Hello CAG's. I know some of you are having trouble joining friends while on Xbox Live. The reason? Your ports may not be open. Here is a simple guide on how to fix this slight problem so you can enjoying gaming with your friends without any of these "Connnection Problems". This guide is intended to make your NAT on your Xbox 360 go from Moderate or Worse to Open. Open being a very good thing.

~*~Making a Static IP Address on your Xbox 360~*~

Ok here you will need a some info from your computer. Go to Start

I can't help but think I had something to do with this. ;) Seriously though, thank you a ton for typing all of this up. And thanks again to Trakan for his quick responses.

My NAT was originally Open to begin with. Just in case, I set my router to open 88 and 3074. I'll see if I have any more problems down the line, and if I do, I'll give the static IP a shot.

Also, FWIW, my router is a D-Link DI-524 and to open the ports, I went to Advanced>Virtual Server, in case anybody else has this particular router.

Think this would help with WMC and streaming music/pics to the 360? It worked fine, then all of the sudden just.. stopped working. May have been when we added the wireless network, but I still use the wired one for my 360.. so.. i dunno

It could be a problem. Every IP Address on your Router will change. It may not change daily, but it could change every 2 or 3 days or maybe even weekly. Setting up a static IP Address on your Xbox 360 will never let the IP Address on it change at all. So if you getting Open connections using 192.168.1.1 you want to keep it that way. I'd use this to try and pin point which IP Address works the best with Xbox 360 meaning giving you an open connection.

No prob. Make sure you do both TCP and UDP. Your question made me think of asking Pimp to make this on AIM, heh. I'm glad he did. Should help a bunch of people.

D-Links are known to have problems with XBL, at least in my experience.

Thanks X-Dude! Maybe you can link this thread in your Xbox 360 Guide and FAQ ;)

May I clarify something?

Placing your Xbox in the DMZ is essentially the same as opening ports in a firewall except you've removed the restrictions on all the ports rather than only the ones you intended. Any device on the DMZ is on the outside of the firewall and therefore not subject to port restrictions.

From personal experience, I have found that placing the 360 in the DMZ is better than simply opening ports but I'm certain each person's experience will be different based on the type of router equipment being used.

EDIT: I agree with Trakan. I've used two different D-Link routers with my 360 (one was 360 "certified") and both cause connection issues until I placed the 360 on the DMZ.

It may not be that confusing, at least it wasn't for me. When saints row came out and I couldn't get int the room zew gave me some sort of an idea of what to do, but I didn't get much out of it. All I did though was look at my 360's IP address, then go to my 192.168.1.1 go to the dmz thing enter the 360's IP address and enable it. I have had no problems since.

Sorry I'm no help there, but simply, take your 360 IP snd put it in the DMZ and enable it. maybe you'll get lucky and it will work out.

*edit*
mine is also d-link

Yep. I do both though just incase ;)

That's true, it's redundant. Your essentially opening two specific ports, and then to make it DMZ you are opening every port anyway.

Just make sure you set a Static IP. If you don't and your IP changes on your computer to what your 360's IP was then your computer will be out of the firewall and no one wants that.

I will gladly add it later today if I can put Gears of War down. Pimp, lemme know if you just want me to link it or put that whole OP in the thread.

I don't mind. Whatever you feel is better, I'll go with it. Thanks.

I had so many problems with that router, I thought it was a piece of shit. Turned out I had some settings wrong with my router connection to my modem and all sorts of confusing stuff that I had to become an expert at to fix.

Now the router has been running strong for three months, no problem. Thank you BF 2004! (or was it 2003?)

My NAT was "Open" as well. I'm not going to mess with the ports yet.

I couldn't figure out how to do the Port Forwarding with my router (DI-524), so I just did the DMZ thing with my 360's IP address. Seems to be working, but I'm an idiot at this stuff. Is there something else I need to do?

