Anybody interested in imports, EzyDVD is doing a 2 for 50 (or 25 a pop) sale for Universal titles.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/promo.zml?pid=647&ddat=1&dsal=1&dper=1

Import exclusive titles include

Rambo 1-3
The Holiday
Total Recall

And there is also non-combo versions of

Children Of Men
Smokin' Aces
American Werewolf In London
Miami Vice

for you combo haters.

The really nice thing is that the AUD is weaker than the US dollar. So I was able to grab Rambo: First Blood for only 27.23 AUD (US $22.39)
picked up mine at BB tonight...ended up being the last one in store...they also let me buy it in store so that i get the 2 free HD-DVDs...so i walked out of there with the player, transformers, and Face-Off for $108.xx
wait, these go on sale at 12:01 correct?
According to the 2 walmarts i have talked to...the HD DVD Player goes onto the floor starting right at 8 AM

thats queer, prices may very in wi, ok, ut, hi, puerto rico. fuck that bullshit, Im not waking up/skipping my first class to attempt to get one. I might just jump on the hd-a3 at best buy for 250 with the 9 total free dvds.

Why did mine say they're opening at 6am? -_- I guess I'll need to call back to see exactly when the HD-A2 will be on the floor. Supposedly they're getting 20 in! Do they ever limit how many you can purchase?

Might want to add this to the first post OP:

Firmware Update Information for Owners of Toshiba HD DVD Players: Models HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W, and HD-D2

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/notices/hddvd2firmware.asp

Basically, this firmware update adds support for 1080p/24Hz output to the HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players. For the HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players, it adds more on-screen language display options. In addition, this firmware update improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web- enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

So basically, a FULL 1080p HD-DVD player for LESS THAN $100.00!!!

Please Enjoy!

Alex

Sorry guys, I was wrong about the HD-A2, my apologies. I just got really excited about a potential full 1080p player for less than $100.00.

My bad,

Alex

Might be a dumb question but I just woke up from a nap, if you pick the player at wal-mart tomorrow are there any free HD-DVD offers available to go with this from toshiba?

Wait... that doesn't say the A2 will get 1080p/24Hz support.

Yes, Toshiba's 5 Free rebate still applies.
Oh wait, zewone's right. The A2 isn't upgradeable to 1080p. Oh wells, maybe my bro-in-laws will want one.
I wonder if that kind of logic will be a deterent to other folks (read Wal-Mart crowd) who aren't familiar with HD. How many of those consumers are ever gonna notice the difference between 720p and 1080p or will even own sets that take advantage of it? They'll probably think 720p is vastly inferior, but hopefully that doesn't keep them from buying into it.

agreed totally. I think they will see HD player for $98.87 and buy it.

and then proceed to hook it up their 480i CRTs.

I think that its not Joe Schmo that's going to buy the HD-A2 but rather, the intelligent consumers who have been reading about this online sale since yestereday.

One could argue that the intelligent consumer does not shop at Wal-mart. :D

These are really going to go fast I bet. I would be at walmart as soon as the sale started if I wanted one. 60,000 to go around all of their stores is not much at all.

I sell TV's and I can tell you that anytime a customer comes in and wants to buy an HDTV they automatically choose the 1080p TV's regardless of size and price. They think that 720p is super old Tech and is not good. Funny thing is most people still think once they buy an HDTV they will have an HD Picture. :D

I could see people not thinking this player is good enough. Also a lot of people still don't know what Blu Ray or HD DVD is.

60K is all they are getting? Man so thats like .5 units to each Walmart.

my favorite is when people buy a 32" or 37" 1080p display, set it up about 7ft (or more!) from their couch and then brag about the quality. i think most folks would be hard pressed to differentiate 1080p/720p at even 5-6 feet on anything less than a 50" set.

(i have two 720p sets (one 37", one 50"), and given my experience with both, i won't be buying a 1080p set any smaller than 60", considering my viewing distance (about 7.5 feet in the living room). in the bedroom, my usual viewing distance to my 37" set is 10.5' (when laying in bed), and i openly admit that at that distance, HD/SD are more or less indistinguishable from one another. i have to sit close to the foot of the bed to get the "full effect".)

i also love when people run out, buy an HD set, and then hook their 480i/p DVD player up and yammer on about the amazing picture.

Agreed. I have a 37" LCD now and I don't think I would upgrade . I also sit about 7- 8 feet away. I'd probably go with a 1080P at 50'+.

The funny thing is that contrast ratio, color saturation, and color accuracy are three things more important than resolution (1080i vs 1080p). I look at tvs like diamonds, there is more than carat wieght, there is cut, color, and clarity. I hear people talk about 1080p vs 1080i and just laugh. Besides, nothing in the near future will be broadcast in 1080p. And if it was, then side by side test have shown that, given everything else is equall, the difference in 1080p and 1080i is so small that many times it is not picked up by the human eye.

