The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

Bleh, i still have my 360 addon for sale, doesnt look like ill even get close to the $80 i wanted for it. I did however just pricematch my A30 at Amazon to get $24 back.

WB Online store finally put up 'I Am Legend' for preorder - $26.95 before coupons.
I'll hopefully preorder this Friday along with Appleseed EX: Machina and Justice League

Feb 25% Off coupon: FBBM8

i noticed that i am legend on bd was 24.95.

what happenned to the 23.95 launch price on warner bd's?

also i saw the beowulf commercial and it did not mention hd dvd at all

if you don't mind waiting for rebates and are a FYE member, I Am Legend on both formats is 17.29 + tax, $3 or so cheaper than WHV

i want to trim down my selection a bit but the prices are just so shitty..

it sucks when hd movies are going for cheaper than the dvd movies.

Ironically i think the combo disks are going to keep their value better.

Pan's will be a biggie for a rare one. As for imports depending how long it takes Lion's Gate to get their shit together the T2 imports could be big. I'm really excited about the import sales.
So now Paramount's Blu again.
So now all HD DVD has is Weinstein.
lol Weinsteien bowed out of the HDM game a long time ago.

I'm not basing this on anything other than my brain, but I'd guess Weinstein will be back late this year.

I'd get I Am Legend from WHV, but after the debacle of last time I'm not too keen on dealing with them again (even if it did result in a few free movies)...anyone know if they got their shipping straightened out over the last few months?

Damn there's a lot of hate for HD DVD in the forums after the Warner/Toshiba news.

Getting pretty old with people saying you're wasting your money.

^ That blows... but I was only planning on renting that anyway, and since Netflix dropped HD DVD they wouldn't have gotten it anyway... I'll have to wait for the Blu.
Which forums?

I just wasted my money on Beowulf at walmart and I'm pretty happy about it.
beowulf hd dvd? they have it already? netflix still has it for hd dvd due soon so hopefully they are getting a few more hd releases

sold off my potter set on amazon, it really was just taking up space. I rather buy the movies seperately down the line. The only ones i would of kept on hd are 4 and 5 since they are superior to the bd versions with hdi and the network feature.

In reality though i bet the network features can be taken down at any point. I wonder whos hosting.

Never did get to try the net feature on part 5. :(

I am going to take a serious look at all my movies (and games) this weekend and decide on what needs to go. Have to pay a big bill to fix my car so im trying to offset my cost as much as possible.

got a $70 offer for my a2 on cl but im not sure i even want to sell it.

Yeah they had two copies displayed.
fuck, looks like Before The Devil Knows You're Dead has been canceled
Doh. I had actually ordered this one on Blu-Ray, only because it was in my gold box, but I would have gotten the red version otherwise. That's too bad.

This isn't necessarily for sure if you read what Geonosis posted on HDD. If you're concerned contact Paramount Studios and complain. Just because Toshiba pulled the plug doesn't mean current HD DVD owners won't still buy HD DVD's. To suggest otherwise would be absurd. In fact if Toshiba has pulled the plug and no royalties are there this might be a very promising proposition for a small studio and even Paramount making a small batch of copies. I actually think it would be smart if someone snapped up the tech. et al for HD DVD for the time being. I imagine Toshiba wouldn't charge terribly much.
If HD DVD owners really want it this could end up like the Dreamcast for the next few years. Just a thought. Also if Lossless is a problem studios shouldn't hesitate to use DTS-MA as well to get it at a lower bitrate.
edit: If anyone knows Craig Kornblau's number would you pm it to me. I'd like to contact him and shoot an idea. I'm afraid otherwise I'll just get deleted in the daily e-mail.
hows the pq? i think i still have those 3d glasses somewhere lol
I haven't even opened it yet, been too busy. The sad thing is, I got it early but probably won't have time to watch it till it's for sale everywhere.

:whistle2:s?? Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is released by Image Entertainment. That's why it (was) dual format. If it were Paramount, it'd be HD DVD exclusive.
So whats the best price for No Country for Old Men (I'm assuming an Import)?
Yup, it's an import and it's shaping up to be an expensive one.

Australia is getting it April 24th and would run you about $39.54 after VAT comes off and shipping goes on.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item_tt.zml?pid=798761&rid=0007593423

The UK is getting it May 12th and it would run you about $37.15 after VAT comes off and shipping goes on.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00147AK5S/

I'm conflicted. I could either pay $3 more to get it early but have the case with a ugly massive rating thing or I could pay less but have to wait almost 3 weeks more to recieve it.

