How do people get "good" at FPS games?

some people just dont have this one crucial part of becoming or being at the top echelon of combat. This is what we call the "killer instinct" or just combat instincts. Some thing just can never be taught- when a shooter takes a couple shots at you and your forced to duck behind a corner, you have to make a move or you probably WILL die. You have to make this split-second decision of what action you will take with the upmost confidence. wether it be to come back around the corner after you give him a second to try and run around/through a room or hallway to counter your move that he believes would be to run around through the same way to flank him, and then run in the original direction of the shooter down the same hallway where he was shooting at you and catch him turned around running and pop him. however, it is crucial to be prepared for him to be in any position at all times. you MUST be able to decide what you think this opponet will be doing based on the dimeanor of the shooter in the first place. is he playing balls to the wall? slow and catious? Tactics can be learned. knowing exactly when to use what actions at what times without having to think about it sometimes cannot.

-do not become predictable. switch up your style of play constantly.
-do not telegraph your attacks. popping out from behind a wall every 2.3 seconds or any fixed number of time(conciously or not) WILL get you killed.
-ALWAYS, and ALWAYS be prepared to shoot at any unexpected target. Keep your aim in the dircetion where you will be able to react, move your crosshairs and shoot with the most effective use of your weapon.
-KNOW YOUR WEAPONS!!!! a less accurate automatic weapon should be aimed at the upper torso(especially while moving) and so on and so on and so on. your weapon is your lifeline, know how to use it.
-know your opponets weapon!! this is equally important. if your advesary has an assault rifle, and your packin a SMG stick to cover and try to stealth your way as close as possible, as fast as possible.
-BAITING, this is a very useful tactic mostly utilized in team combat. good teamwork in combat situations WILL up your chances of survival. GREAT teamwork in combat will boost your sucess ratio dramatically. in order to be great(against worthy opponents) you will need to know procedures such as; flank moves, covering, clearing(rooms, houses), supression fire, formations such as the vee, wedge, echelon- which all are useful in different ways depending on your surroundings.
-ALWAYS KNOW WHERE YOUR TEAMMATES ARE POSITIONED!! if you lose contact with a teammate, and you know that your other teammates were covering these areas, then by process of elimination you should get a rough idea of where the shooter/shooters are positioned.
-COMMUNICATION!!!! if you dont communicate with your teammates your all going to die.

study these fundamentals of combat.
learn and practice.
take notes when playing with good players.
surround yourself with talent and you will find yourself learning more than you know- eventually becoming an elite player

^yikes it is old. lol

Anyway, I can't say I'm good at FPS in general but when it comes to Rainbow Six I'm the one usually at the top. Even my friend that's more a gamer than I am will agree. He naturally has better eye and hand coordination than me, but since the controls/controller is so natural in RSV I do really well. In terms of practice... well, knowing the maps and having good tactics while playing a game like RSV is essential. Others dunno.

Well, first off, I'm not very good at FPS's (I can hold my own online against other bad players, but that's about it).

But, I think FPS's are no different than anything else. Many people have been playing these for many hours a week for a lot of years. So, part of it is just logging in the time. You have to know where everything is (where is that gernade pickup, where is the gun). You also should be good at every gun. Even if you aren't a 'sniper', you should be able to snipe, and very well, if your going to be good. Same with all other aspects of the game.

Also, it helps to watch other good players. If you can, try to get on the friends list of some good players, and sit back a few times and watch them (or see if there are good player videos on youtube). Where do they go when they start the level, what guns are they picking up.

I know playing baseball as a kid, coaches always harped on 'perfect practice makes perfect play'. Playing helps, but you also have to learn the 'right' ways to play, if you really want to be good.

That, or when your buddies come over, give them some low batteries for their controllers so they conveniently die when your playing against them, and tell them to shutup if htey complain.

Haha what an old ass thread. I like how some people wrote legit ass answers with bullet points and paragraphs.
Also, CS is the worst way to learn to play a modern FPS. Modern FPS don't care if you crouch or not (and if they do, no one does anyway since you lose valuable time). Also, CS is the most inconsistent FPS ever. Additionally, the time spent in CS doesn't really help you develop your coordination since you just are probably running to the enemy, dieing, and then watching others play, since it has no respawns.
Also just want to take the time to say this kid doesn't know shit. I was good at FPS before Counter Strike, but playing CS made me much better (and more serious), especially fucking CAL matches. If you go to some random pub, sure, kids are going to run at you like crazy people, but then you just blow their head clear off and show them how truly scrub they are.

FPS are about timing, and also learning the specific mechanics of the game. Learning the spray patterns in CS was key, because if you want to spray with the AK effectively (and yes, it can be done), you have to know to look towards the opponent's thighs or knees or else the bullets will fly over the head.

Same thing goes for Halo. I haven't played in a long time, but I remember the SMG had a slight arc, so you'd want the top part of the circle reticule to be aimed at the head, rather than the center of the circle.