This player at this price is a no-brainer and a great deal!

Good to see that some people still have faith that the public at large are intelligent consumers...

just ordered through best buy.com google cache for 99. Most likely will get cancelled, but figured ill take my chances. Grand total was 113 for shipping and tax.
Good to see that some people still have faith that the public at large are intelligent consumers...
At least they know that 720 is indeed smaller than 1080 on the number line. You have to give them that.

Didn't mean to derail the thread with my response to zew, but I guess that an OT 1080i vs p argument was inevitable.

It's a vicious cycle because the sales folk (retail and manufacturers) do "upsell" 1080p as a feature and it is theoretically more desirable than 1080i, exception being smaller TVs where the human eye won't see a difference.

Also, if I already own a 1080p TV, why wouldn't I want a player that takes advantage of the technology?

If I already have the 360 HD-DVD Add-On(which I would still keep) and a stand alone LG upconvert DVD player(which I would E-Bay if I buy the A2) do I really need this? Just to let you know I have had the HD-DVD add-on almost since it launched and have only watched 2 movies in it.
60K is all they are getting? Man so thats like .5 units to each Walmart.
That would be more like 19 per store, Even thought wal mart seems like a super big evil corporation(and they are) according to there financial statements they only have 3,289 stores in the US.

a possible plus (for me anyway), and i'm speculating here, as i don't own the HD-A2, is that i imagine it'll be considerably quieter than the 360 combo. don't get me wrong, i usually watch most movies cranked pretty loud, and this for the most part drowns out the 360/HD DVD combo, but in quieter moments in many movies (especially those with primarily front-staged audio), from almost 8 feet away, i can hear the 360tron humming along quite distinctly.

from here, it doesn't sound like you'll get much use from this thing, as you've mentioned only using the HD DVD drive a couple times.

(however, i thought i might be in that same camp myself, and then i remembered my Netflix membership. for only a few bucks, you can always use Netflix [or whoever] to rent the occasional HD DVD, which i've begun doing. i was already using them for DVD rentals, so it was an easy "switch", but i still recommend using an online rental service, even if you're not already a member.)

You sir, need to get Netflix. Most of the movies I rent on Netflix are either BluRay or HDDVD. I would say that I watch 5-7 movies a month in HD-DVD.

is it possible to call toshiba up and ask them to change what i selected as my free 5 hd dvds? cuz i looked again and it seems as tho i missed some...was TMNT and Syriana ever on the list?...well anywayz...do you think they'd let me do that? i sent in for the dvds about...2 weeks ago...and what is the # to call them at? HELP SOMEBODY!
So what's the exact time this starts? I guess it varies by store...
It says 8am on the website. A guy on avsforum claims he is a manager of electronics at a walmart and said it will last through sunday, but they don't expect supplies to last that long.

wondering which is better value?

I have the BB deal: 360 attachment + Heroes + Planet Earth + Ultimate Matrix for ~$200

do I get the A2 for $100 and get a couple of movies I actually want? $30 * 3 for ~$200

I have a couple of hours before the deal starts to decide I guess ...
what do you think my odds are of getting there around 3pm and them still having an A2 left, though i guess i could go on my lunch break
not good especially at 3pm. this deal is all over the internet.

sell the 360 attachment after doing the 5 dvd mail-in offer for about $100 and if you dont want the sets i am sure you can unload them for around $50 each

buy the A2 and send out the rebate for 5 more this way you end up with a decent library of movies before you know it for a nice price
Wait... that doesn't say the A2 will get 1080p/24Hz support.
Oh shucks, sorry that I missed it!!! I read the HD-A20 as HD-A2. My apologies!!!

Later,

Alex
What time are all you guys going?
I'm planning to get to WM an hour before they go on sale. If that turns out to be too late, then I'm hitting Starbucks and coming home. I'll just have more money to spend on Black Friday, and there'll probably be another Hi-Def player discount then somewhere anyway.

Score!

Went into Wal-mart before work today 6:30am and yep they were selling the HD-A2 for $98. I picked up two one for my dad's Christmas gift and one for myself. I remembered to get two reciepts for the 5 free movie deal. That was sweet guys two HD DVD players for $210. Ohh one note after the lady rang up both players she was told my another shift manager that it was one per customer! Then another gentleman came back and said no limit so, you may have trouble with that if you want two. Anyway good luck guys thank you Walmart in Ga. for being good to me! Another gentleman was right behind me and said are you getting that HD player for the $98? I said yep! He said I'm going to watch if your's works I'm buying one too. The word is getting out!