I don't think that movie really lends itself to HD eyecandy. I'd just assume have the DVD.

Blah, who buys HD movies for "HD eyecandy"? I just want my movies in the best quality possible and for me, DVD just isn't cutting it anymore.
First one? So should I not buy this without watching the first one? Is the first one CGI as well or available in HD?
By the first, i meant the updated remake. It blends traditional animation with CG like Ghost in the Shell. If you have a decent upconverting DVD player definely get it. It can be found for under $15 and is well worth it.

Thanks for the tip...I'll have to pick it up soon then.
I hope the new T2 import still makes it out .
Ditto...when is that supposed to release?
I hope the new T2 import still makes it out .
It is.

Cinema world holds also after the announcement of Toshiba to give the hd up DVD format to the publication of planned hd DVDs. Titles like "terminator 2" and "the vorahnung", already announced, are to be published also on hd DVD, by cinema world on request were communicated. Still no decision gives it in addition whether also further new titles on hd DVD are announced or one will concentrate in the future alone on Blu ray the Disc. Terminator 2 will become presumably most extensive the film equipped with interactive functions, which was published so far in one of the hd formats. For the hd DVD the Authoring authoring-Studio Imagion developed extensive on-line features, which are not even possible up-to-date with Blu ray the Disc.

Wasn't betamax the better of the two when it and vhs were at war? I went with HD but with the PS3 and HD add on for the 360 I could play both. Also didn't the porn industry go with HD? I remember hearing that when this war started everyone saying that HD would chance are win because of them and that was how VHS won.

Anyway I plan on hiting up the firesales atleast for all the movies I want to see that are left. Not really alot more that I want to buy.

my local walmart had twice as many hd dvd's as normal sitting out yesterday when i went in...i have dreams of walking in there and I get to the electronics section just as one of the employees dumps all the hd dvds into the $5 bin......

Yes, betamax was the better design by all accounts....

porn is blu now too.

but i doubt people buying porn wanna see razor-burn in high def... jus saying.

Just picked up an HD-A30 today at Best Buy. It's down to $130 pretty much everywhere... Got an 8% reward zone bump plus used $10 in certificates... not bad. Also snagged a bunch of $12.20 movies at Deep Discount. Wanted to get a back-up player since the 360 add-on is not exactly the rock of gibraltar.

There have been a few saying they'll wait to pick up a stand-alone when the A30 gets below $100, but I just don't see it happening. The A35 is getting close to impossible to find for $150 and most stores around me are sold out of the A30 model.

Now to send off the 5 free movie rebate and cross my fingers...

At the CC near me they had 6 A-30's stacked up a few days ago so I am not too worried about waiting for them to get under 100. Plus I am sure amazon will still have enough to sell for cheap at some point.

I'm a ferocious worrier, though, Casey... you know that. :)

Anyway, it's a *great* player. Be aware, though, that there are no cables included... Had to pick up an HDMI and an optical (lousy receiver only does HDMI video pass).

Also, got a question that I hope you guys can help with. This will be the second 5-free-movie promo I've done to this address. The offer says one per household, does this latest rebate count as a new deal separate from the summer promo? Would hate to get stiffed on those...

What is a good HD dvd player to pickup? I will also be looking for a back up and one that can be used with my other tv. Would like HDMI and 1080p/i what ever one is the better. that way if i get a better tv down the road i will have a hd player that has the best connection i could get at the time.

I would suggest the A35 or at least the A20 since it still has 24p. The A35 more as it does DTS-MA and TrueHD(decoding for this codec also) bitstreaming as well as Analog 5.1 output. It has 24p of course too.
If you can find the Onkyo for like $300 new though I'd suggest you jump on it only. It's suppose to have great upconverting for DVD, it may have the fastest HD DVD reading for a standalone as well. The difference between this and the XA2 is I've been told it's not as buggy as it. The Onkyo I believe does also have the same features mentioned above as the A35 as well.

I'd totally agree with the A35, too, but it's getting *very* hard to find. In lieu of that, the A30 is still available. It's 1080p with all the expected hook-ups.

So I waited until I got paid yesterday, and of course now they're all gone....anyone know of a place offering refurbed XA2s besides Amazon marketplace for under $350? Overstock, ubid, and refurbdepot are all gone now. I'd like a place that's going to offer me some kind of extended warranty beyond the 90 day thing you get with refurbs.

If not I have no problem just getting an A35, but either I want to get my order in since Amazon actually raised the price on it a little bit.
