The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

i would like an a35 as well but i just can justify spending so much on it..

its crazy that the a3 is only $80

they have a refurb a30 for 80 too.

Im trying to see how much i can sell my a3 for to try and get an a30/a35

I would like an A30 for 100 bones as a backup...

Why are all the HD deal threads getting closed in the DVD, HD, Blu Ray Forum?

they have 23,000 positive feedbacks on ebay so i think they're pretty reliable

i only have first blood 2 and rambo 3

there's supposedly a "pitch" issue, but i didn't hear it in 2 or 3

in part 2, a couple scenes are really washed out and too bright. i dunno if its supposed to be like that but i actually was blinded by them.

3 didn't have that

both are above average PQ like 3.5 at HDD

no bonus features tho, only a trailer and a calibration thing for your TV
this website has a lot of australian hd dvd's for $9

they ship internationally too

http://www.dvdorchard.com.au/

rambo trilogy, t2 french (2 disk one), total recall, children of men non combo, bunch of others
I'd be very VERY careful using that site.

I've never heard of them before, those prices seem way too good to be true ($9 AUS would be 8ish American) and that isn't the T2 French edition (it's the normal 1 disc Australian release)

- edit Also you may want to edit that link because it links me to your account (or whoever originally posted the link). I can't see anything besides your basket but still.
Why are all the HD deal threads getting closed in the DVD, HD, Blu Ray Forum?
Looks like only two recent threads were closed. One ("$15 HD DVDs") was a repost of the Hollywood Video sale; the other did not involve deals and wasn't appropriate for that forum. There's no conspiracy here. The sheriffs of Nottingham are holding it steady.

dvdorchard is one of 12 major DVD online retailers in Australia selling:

* DVD movies, music and games
* Audio CD’s
* Books
* Boutique wine
Well, like I said, I never heard of them and their website looks like it jumped out of a timewarp from 1998. It's always better to be safe than sorry especially when they have no wiki page and when the only thing you can find on Google is links to their website/ebay store.
Someone over on HDD said that Universal knocked all their titles down to 9.99 AUS which is why they are so cheap.
I don't see those types of prices on EzyDVD (biggest Aussie DVD website/70+ B&M stores) which makes me think that statement is false.

- edit
Has anyone ever ordered from them and what is the First Blood HD version like?
I owned it and it was ok. Very soft with a cool menu (giant Rambo knive)

Interesting, so i go to checkout @ DVDorchard and someone named Robert Hermanson's information is entered in there; all except for the credit card info (good for him, i'd be kinda mad if a glitch caused my CC info to be linked for everyone to see.
So apparently the HD DVD addon has been discontinued....
Microsoft won't make any new ones but will still service ones under warranty (is it 1 year or 90 days?) Either way I hope this drive doesn't crap out on me since I got it Nov. 06.
Also, got a question that I hope you guys can help with. This will be the second 5-free-movie promo I've done to this address. The offer says one per household, does this latest rebate count as a new deal separate from the summer promo? Would hate to get stiffed on those...
So, uhm... anybody know if this will get rejected? Rich? Anybody with multiple players... any luck in getting the promo to work?

90 days.

I had to fight tooth-and-nail awhile back to have them fix it 10 days after my warranty expired.
So, uhm... anybody know if this will get rejected? Rich? Anybody with multiple players... any luck in getting the promo to work?
If you're doing the two different promotions, the one that ended 09/30/07 and the one that ends 02/28/08, then you shouldn't have an issue.

If it's two copies of the same promotion, then that might be an issue. Maybe send the second one to another address, like work/SO/parents?
I would suggest the A35 or at least the A20 since it still has 24p. The A35 more as it does DTS-MA and TrueHD(decoding for this codec also) bitstreaming as well as Analog 5.1 output. It has 24p of course too.
If you can find the Onkyo for like $300 new though I'd suggest you jump on it only. It's suppose to have great upconverting for DVD, it may have the fastest HD DVD reading for a standalone as well. The difference between this and the XA2 is I've been told it's not as buggy as it. The Onkyo I believe does also have the same features mentioned above as the A35 as well.
So I should get the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p or the Onkyo DV-HD805? The Toshiba HD-A35 1080p is at a great price but the Onkyo DV-HD805 they want 530 bucks for it. Dont know if it is worth that much.

