HAWX Flightstick Pre-orders 49.99 PS3/X360 Gamestop

Fry's Electronics has had this flightstick for about a month (originally bundled with AC6). I tried it and returned it the next day. The deadzone was really bad. I ended up getting the ace edge from BB instead which still has a deadzone but not nearly as bad as this thing.

I do think it's weird that this was anounced at CES and no one else has it, yet its been at Fry's for awhile, here is the link. http://shop3.frys.com/product/5800233?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Looks decent enough. Though I'm wary of Madcatz, at least it has open handholds. My hands are too big to use the AC6 one properly.

Can you tell me what the "dead zone" is? I was thinking about picking a stick up, but I'm not sure now...

The dead zone is the range of motion of the stick where there is no response from your aircraft. So for example, if a stick has a large deadzone you have to move it a significant way to the right before your aircraft starts to roll right.

Personally, I don't find the dead zone on this stick a problem: I'm able to calibrate my movements of the stick accordingly. It might be a problem with precision maneuvers like flying through a tight series of small rings, but not in combat.

This stick's packaging does mention HAWX, but it's not officially called the "HAWX Aviator." I wonder if it's really the official HAWX stick.

$50 for that vs. the bundle from BB for $100 (at the end anyway, now it isn't even on the website), which had a throttle too? Seems like this one is the costly one.

"The dead zone" means that there is usually a 360 degree movement (usually small movements) that won't register in the game. In other words, when you move the stick in the "dead zone" your plane just sits there. The bigger the 360 degree zone, the more you have to move the stick to get it to register.

I heard the same things about this stick, which is why I'm glad I bought the AC6 bundle at Best Buy for $99. I haven't opened it yet (no time) but if it works with HAWX, then I'll be one happy CAGer!

It's really a Saitek stick; says Saitek on the package. Mad Catz bought Saitek.

What's the issue with the ACE EDGE handhold? Is it too small top-to-bottom, or between the stick body and the handle, or both?

is this worth the buy? i might consider buying this for a friend of mines. his birthday is coming up in a few days.

The Saitek (Mad Catz) has an integrated throttle. Not as sexy as a separate throttle, but since I sit on a sofa and not in a cockpit, it's easier for me to just have one controller I can hold securely in my lap.

I don't know if the separate ACE EDGE throttle provides more precision, but I find that AC6 doesn't seem to respond to fine throttle control: I seem to use three ranges: at full throttle, throttled back, or somewhere in between.

The part where your 4 fingers rest on the stick is too small for me. The AC6 one has a guard over that area and I have to play with my pinky hanging off the joystick and even then it's a bit tight. Otherwise I love the AC6 stick. My hands are just too darn big for it.

...which may explain why this has Saitek all over it, with the only mention of Mad Catz confined to the bottom of the box.

I understand that.. However, I'm not going to support Mad Catz by buying their stuff because they suck ass.

I love the immersion I get with the Ace Combat 6 CE stick. I'll be the first to admit that the gamepad is likely better for control, but damn if it isn't fun.

For those of you who are down on mad catz (and I'm one of them, I've always found their product to be inferior), remember that somehow they did get the rights to making most of the RB2 accessories. So possibly they've improved recently.

That said, I would never replace the Hori AC6 stick unless it exploded and was completely irreparable.
