate than I thought.
I wonder how many people will jump back in once the xpak is out.

As for ideas on how to quit.... Cold turkey is the best way I have found. Don't play for a week and do all the things you enjoyed before wow came along and see if you have the same strong desire to go back to it after a week.
I cant say if this is a good idea if you are one of those competitive guild people though. You might just want to go back to playing and play twice as much to catch up.
I quit 3 times ( yes i now its not actually quitting) but the last 2 i didnt enjoy playing once I stopped the first time. I only went back because my freinds asked me to. I ended up using it a a fancy chat room and didnt really level up.

Once you get your head out and realize what it does you have a hard time going back. I wish I had the time that I wasted playing it, back.
This is definitely not a game for those with addictive personalities.

I loved the game until I hit 55. Then it felt like work and I quit shortly after hitting 60 and doing MC 6 damn times and getting one item.

I just started playing it tonight for the first time. Is it pretty much solo til you get up to the higher levels? Cause right now it doesn't seem very MM. But it's been fun so far. I had to quit before I was up all night playing. I'll continue tomorrow.

What race are you playing as? Because clearly you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Hogger yet.

I'd say the game is about 70% solo-able, more so at the beginning because they want to get you use to how the game works before throwing you in with other people. There's a fantastic learning curve built in.

Sooner or later they will start throwing Elite quests at you, which are quests in which the enemies are the same level as you but much more powerful than the normal suckers you come across. Those you will need a group for.

Depending on if you are playing horde or alliance, you get to your first dungeon (instance) around levels 14-18, and that's where all the grouping starts to really come in, for better or for worse.

I was level 14 when they let me go on my first...instance? Grouping? I don't know what you'd call it. Everyone else was closer to level 20, and it was basically just the RPG equivalent of a death match. Seemed pretty boring even if I wasn't getting killed every five seconds because everyone else was 5 levels higher. I finally just left.

Hopefully the end game isn't all like that.

Overall the interface is fantastic, but there are some rough areas-like that, where they dump you in and give you no explanation for what it is, or why you're there, or what to do once you get there.

Been playing the game since release. I have 2 level 60s and I am the GM of a raiding guild. It's a pretty solid game overall, but the game is currently in a state of flux right now until the expansion hits in mid January. At the endgame, many people feel it isn't worth the time and energy to go after the best loot because the expansion basically evens the playing field again.

I played from closed beta all the way until about 6 months ago (So about 1.5 years?). I've got two 60's and various other chars. I would say that I was most definitely addicted to it. I would pretty much blow people off (including my girlfriend) to sit and raid Molten Core on a Friday night for 6 hours and go through 4 or 5 gin and tonics. Fortunately I did finally get bored but I feel kind of retarded for how obsessed I was with the stupid game. Stay away from WoW if you are weak willed.

P.S. I am going to buy the expansion and reactivate my account and restart the vicious cycle in January.

I'm playing as a Warrior Night Elf. It's good to know that I wil have some time to get used to playing before I get into the grouping though. Don't think I would be able to tolerate all the n00b talk right away.

ditto, never played it, probably will never bother with it. i just dont play games that much anymore, i dont have the time.

Hmm, never touched the game. But I do play this one MMORPG... it's called life. Right now I'm a level 20 college student.

I have played diablo and guild wars, but never for a long period of time.

The thing is PSO is just Phantasy Star the game but it is on the internet. When you go online you get to make your adventures and exploration threw the world of Phantasy Star.

The thing is SEGA is not even trying when they put Phantasy Star Online. What is so great about PSO is the game itself plays like a Regular Phantasy Star or even Zelda. PSOffline is the Phantasy Star equivelent to Zelda: OOT.

On the topic of MMORPG's there is no such thing. It is an RPG or not an RPG. PSO did the job of a MMORPG very well. Where you can just hang around and chat, play ball in the ball room, raom the world of PSO, gain various items, and even build a relationship. Yes going into a game is limited to a party of four but at least it is diffrent everytime you go.

WOW, FF11, and EverQuest is a joke when compared to PSO.

EverQuest and WOW has too many dickless dorks, geeks, and $$$$s. The EverQuest Community is the real world is scary looking. WOW gameplay is like playing DAD or Wizard and Warriors online.

I do not hate DAD but I prefer a Japanese Online game over a European Harry Potter Lord of the bleh any day.

On the topic the original Warcraft was and is kinda boring and meaningless when you think about it. I mean all these Stratergy games yet have poor stratergists out there bombing this and that.