Hell the Toshiba HD-XA2 1080p is going for 900 new when I saw the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p for 80 bucks new and the Onkyo DV-HD805 was 530 new. Why so high for the new ones and any guess as to when the prices might go down or should I buy asap after looking else where for a lower price. I really want to get one new and not used. Always have issues with used but not so much new. It seems like what everyone has always told me about things that are used ends up being true. You get used you get someone elses problems.

The A35 for $80 new I'd suggest you jump on it especially if it's an authorized dealer/retailer. If that is true you still have time to buy it and take advantage of the 5 free deal.
The Onkyo I wouldn't suggest buying for the price you listed.

i was wrong it said save 73 bucks. it is 226 at amazon.com

is the Toshiba HD-XA2 even worth geting at 900 bucks? Or I could get a refurbished one for 300. I really don't want to pay more then 100 bucks but I do want one incase the one on my 360 goes out or the 360 goes out. Tempted to bite the bullet and get the A35 for 226 only my luck places will lower them to around 100 bucks, and still have them in stock but if I don't order it they wont have them in stock and I will have to get one that is shit. Damn you bluray.

I'm still trying to find a comparison of the xa2 and the a35. All I can find is that the xa2 is the top of the line second gen and the a35 is the top of the third gen. However nothing says what is the better player of the two.
If you plan to watch DVDs on the player, the XA2 features the HQV chipset for upscaling.
It's pretty much the best.
Yeah but the a35 does upscaling also. I have read that the xa2 is the best atleast when the reviews were wrote. I would think a gen 3 would be better then a gen 2 but that is not always the case. However I dont want to spend 900 bucks on one. I'm going to keep looking but all reviews for both are starting to look the same as other reviews for the units. I think I have read the same review for the xa2 on 4 different sites and the same goes for the a35.

Yeah, but the A35's upscaling is budget level, and it's deinterlacing is broken. (all 3rd gens are)

XA2 is the answer you seek.
It has high end upscaling.

If I were you, I'd just buy a BD player.
Upscaling isn't worth that much.

correct.

While its nice to have a good player that can upscale, it pretty much blows compared to true hdm.

I could of sworn that the a35 had a better processer than the a2/a3 for upscaling.. but w.e

The xa2 is just wayyyy out of the price range that i feel like spending on a "dead" player, i much rather buy the hd/bd rom for the pc (or even the solo bd since i have my addon)

Digging through the reviews, it seems like anyone who has an XA2 is keeping it, and anyone who doesn't have one is trying to find an XA2, or an A35 as a backup player.

I ended up with one from RefurbDepot.com and I bought it with a 3 year extended warranty on it. Only other place was uBid.com that had them at a reasonable price, and it was cheaper than RefurbDepot.com, though RD.com said it came with all accessoires in a factory box from Toshiba, which mine did. So far, it's been a stunningly good player, though I need to test out some DVD upscaling on it.
Ouch, Paramount pulls a Paramount and cancels a release that they had just announced.

looks like you can hold off on your smugness a little longer

UPDATE: 2/25/08, 3:00pm ET
Although Paramount has removed 'There Will Be Blood' from its press site as reported below, the title may not in fact be cancelled. According to retail reports, the studio is still planning an April 8th release date, but has put an embargo on release details until March 4. Stay tuned...

Yeah, I still saw Blades of Glory on all websites too before they pulled it the week before.

I hope some kind of delay means there'll be a version in the other format, this film is worth watching.
Good price.
Also that Dark Knight cartoon/movie is indeed coming to HDM (not sure if both formats)

I remember you being interested in that.
Yeah...awesome news...I hope it comes out on HD DVD.

Imagine that, HighDefDigest rushing to post old news without actually checking all of the facts.

It was down for almost a full day yesterday.

From what I've heard. at least with one person, the 1080p24p are both equal with XA2 to A35. I had read in a review the A35 is shitty for deinterlacing 1080i discs but how many of those will the average person buy or even find for HD DVD's? As for the Onkyo being rebadged unless it's confirmed the XA2 will bitstream DTS-MA I'd suggest one buy the Onkyo if they really want the Reon upscaling.
I'm sorry but the DTS-MA bitstreaming is a HUGE thing, what with the European HD DVD's ONLY having that for Lossless when they have it.

From what I'd read, it seems like the XA2 has it now in the 2.8 FW, though again, I haven't seen a specific confirmation to that yet.
