Hip-Hop ain't dead~!! It's the D-d-d-d-d-discussion Thread!

I hate vaudervale villain and the other one as well, and I hate dangerdoom too.

but most ppl will greatly disagree with me. I'm more into his main releases as well as Madvillain.

interesting fact, I saw mfdoom's "first" performance on the west coast in 2002. He was there with King Tee, Apathy, Celph Titled, and Louis Logic (it was demigodz' first west coast show as well). It was a dope show!!

anyway this was still before his popularity grew like 500% and halfway thru his set.... the mask comes off!! I don't think that is something you will ever see again, I think.

but my friend was disappointed becoz Doom ended up being an old man w/ a big gut.

anyway,

emusic doesnt have the new Brother Ali yet (I think there are some releases now that emusic will not offer until the record has been available on retail for a period of time), so I got Revolutionary vol. 2 (as well as Champion EP to fill the Ali void). I hope I can get to listenin to it this month.

I also got these two:

I got no idea what they are lol, but I saw them in my hiphopsite.com newsletter and decided to judge a book by its cover

I feel you, man... I was really disappointed with The New Danger, then I saw him give two wackass, meandering, sing-song performances at The Breedlove Odyssey and Rock the Bells festivals. Last year's Tru3 Magic should've been the last straw for anyone else but the Black Star album and Black on Both Sides were just so perfect that he'd probably have to drop another five years' worth of trash before I wise up. I keep telling myself that Tru3 Magic was just a contract fulfillment and the next album is the real deal that'll put him back on top again.
Ghostface is the man, not my favorite, but definitely up there. I have played Fishscale way too many times to count.
I have a thing for the Pretty Toney album. Don't ask me why.
I have a thing for the Pretty Toney album. Don't ask me why.
I gotta listen to that...and a few others of his.

Anyone here listen to Last Emperor? I checked out a few tracks and I'm liking him so far.

ayo happy ROYCE DAY to everybody!!!

like the Pi Day which is March 14th, today is May 9th.

in other words, 5/9 like Royce da 5'9", jajajajaja~~
Louis Logic > Your favorite MC*

*Unless your favorite MC is Ghostface
I thought he was dope when I saw him live in 2002 coz b4 that I never knew who he was.

then I bought Sin-a-Matic, and hated it!!!

thankfully I bought Styles of Beyond - Megadef at the same time which was awesome!!!

but... I downloaded Misery Loves Comedy and loved dat album~!!! I hope he works with JJ Brown again on his next album, which I'll definitely purchase.

Agreed! Top 5 MC in my book. But personally, Supreme Clientele is my favorite.

Dooo yoooouu remeemmbeeeeeeerrr. Yeeesss I reemeemmbeeeeer. :D

Love that song. First heard it on the And1 Mixtapes (I think volume 3?). Unfortunately, I haven't peeped anything else. I think I might have his album somewhere on my HD though.

so I listened to Revolutionary vol. 2 today,

I cant say I like it too much...

he's hella preachy, which is not necessarily the worst part,

but he puts everything out so bluntly!!

a lot of the best emcees use wit and metaphors and stuff to sound dope, but IT just uses simile comparisons about everything.

I didnt hate it by no means, at the very least he's very easy to understand and is definitely getting his message across to the listener,

but I find it hard to think any1 who's a fan of classic era, 90-95, type hip-hop music would dig him too much.

anyway Bone Thugs is next on the que, about time I get to it!!

Anyone here listen to Last Emperor?

Big fan of him. Palace Of The Pretender is my fav album from him (Clear Day, Echoleader, Karma, Meditation, One Life, Single Mother and The Incredible Man are great fucking songs on that album)

Has anyone checked out Infinito 2017's new album?

So what is everyone's favorite DJs?

Mine (in no order):

DJ Babu
DJ Krush
DJ Baku
Wajeed
Joe Beats
Madlib
Oh No
Memo
DJ Vadim
Bambaataa
DJ Mighty Mi
DJ Premier
J-Rocc
QBert
Tony Vegas
Prime Cuts
DJ Spooky (this is all based on his Songs Of A Dead Dreamer album, the rest of his output has been shit)
Kev Brown
I was mainly asking for DJs but producers are okay
I only ask because Joe Beats, who I've talked to a bunch of times (and I say that just to back up my statement), isn't a DJ.

But from your list, I'll steal the following:
DJ Krush
Joe Beats
Madlib
DJ Premier

And I'll add the following, if we're including producers, too:
DJ Shadow
MF DOOM
Pete Rock
J Dilla

Shit, I can't think right now.

If you make intrumentals, your atleast a partial DJ. Shit, Memo is more of a producer than a DJ but I consider him first a DJ.

Another one I want to add is Kno

True.

And I'd add Kno, too...can't believe I forgot him.

Just remembered Kid Koala, Prince Paul and Dan the Automator(to an extent).

No love for the X-Ecutioners?

Beat Junkies~!!! and Primo, u cant forget Primo.

so these past 2 days I listened to Thug Stories then Strength n Loyalty.

