The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

Anybody else digging these "firesales"?

They're almost a blessing since, thanks to the low prices, it's allowing me to backtrack and pick up some of the movies I overlooked.

Just ordered Scent Of A Women, Payback and Midnight Run for $39.85 from Amazon...all three blind-buys :)

What firesales? Everything for the most part seem to be 30% off or some sort of bur x get x free. I was expecting all HD-DVDs for 10 bucks or less and box sets 20-30.

picked up Children of Men for $17.49 @ my local best buy along with a 10" yamaha home audi subwoofer open box for $60 (its the one that retails for $125)...McLovin these dealz!

Is it the YST-SW010? If it is that is a hell of a deal. I just bought that sub at Ultimate Electronics open box for 10% off. They had it for 99.99 so I ended up geting it for around 80 bucks. Starting to think I should have checked out best buy now. I just hate going in and not buying anything because they always have to ask why you are not buying somthing. I had 3 people trying to track down Beowolf and 30 Days of Night on HD and BD because I didnt see them. Took them 10 minutes and they had looked them up in the system. I saw Beowolf when they started to look for me and we past it 2 or 3 times. Sad when not only one but 3 best buy employees cant find somthing in the store and one admits that they put things in 10 different places.

Amazon took Bee Movie off their site...but my order hasn't been canceled yet. Make's me wonder if there was limited quantities that were released.

deep discount said they're shipping bee movie when someone asked them if they're shipping the HD

they might of gotten confused though

my FYE order hasn't been canceled yet either and its still on their site
its this one: YST-SW216
I think it might be the one above mine. That makes one hell of a deal. Thats what around 50% off because it was open? Stupid Ultimate Electronics and their 10% off BS. Oh well great deal.

That's good news...I'm thinking its going to be a rare gem if it indeed ships out.

now i read on AVS that someone called Dreamworks and they said they didn't even press the HD DVD, so who knows

i liked the movie, but if it is rare might think about keeping it sealed instead

edit: reading new posts it seemed someone called and they said it would be released on HD DVD

so i just got my hd dvd 360. anyways i know before on the 360 reg dvd it upconverted over vga. how better is the quality from upconverting to true hd dvd? worth it to get the hd dvd version of a movie that you already have on dvd?

Depends on who you talk to but 99% of the time, the HD-DVD is better than the DVD upconverted.

It's more sharp with more background details that are usually blurred in the DVD.
wow.i actually got my 5 free movies today....im shocked

im also interested in bee movie.. keep us updated
2nd rebate offer?

why hasn't Circuit City started selling off hd!?!? all my local ones have a pretty decent inventory of HD DVDs and they are pretty much the only store to not have a decent sale since the announcement (buy 3 get 2 for $30 each ISN'T a sale)
bought clerks 2 on hd-dvd. my first purchase. hopefully worth seeing my favorite movie in high def.
Love that disc, one of the more overlooked releases....it's jammed full of extra stuff that is actually entertaining. I may be wrong (don't have it in front of me) but I believe the documentary on disc 2 is in HD as well.

There is significant grain on the picture during the main film, but that is intentional. During the musical part it's easy to notice the difference (colors a lot brighter, grain removed).
im still holding out for the a35 but it just wont drop
A friend picked one up for me at TigerDirect today for $160.

just noticed they have it for 169 on their site..ofcourse shipping and tax blows

may have to pass by store

I got Things We Lost In The Fire a few days ago from Blockbuster. I didn't like the story but if you did, this would be a good purchase since the transfer is fantastic.
just noticed they have it for 169 on their site..ofcourse shipping and tax blows
Yeah, you're right, it was $169. $180.xx with tax.

no idea - i hope he's wrong, but why would he lie? he just posts reviews never anything else

people are saying he's a blu fan boy, but i read a couple of anti blu reviews from him

i already preordered mine and not going to cancel regardless

Still waiting for prices on HD-DVDs to drop even lower (or drop at all in Canada).
I'm waiting for the Planet Earth bundle I ordered at Discovery to come in. I REALLY want Planet Earth in HD.

Here's hoping Bee Movie ships Tuesday. My Amazon order shows its scheduled to be delivered on 3/13

EDIT:
With the war over and done with, I figured it makes much more sense to keep both HD DVD and Blu-Ray threads here in the DVD/HD DVD/Blu-Ray Deals Forum.

I wish Sweeny Todd was coming. It and Blood were going to be the first Paramount HD DVD releases with Lossless AND packed with HD extras.
i just saw a commercial for bee movie and it mentioned nothing of any high def release. something tells me that it isn't happening.
They never did before anyway...not for Shrek The Third, not for Beowulf and I'm sure Bee Movie is not an exception here either...Toshiba sucked balls with advertising, IMO that was their major downfall.
Eagerly waiting for Into the Wild and The Host to drop.
8 bucks at hollywood video for me on into the wild

I'm sure they will... my guess is it will be a 'mystery drop' like they do with the games all the time. I bet titles will start ringing up '9.99' or something.

Didn't see this posted, my local FYE pulled all the HD-DVD's off the shelf the other day, not sure if it was nationwide or not though.

Like I have already said most B&M stores will not have a big sale like everyone is thinking. Best Buy has the 30% off and chances are that is all they will have. Most others will do the same and you might get a few buy 3 get 2 free. From what I have been told by Best Buy employees is that they will chances are have no big sales. They are just going to sell till they run out and not order any more. I would think most others are like that also. Bad thing for me is no place around me has much in HD or even BD other then best buy. As for online we have already seen deals. If they would have sold the HD discs for the same as a normal DVD and packed them with everything in the normal dvd and more I think HD would have won. Hell I would have paid a little more for a player if the discs were around 15-20 bucks and not 25-30.

I'm thinking my HD-DVD add on is going south. My copy of The Matrix Reloaded in the Ultimate set wouldn't play. Last night I had a hell of a time trying to get The Wild Bunch to play, and just now the copy of American Gangster someone from highdefdigest sent me wouldn't play, though it was covered in scratches, so I don't blame that one solely on the player.

Is $50 new the best deal out there right now? I don't really want to chance it with a used player.

When I had the add-on, I solved playback issues by turning off the whole 360 with the HD-DVD I was having trouble with in the drive, then turned it back on. For some reason this usually worked, as opposed to starting the 360, then putting the disc in.

If you're sure the drive is bad (MS warranty might still cover it?), I'm sure the standalone players will be dropping more soon. I think the A3 is like $70 now. This has the advantage of:
a) better sound if you have HDMI
b) better upconvert on DVD
c) not having to run your 360 while watching a movie

I thought that was confirmed canned?

You know what's funny? I deleted all the cookies and whatnot from the drive and American Gangster played perfectly.

These recent deals in the forum have been so good, especially on Amazon. And I'd like to teach you guys a trick.

It's a nice combination of free super saver shipping and ordering things that take awhile to become in stock:

http://www.twenzor.org/amazon.png

I made 3 orders in the past 3 days to instantly lock in prices, but I made sure each order was a: Over $25, and b: had a movie that would take up to 3 weeks to get in, so I won't even be charged for these for yet another week, but I'll have them eventually.

If I had to pay *now*, I wouldn't be able to afford these.
Just came back from Fry's in Burbank - still no drops on HD-DVD prices ...
Weird, the Fry's on Hamilton Rd in San Jose had several $9.99 HD movies. Picked up Top Gun and Anchorman when they were on sale 2 weeks ago but they had several movies that were not advertised but had a $9.99 sticker on it. Off the top of my head, they had:

Mission Impossible 1
Mission Impossible 2
The Warriors