You pretty much just want to create a Static IP Address then do the DMZ hosting. You should have a Open connection. If not try an different IP Address for your 360.

ok, I think I missed something. I have been trying to get into some games of Call of Duty 3, so I did the network test and my NAT says "OPEN" but I thought I would try it anyway thinking it couldn't hurt. I went through all the steps of making a static IP and then of opening ports and enabling DMZ. Now the test says moderate every time and I have tried removing the port openings and jsut using the DMZ also I have changed my Static IP many times.

To me it sounds like you need a IP Add sweet spot. Just keep tring different combos. 192.168.1.100 ....... 192.168.1.101. ......... 192.168.2.100 anything close and keep your numbers close dont go too off the wall. You shoud hit a good one.

alright 1.100 worked thanks

Thanks for posting this. I screwed around some earlier and have yet to fix the drops, but hopefully playing around with it a little more will.

No problem. Good Luck Bro.

Just remember for those running dynamic IPs - if you have UPnP set to enabled on your router, it will allow applications to open ports as necessary so you don't have to mess with port forwarding if you don't want.

It turns out i just needed to update the firmware on my router. I think after the update microsoft required the new firmware....idk but my old firmare was from like 2001 or 2003

Ive been trying to get my NAT to OPEN for awhile now. Ive tried several static IPs and have opened their DMZ but it always stays moderate. I think my router, U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461), is the problem. Anybody have any ideas?

Keep tring different Ip Ad's. Once you've tried 20 without luck then seek extra help.

I got an open NAT without a static IP, but i had two ports open on my router. What, if any, are the drawbacks to opening ports for forwarding?

Unfortunately I am on a wireless network, G, running through 2 walls. I get a pretty good connection but not the best.

Well without a static address on your Xbox 360 that means your router can change the IP address on that. I'm not too sure if there are any drawbacks on opening ports besides hackers being able to get in from those open ports.

Thats why you need to set up a static address on your 360 so it will never change its IP add.

Note: If your router's "homepage" has a link that displays attached devices that will really narrow down your ip address to try.

Well so the first time I did this I failed on the DNS so I changed my xbox 360 to a different IP and then everything passed and instead of Strict under NAT I got Moderate. So the test to live passed with flying colors but I tried the media connectoin test again and It still didn't work, failed on PC Selected. I have windows media 11 and I have shared my device. I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router but everything is hooked up, the wireless is for my ds^^ I occasionally couldnt join invites or lost connections in games but it wasnt a big problem, we'll see how it goes now. If you coulld help me with the media connection, you could just pm me thanks.

well now I have an OPEN NAT and I still can't join any games in Call of Duty 3. I have 3 friends in three different games and I can't join any of them.

Are they sending YOU an invite?
Are they sending YOU an invite?
no i never thought of that.... of course they are sending me invites. Also I can't join quick match and custom match is empty. It all worked yesterday after going through all the steps and now it doesn't.

I mean if no game sessions are available shouldn't that come right after searching.... and not joining...

the best part is when I was doing the static IP and port fowarding it would say OPEN on one test and Moderate on the next and when I do automatic everything it says OPEN everytime, now for the MP test........... "No game sessions availab.... and now it just through me in a game, this is messed up.
no i never thought of that.... of course they are sending me invites.
Well, I'm not a mind reader pal. I was genuinely trying to help you and needed clarification on that one simple point which you neglected to mention.

Question. I have a computer that is directly connected to my router and a laptop thats next to my 360 on the same network. Can I use any computer on the network or the one directly connected to the router. I really want the laptop to be able to directly connect to the xbox 360 so I can have my music on it.

Man this is too hard i don't understand what "Open up your Internet Browser ( IE, Firefox, etc ) and type in your Router's Default Address. Should be: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.2 Something on the lines of these. Now Once you get to your Router's Home Page find something that says Port Forwarding/Enable Applications/ or something along those lines.
This will allow you to set the ports that need to be opened." means

Man everyones saying the same thing! i dont know my router model and i dont know what "Xbox Live 360 from the menu" means... someone help me!!!!