Strength & Loyalty is actually pretty damn good!!!

but it's good in the same sense as Murda Muzik,

i.e. half the tracks are forgettable and skippable, but the rest is smashing.

Thug Stories on the other hand was terrible~!!! I guess it was a "practice" album for them since it's been a long time, and they lost Bizzy.

then last ntie I listened to Young Jeezy - The Inspiration, hilarious as always!!!

I needa figure out what to listen to now until Marco Polo drops tuesday

I'm listening to the 'Black Album' by Jay-Z right now. He should have retired with this one, even though 'Reasonable Doubt' is his only true classic.
No love for the X-Ecutioners?
Don't get me wrong, I think Rob Swift is pretty good but I would rather take Scratch Perverts, Dub Pistols or the Invisibl Skratch Piklz over them any day of the week (Beat Junkies would be the top dog but that collective is massive and even with their special shows during the late 90's, they have never even been in the same room together so it puts them out of the running).

I don't know if I'd say half the tracks (more like 2-3), but the song with mariah carey has never once been played all the way through in my car (and bow wow on the same track? what was going on there?).

lol I like that song tho.

anyway I listened to Sa-Ra on my way to work today.

pretty damn good!! But not really my "cup of tea (?)"

I can probably give it another listen thru by the time I get back home

but I think I'll like the Polyrhytm album much more as it seems to be more of a rap album

fock meng...

I jus lost 4 cdrs in failed burn attempts trying to burn that polyrhythm album...

I donno what the deal is... coz I was able to successfully burn another cd after that.

I'ma try polyrhythm again prolly later this week once my computer's rebooted, but til then it's currently transferring onto my cell phone / mp3 player (at a snail's pace too!!!)

anyway so I'm lookin thru what I can burn in place of polyrhythm for some new songs to listen to, and I find this:

51T7TVXYVML._AA240_.jpg

funny thing is, I was actually thinking about it on my way home today. lol deja vu.

Of course, having not heard this album yet is another shame on me :(

I gotta go to UCLA tomorow after workin so I cant get Marco Polo rite away... I'ma prolly buy it wednesday along with Dilated Peoples - 20/20 coz I been needing that album for a while as well, especially since Evidence's album was so good.

I'll most likely put these polyrhythm mp3s chillin in my cell phone to good use while I'm at ucla tho

bought this yesterday, gave it 2.5 spins during my daily travels, about to tell u guyz how it is!!

51UQRmjh69L._AA240_.jpg

First off the album is nice, no doubt about that. Dope beats and dope emcees, but suffers from one very major flaw.

By the time you've heard the 1st 2 songs, u pretty much got the gist of the album. Marco NEVER switches up his style and stays consistent with throw back New York street hip-hop.

While that's the kinda music I do indeed like, these songs would sound better on their respective artists' albums rather than having them all on the same album. The reason being, a single artist can bring a lot of variety to a record, but this album is the same thing over and over again with different artists.

So as I mentioned before, the first 2 tracks are dope, with Copywrite and OC. 3rd track is kardinal Offishall, another dope song, followed by the Masta Ace single.

so we're off to 4 good songs from the start, but having already achieved familiarity with the album in addition to having finished listening to the best track makes the rest of the album quite forgettable.

seriously! Even songs with Edo G, Buckshot, Large Professor, and Kool G Rap dont seem to stand out much, even though when u look at them as individual songs they sound spectacular. it really is a shame.

the one exception IMO is the song with Sadat X, JuJu (beatnuts), and AG. That's a killer combination and the song is dope!!! Unfortunately... it's a song about weed -_- yeay rite take 3 dope emcees and put them in a track together but let them talk about one of the most uninteresting things I wanna hear about. Still... good song.

overall 3.5 / 5

not a good "album", but great songs, as well as partying and DJ material.

On the bright side, I've listened to the first 13 tracks off Polyrhythm. I really dig it so far, I think I'ma actually go out and purchase the actual cd (which means I would've paid for it twice, lol). That record has potential to be one of my personal year's bests!!

o crap I'm double posting!! somebody get me!

anyway some food for thought. I gave this a few spins today (which I bought the same time as Marco Polo)

51FQBF66TPL._AA240_.jpg

shit is FIRE!! I think a lot of the reviews will disagree, but I really like Dilated's style yet havent bought any of their albums since Expansion Team (downloaded Neighborhood Watch for some odd reason).

Alchemist produces some nice azz beats that seriously just cant be effed with. But... I remember after hearing so many good things about his album I checked it out and didnt like it much at all.

61WRM1KEJXL._AA240_.jpg

similar to Marco Polo, the songs are all great but it sounds like you're listening to the same thing over and over again.

I guess I came down to the conslusion, I do not like compilation records with a single producer on the whole record. On the other hand, a single producer handling the beats for a whole album when the artist remains constant thruout the disc (Murs 3:16, Gangstarr, Cunnynlinguists, Madvillain etc) is just fine and usually comes out great. As much as I didnt really dig first Infantry, Prodigy & Alchemist came out to be one of my top records of the year so far.

Other two compilation records produced by a single guy/team that I could think of at the moment that I couldnt get into are:

61ZVZ0NJDHL._AA240_.jpg
51Z16QVQYHL._AA240_.jpg

I still need to hear the Jazzy Jeff album tho, as well as that old Jermain Dupri - Life in 1492 to see how well my stance on these kind of records will hold up.

BUT!!!! one person I can definitely enjoy over the boards with a wide smorgasboard of emcees is this guy:

516RYPT9P6L._AA240_.jpg
41KTVA2KZAL._AA240_.jpg

possibly Dr Dre as well. I havent heard Chronic 2001 but the original Chronic is eargasmic. I should make it my priority to listen to Chronic 2001 by the end of next week to prep myself for Detox.

The beats are all a little similar for that Marco Polo album but it is still hot. That War track is the shit. I would recommend this because of all the collaborations from so many different rappers. They are spitting fire. I have only listened to it twice but so far this is my opinion it might change after further spins.

Dammit Jekki, you beat me to it. Pete Rock's Instrumental CD's are bad ass, and there's nothin' better to me than chillin' to some instrumental hip hop.
Aside from the soul survivor cd's, you can also add

Petestrumentals
and

The Surviving Elements: From Soul Survivor II Sessions

I also loved his "best of" CD with CL Smooth.

well now that I've given more thought about my last post, I gotta take back some of it.

I really dug this: (I've heard the 1st one before but only once so I cant remember it all too well).

Not to mention, one of my favorite records of the year was a compilation album by the same team of producers thruout,

41Q5VA3TW2L._AA240_.jpg

I gotta go back and relisten to their older records.

On the other hand, this record also fell victim to all the things I previously said:

31y5fjznt6L._AA170_.jpg

it's all a mixed bag I guess... depends on how much variety the producer wants to throw in

http://therootslive.com

I just saw this site mentioned on OKP, and anyone who's seen The Roots live will love it.

So what Hip Hop artists have you guys seen live before?
My list is rather short, but it has some great names on it:

The Roots
Lupe Fiasco
Public Enemy
X-Clan

So what Hip Hop artists have you guys seen live before?

Del (4 times)
The Roots (3 times that I can remember)
Blackalicous
Common (don't even remember how many times but its been a lot)
Jurassic 5 (2 times)
Aesop Rock
Sol.illquists Of Sound
All Natural
Molemen
Murs
Redman & Method Man
Mos Def

there is more but thats off the top of my head

If you want to hear an odd song check out Fatlip's song on the new Chemical Brothers album. Its classic Fatlip humor but the beat is gonna have to grow on me, its really playfull but it feels a bit off.

seen so many!

Jeru, Mos, Kweli, Common, Pharoahe, Hiero (all of them), Boot Camp (sans OGC), Living Legends (all of them), Dilated, Defari, Krondon, Phil Da Agony, Redman, WuTang, De La, Aceyalone, Ab Rude, Mikah 9, Emanon, Visionaries, Aes Rock, J5, OC, Swollen Members, MF Doom, King Tee, Apathy, Celph, Louis Logic, Brother Ali, DJ Quik, Chingy (for some odd reason), Fatlip, Knocturnal, Boo Ya Tribe, Wyclef, Styles of Beyond, Ugly Ducking, Lexicon, Planet Asia,

and a bunch of other foolz I cant remember... but tomorrow I'll at least be adding Cunnynlinguists to the list.

still hella doos I aint seen yet tho that I wanna: Bone Thugs, Mobb Deep, Lox/DBlock, etc.

back to talking albums, when did this come out?!?!

51hNFMD6MQL._AA240_.jpg

says April 24 on amazon but Best Buy and CC didnt have it this morning, I'ma definitely buy this after my next paycheck!!

Lox always comes nice, except for Sheek Louch's rather average album

Jekki, you haven't heard the Chronic 2001 yet? Where the hell were you in 1999 when everyone was blasting that shit? ;)

A great album though.... there's some filler on it, but the production is top-notch.

Right now I'm listening to 'Doggystyle' by Snoop Dogg.

lol Rozz, during that time I was listening to everybody else while they were listening to it.

I never bought many popular albums back in the days, i.e. Snoop, Dre, Bone, Nas, Biggie, Busta, Outkast, etc becoz a lot of ppl I knew had their records so I could jus listen to it from them.

that's why if u see my cd collection, it would be one of the more rather unique collections out there. As a kid I only had so much money and had to spend it wisely.

the only more popular artists I would buy back then were Tribe, De La, and Wu Tang coz nobody I knew was into them,

Anyway I'm feelin hella dumb rite now (and kinda sad too). cunnynlinguists is tonite and I remembered to bring me a spare t shirt and shoes to change after work.

too bad it's hella cold for no reason rite now, and I didnt bring a coat with me -_-

prolly wont be going anymore...

to add to the misfortune, my dvd-r drive doesnt seem to want to burn music cds anymore. I think I gotta invest in a portable mp3 player soon that isnt my cell phone

i wanna get that Sa-ra i keep seeing it but i need to just pick it up.
i was listening to sirius radio (hip hop nation ch. 40) last night and this had this dude called afromentals(sp) he was playing some really good stuff. I dont know if it just comes on sundays or what but it was pretty nice.
